After four days we were able to leave the hut – the torrential rain had finally stopped at last and the sun was shining off and on as the clouds receded. We hoisted our packs on our backs and started down the track along the side of the mountain towards the gorge. Finally it came into view, but our hearts sank. Four days of rain …. the level of the river in the gorge had risen dramatically, and was far higher than we had feared as we waited out the four days. We had to get across the raging torrent to the bank on the other side – there was no other way out. The cold blue waters hurtled past, taunting us to try ….. Bark on a dying apple tree.
