  • Old Caterpiller, rusting away in a field out in the middle of nowhere

  • Here’s a shot from the ghost town of Warren, Idaho. This town was once flooded with prospectors in the late 1800’s now only a few peopele remain as permanent residents. No power has been routed to the town and a phone line was installed only a few years ago. Snowmobile or snowcat are the only modes of transportation during the winter. 40 miles of the route in remains unplowed during these months. I feel extremely fourtunate to have a family cabin up here. A great place to visit and leave all the BS behind. A place of good people, great scenery, and a hell of a lot of fun. The town was almost taken off the map this summer by the East Zone Complex fire. It came within a quarter mile of the town. Now Warren is an oasis within the blackness. Possibly an addition to its unique character. It has survived many wildfires and I am sure will survive many more. / If anyone has seen the movie or read the book “1000 pieces of gold”, it is based on events in this town and much of its history. Please enjoy!

  • THE SUBJECT: / Rusting old tools from a bygone age hanging on a blacksmith’s wall bathed in a golden afternoon light. / Not only are these tools not used any more but there are fewer and fewer people who know what they were used for. THE LOCATION: / This Still Life was photographed at Timbertown, an historic theme park at Wauchope, west of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a lightly overcast summer day. THE MAKING of ‘On the Smithy’s Wall #1’: / The shot was made using natural light and a longish exposure from inside the Blacksmith’s shop with low diffused light washing in from the open double door. Another example of how I photograph the light and not just the subject so I can create a mood shot not a snapshot. / On the suggestion of a fellow camera club member I made a vertical crop of the items hanging on the wall on our left. You can take a look here if you wish. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/ 8 @ 1.5sec, ISO80, Tripod, Timer. / S7RAW & Photoshop CS. • “All this too shall pass” is a line from one of my favourite Sufi parable/stories. Original photo is of a winch that was used to pull small fishing boats along the sliprails (forground) from the water. A row of boatsheds (now abandoned) were built to house the boats, on this rocky island. All are rusted and of no longer use. ~ Photo taken @ Second valley, Sth Australia (Since this photo was taken, all these sheds, and steel-works have been removed for the public safety.
