  • The West MacDonnell National Park / Simpsons Gap, one of the most prominent waterholes in the West MacDonnell Ranges. / The area is an important spiritual site to the Arrernte Aboriginal people

  • I recently had the priviledge of travelling through central Australia. I scouted out this composition the day before taking this shot. With my planned return the following day and the show exceeded all expectations in a display of desert light and beauty.Glowing in the twilight, a lone ghost gum stands starkly and majestically. The scene backdropped by the jaw dropping West Macdonnell ranges. • This has to be one of my best images. Ormiston Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia

  • A new perspective from a well visited location. I have been to this lookout dozens of times and seen sunset, sunrises and the midday sun but after getting a little inspiration from a book that I’m reading I took a few steps back and looked more carefully at the foregrounds on offer. The sun was half set behind a ridge of mountains and I saw a soft fading light covering the green spinifex and I was off. Mt. Sonder, West MacDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia site: www.thedirtygardener.org .

  • One of the most difficult palces to make photographs in the West MacDonnell Ranges. It is an exceptionally narrow gorge of less than 1m at times it covers a distance of about 1km through the range and is filled with water so swiming is a must. With very few palces to stand or sit all the way through it is always difficult to access. The walls of the gorge are about 15-25m high and in most places it is impossable to touch the bottom as well as this there is several slipery waterfalls to climb up. I was equipt with a large Pelican Case filled with photo gear double wrapped in clip seal bags just in case, food, water all of which was tied to my belt as well as my manfroto tripod strapped to my back which made swimming very difficult to say the least. I often found myself clinging to a grip on the wall thinking WTF am I doing here next time I’m taking a life jacket which might be had to find here in the desert. I wasn’t overy pleased with the resulting images but I’ll upload to share them around. Redbank Gorge, West macDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia site: www.thedirtygardener.org .

  • Another of the images from my swim through Redbank Gorge here in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Here it is easy to see the ruggard nature of the gorge with bolders wedged between the walls and deep water to swim through. My partner and her friend went all the way to the end of the gorge while I was content with this location to shoot. With all my gear so wrapped up and protected it was a major production to stop and shoot. A friend took some photos of me and the setup before I started swimming through the gorge. Its a location that is seriously hard to photograph but it has such a potential for amazing images. I think I’ll go back next week and try again. Redbank Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia site: www.thedirtygardener.org .

  • The Finke river one of the worlds oldest river systems flowed once again this summer. A cloudy sky and the perfect amount of light to record both the shadows and highlights in the range made this a great day for photography. Glen Helen is a spot that I rarely get to shoot because of a limited amount of time and a desire to take part in a tonic lime and bitters at the bar. Glen Helen Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges National Park / Northern Territory / Australia site www.thedirtygardener.org

  • A magical morning walk through the Ormiston Pound provided such amazing photographic opportunities from a location I have many quality images from already. The Ormiston Pound is quickly becoming a very good friend of mine and I find myself being happy just to be in its presence. As a person who visits stunning locations like this once a week it can be challenging to see it as if I were looking at it for the first time. The Ormiston Pound has never presented me with this problem as it can be such a dynamic location. • Coastal panorama looking off from the cliffs at port MacDonnell, Limestone Coast, South Australia. Wonderful Limestone cliffs in this area looking over brilliant aqua colours. Four shot stitch in Photoshop CS3. Canon 400D 18-55 with polarising filter.

  • A well weathered Rock Acacia sit on top the ridge line of the South wall of Ormiston Pound. I had been watching this tree for almost a year now and dreaming of having the right light too shoot it. This morning was perfect with heavy clouds to really block out the sun which would have been right behind the branches. Plus the amazingly clear conditions enabled the viewer to see a stunning amount of detail in the usually dusty mountains of the north wall. • Once full rock pools are slowly drying up in the intense heat of summer. Before they do dry up these pools are teaming with both animal and plant life. Some of the more note worthy are fish up to 20cm long many species of frogs and blooming algae. • Yesterday I took an early morning drive to Ormiston Gorge my favourite spot in the West MacDonnell Ranges just to shoot this waterhole in the morning light. The water is rapidly evaporating and I though that I should go and get them while they were there to be had. I had shot many images from this spot but much later in the morning while finishing off the Pound walk. This is the first shoot armed with my new knowledge about diffraction and how it relates to my sensor. Instead of shooting at f/22 I opened up the aperture a little to f/16 in an effort the reduce this diffraction effect. • This is a reworking of an earlier image that I posted here on RB I really love the original colour version as all through the image it has beautifl soft hues where usually the desert is very harsh. This morning was truly the most magical morning I had been ontop of the pound with dense heavy clouds sweeping over the landscape and the thick moist heavy air filling my lungs. I had been watchnig this tree for more than a year and I had never managed to soot a single image of it. This was mostly because of my previous camera a Canon 400d with its crop sensor didn’t offer enough field of view even with a 17mm lens on the front. With both mt new Canon 5D MKII with its full frame sensor and the perfect weather conditions I was able to fit all the detail I wanted in both the range and the tree into a single frame. I hope that you like it! • Simpson’s Gap is located 23 km from Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell National Park. Rare Black-footed Rock-wallabies are found here and are often seen if you look hard enough at the rocks walls and tall grasses. The Simpsons Gap area incorporates large areas of Mulga and is a major stronghold for over 40 rare plants. It forms part of the MacDonnell Ranges and is located on the Larapinta Trail. Orton effect applied The area is an important spiritual site to the Arrernte Aboriginal people, where several dreaming trails and stories cross.

  • A deadset freezing morning with temperatures around the -2C mark made this pre-dawn scree slope scramble and shoot a little bit cold for my liking… But with a vista such as this one that I had sourced out the previous day how could I say no to the opportunity before me ? view this image large bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio Fuji G617, Velvia 50. / ©T.Middleton2009 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——
