Young Macaques taken care of each other in the hot springs near Shiga Kogen, Japan. These guys come down everyday from the mountains where they live to soak it up. Thanks to Lucindawind for her nomination for this image into the Pay it Forward group. / I quote; This is just one of the most wonderful animal shots on here but I LOVE this … its an incredible shot …one that should be in National Geographic ..its heartwarming and shows devotion and caring from another species other than ourselves..
A young Macaque sits and reflects on how good life is in these parts for a monkey. Soaking up the hot springs in the Shiga Kogen N.P. and just rolling around in the snow with his mates…yep, life is good…!!
Hi all, Have not long got back in from Holland, where we visited Apenheul primate centre. I have some amazing shots of the baby gorilla that I went over there to see on this visit, but while I was there, a baby Barbary Macaque was born. When I saw it, it was still moist after being cleaned up by Mum, and Dad was busy grooming Mum after all her effort. They were perched up on rocks above me, and I had no tripod, so had to go for the shot holding the camera by hand. As I was snapping away – Mum did this, and I was just completely blown away. The shot is edited, to sharpen it and improve the exposure, but the expression is 100% genuine and very real. I couldn’t beleive my luck :) Thanks for looking – I thought this one, although not the best shot technically – was well worth sharing, purely for the very special moment that it was.
Just another relaxing Winters day at Monkey Day Spa… / Honshu ~ Japan..
Little wonder these guys have silky shiny furr!...
Macaque at Jigokudani, Japan.
Nothing like a hot bath on a cold Winters day..
Can one get any more relaxed than this? ~ Japanese Macaque ~ Jigokudani ~ Honshu ~ Japan.. yet another upload to my Monkey Day Spa collection….
They say, never look a monkey in the eye..! well a bit hard when one is staring at you intensely like this..This snow macaque chick had just jumped out of a natural thermal bath in Japan, probably about -5 degrees outside but the warm rocks dry them off nicely.
Japanese Macaque in contemplation…Taken at Jigokudani Hot Springs ~ Honshu ~ Japan.
Another upload to my Monkey Day Spa collection as per below..
Taken whilst on canoe in Ao Nang Thailand. About three hours into the tour this group of lively (and hungry) Macaques managed to find us as we were enjoying some refreshments. This particular charming young one sat on my foot. Wild as they are and not nearly afraid of us enough..they tend to be a bit intimidating. I didnt move my foot or much else..just hoped he would continue on his merry way.. / They have big teeth you know :) / He is wet from swimming to the canoe and trying to raid the esky that was nesting comfortably between myself and my canoeing partner at the time. I think he got some pineapple in the end..not my foot..lol.. :D / This isnt the greatest of photos..its more to tell you of the experience you can have with the wildlife~! The interaction..even though intimidating can bring you up close and personal. This is one of those moments :D
A young macaque, perhaps thinking of when Winter will be over, all the climbing and rolling around he can have with his mates in the lush leafy forest of the Shiga Kogen N.P…Honshu ~ Japan. Sister shot to the one below…thanks for having a look and comments always welcome..
A lovely little group pf Lion Tailed Macaques – have a Cwtch [Meach]
With all the grooming these guys get, surely they have a very minimal amount of flea’s..!! Young macaques at Jogokudani ~ Japan… / I wonder if by chance, the possibilty of these 2 teenagers being the same as from my Monkey Day Spa shots from several years ago…as per below.. / you never know..!! thanks for having a look..
This is a photo of a macaque which I took at a temple near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I love these cheeky monkeys. And he is cheeky in more ways than one, as you can see! I asked Julie Langford to add a black background and she has come up trumps yet again. So thanks Jul for enhancing my work!

Weather deteriorating and night closing in. Time to leave.
Makaku, Macaque, Macaca, Macaquo are words which refer to the English word Monkey. In 1960 the term settled in Portuguese as macaco, and by 1680 it appeared in French as macaque. Let us imagine a person by the name of Mr. Makaku. In Japanese, one can address Mr. Makaku in many ways. In Japanese Keigo, if one does not really know Mr. Makaku, one would offend Mr. Makaku by simply calling him Makaku. In Japan, to call a stranger by name without an honorific implies that you believe the stranger to be inferior in status to you, and is highly insulting. One could use the expression Makaku-shi, which is used to express respect for a professional qualification. This is a Sonkeigo expression. Hence the name, Makakushi. Makakushi was made In memory of the famous fighting monkey, Jacko Maccacco, of Westminister Pit 1800.
