Erosion from overgrazing and rabbits has exposed the wonderful colours of 25,000 years of sand accumulation on the lunette surrounding Lake Mungo in semi-outback Australia.
As the sun sets in outback Australia / the Mungo Lunette is kissed by the / remaining rays of sunlight.
The eastern lunette of Lake Mungo, in far south-western NSW provides us with a ‘feel’ (as best as we could imagine I guess) of what this inland lake system was 20-30,000 years ago. The dune is slowing moving as the westerly winds move the sands east. Well worth the trip if you are out Balranald/Mildura way. This area is all part of the Mungo National Park and Willandra World Heritage Area. For better viewing, click on view larger.
This shot shows part of the lunette of Lake Mungo, It is not far from this site where the aboriginal skeletal remains of Australia’s oldest cremation were found, dating back some 40,000 years. Shot taken with an Olympus E520 DSLR camera / /

The finely erroded lunettes of the Walls of China, Mungo N.P.~ Outback N.S.W ~ Australia. It’s an awe inspiring ancient landscape to wander around.
An eroded dune at Mungo National Park in western New South Wales. The eroded dunes in this area are referred to as lunettes. It was here among the dunes that archeoligists unearthed human remains, which were subsequently carbon dated more than 30,000 years. This find and others went to prove that aborigines occupied the land that long ago.
This scene was photographed in Mungo National Park in the west of New South Wales. It was here where archeologists unearthed human remains that were susequently carbon dated more than 30,000 years. This along with other finds went to prove that aborigines occupied the land all that long ago. The eroded dunes or lunettes in the distance are a feature of the landscape. and are a great subject for the artist or photographer especially at sundown or sunrise. Mungo was a working sheep station before being taken over by the National Park and the historic shearing shed is also well worth photographing. There is a good camping ground here and for the discerning traveller a nearby lodge is also available. The National Park also has an interpretive centre where you can gain much information on the history of the area.
