Background Information: / Tofino is a village of about 1,650 residents on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada, located at the western terminus of Highway 4. It is located at the tip of the Esowista Peninsula, and is thus a part of Clayoquot Sound. Islands in the vicinity include Meares, Vargas and Flores. Lone Cone on Meares Island is an extinct volcano. Tofino and the nearby town of Ucluelet are the closest towns to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The settlement of Tofino first acquired the name in 1909 with the opening of the Tofino Post Office, named in association with Tofino Inlet nearby. Tofino Inlet was named in 1792 by the Spanish commanders Galiano and Valdés, in honor of Admiral Vicente Tofiño, under whom Galiano had learned cartography. A popular tourist destination in the summer, Tofino’s population swells to many times its winter size. It attracts surfers, nature lovers, campers, whale watchers, fishermen, or anyone just looking to be close to nature. In the winter it is not as bustling, however, many people visit Tofino and the west coast to watch storms on the water. Close to Tofino is Long Beach, a scenic and popular year-round destination, at the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Nearby Maquinna Marine Provincial Park, with its natural hot springs, is located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Tofino and is also a popular day-trip destination for tourists although it is only reachable by boat or float plane. The traditional classic chinese word “ai” (love) consist of the word “xing” (heart) at its core. “Ai Xing” in mandarin means “loving heart”. I have simply highlighted the core word “xing” in red to show the meaning of loving heart. “While some simplified characters were adopted from conventional abbreviated forms that have existed for a long time, the vast majority of the changes made by PRC were “unnatural” such as the removal of the symbol for heart (心) from the word love (愛) into the new character (爱).” (Wikipedia) This word is hand-written by me (using a wacom pen & tablet). This t-shirt design is currently only available from RB. / / A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways. The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

A story from Cambodia: I met the girl in the red pyjamas on a hot day in one of Angkor’s busy temples. Although we ended up spending a nice amount of time getting to know each other, this photo was taken before she’d seen me sitting across the hallway. Her mother was busy selling incense to the tourists in a hurry to get through and see the sights- and the girl in red pyjamas sat still and well behaved. What happened next is here
