Let me tell you about Samuel. I met Samuel at Mamman Jeanne’s orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. Mamman Jeanne’s orphange is sponsored by CNEC Partners International and supported by Heal Africa. Samuel danced for us on arrival. He was awesome. I then had the privilege of interviewing him. In short, here’s his story: When Samuel was 2 and still being breast fed, his mother was set upon randomly by the militia. They do that, for fun. She was attacked with machetes and kiiled where she stood. Samuel was cut by the blow. You can see the scar on the left hand side of his face. He also has some scars on his scalp. Oh and he lost his left hand. Thinking they were all dead and their days work done, the militia left. Samuel was discovered, barely but still alive. He was taken from his mother’s corpse and somehow delivered to Mamman Jeanne. A remarkable woman who nursed him herself (as she was already breast feeding her own child). Samuel is now 16 and still at Mamman Jeanne’s orphanage. Which resides in a war torn country not ‘important’ enough to save. People like Samuel are everywhere in Congo. Everywhere. People like Mamman Jeanne? Not quite so many. Samuel likes playing soccer and dancing. Prior to us arriving a chid had been stolen from the orphanage by the militia to be a child soldier. How long do you reckon Samuel has? When people ask you to donate to these causes, they’re asking you because it’s the only way they will survive. It’s as simple and as gruesome as that. Not unlike the crime in the first place.

We had just been talking with some of the patients at the hospital in Goma, DR Congo. Every now and then my friend Rebecca Zachariah would dissapear. She’s a Doctor so I figured she was off to see a patient. Well she was but not just for medical reasons. Bec had bought a whole lot of stuffed toys from home. Squeezed them into her pack somehow. Then during the trip, she would nick off quietly every now and then and present a little child with a furry friend. No fanfare. She didn’t even tell me until half way through the trip. These kids hardly have any clothes and certainly have little food. In the case of this gorgeous little girl the only thing we were sure she had was polio. Well at the very least after we left she had a furry bear as well. And do you think she was going to let go of it? Not in a hurry :) This photo is the November shot in the HEAL Africa calendar. – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Black & white photography – Dog photography – Africa photography / - Beach photography - Monotone photography

The time is upon us, yet again, as we look within ourselves to find the new source of Light and regeneration. The Light returns as the Sun shifts and starts moving northward again…Winter! / In the circle of life, Winter represents the North direction, the place of our elders, the ancestors and knowledge. It is the time to honor our growth, by celebrating it and sharing it with others. It is the time when Nature throws you into yourself, so that you have to explore territory that might otherwise be unfamiliar. During this time, we acknowledge the Mother Earth’s renewal, when she’s lying dormant, seemingly asleep and the seeds of one season lie in the Earth energy that will allow them to burst forth into new life, when the warmth of the Sun returns from the South to warm her. / We gather our family and friends together to share and experience the knowledge of “All the Ages”, combining our strengths, talents and abilities to achieve Peace, Balance and Harmony… Seasons of the Heart Wishing each and everyone a Blessed Season of Joy, brotherhood/sisterhood and PEACE!!! Many years ago, sometime in the early 1990’s, my husband and I were travelling through Hopi land, outside of Truth or Consequences, Arizona and happened upon a Tribal officer while camping, and we shared a pot of coffee with him. In our conversation, he noticed a basket of sacred white sage, that I usually wrapped while we drove through the countryside, prompting him to telling us about Oraibi, the oldest (still standing) native site in the U.S. He continued by telling us of a gathering there on the following day, and that he’d like to invite us to attend and we wholeheartedly agreed. / We started our morning having a traditional Hopi breakfast of Frybread, black beans and eggs, then we drove up to the Mesas, ignoring the signs that read “No White Man beyond this point”, we drove up a winding road, while I wrapped and was burning sage. When we reached the dwellings, many people were coming out of their homes and surrounding our hippie van (‘78 Dodge). It turns out they had not had white sage (grandmother sage) growing on their land for a couple of years, so when they smelled it coming from our vehicle they had to investigate. Thank Creator that it grew like weeds on our property in California, and we had plenty with us. We gifted several people with wrapped bundles, while others wished to trade for torquoise, blue corn and dye-making instruction. It was a wonderful morning, and we felt good that they mentioned it was a significant gift for the upcoming gathering, which they also invited us to attend. / After eating lunch with a beautiful Hopi family, we drove down the Mesa, following our new friends to Oraibi. When we arrived, there were maybe a dozen people standing around, we got out of the van and an elder man in jeans, a flannel shirt and a bandana around his head, approached us, as I held out a small basket of bundled sage, he just smiled. He took the basket in his roughly worn hands and motioned for us to follow him. We sat down in a circle with what grew to about 30 people, at this time and another man began speaking about the Earth and introduced the elderly man as the authorized spokesperson to speak on behalf of the Elders of the Hopi Nation – Thomas Banyacaya. / I was actually aware of who this elder was, and shocked that I was standing beside him as he was to address a chosen group of tribal and non-tribal (us) members, which was now about 75 people. This humble man would share a message of clear intent and great importance… We are the One’s we have been waiting for… / We have been telling the people that this is the eleventh hour. Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the hour. And there are things to be considered: / Where are you living? / What are you doing? / What are your relationships? / Are you in right relationship? / Know your garden. It is time to speak your truth. Create your community. Be good to each other. And do not look outside yourself for a leader. This could be a good time. / There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold onto the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly. / Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore and push off into the river. Keep your eyes open and your head above water. See who is in there with you and celebrate. / At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally. Least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey come to a halt. / The time of the Lone Wolf is over. Gather yourselves! / Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary. / All that you do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. / We are the one’s we have been waiting for.” This artwork is a symbol of the rain deity that I remembered from a rock drawing we saw while at Hopi land, near Betatakin. Drawn, photographed, then painted in photoshop7 (it is also the T-shirt design called Earth Tribe with a slight alteration) All, all and everything is of importance and nothing that is good happens fast. Thanks to my serendipitous sister, owlspook, a link providing the same message ;) New Hopi Prayer

In March of this year, my husband Lynn and I had the great pleasure of meeting, sharing and being blessed by Lindsay Wagner (deeksha blessing), by participating in an experiential workshop, she calls “Quiet the Mind, Open the Heart”. In addition, I was further blessed by being invited to her home for a private session for several hours, where she re-awakened my knowledge of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and also known by several other names. She also reminded me how our past experiences, with our inner file cabinets, color our perceptions of the world and our reactions to it. Like a particular incident that causes pain that we refuse to allow to heal, and even though we are very intelligent, our familial and/or societal upbringing, beliefs and responses can program us to react in ways that rob our joy in daily life. She helped me to explore my prior programming and shift my perspective beyond it, “to experience life as it is in the moment.” / One of the most profound gifts she gave me were the words upon this image, a new daily practice of mine ~ while touching just above the heart in a circular motion, I say each of these phrases three times, especially when experiencing any stress, but most often a daily mantra. It has had such a healing effect on regaining some power within my life, I thought I would share it here. / Image is a sketch of scales balanced, photographed and edited in photoshop7 with fractilius filter and text. / My hope and intention is that those that will benefit from this simple tool, will utilize and share it to heal themselves and others. / / Feelings
