Year in year out we struggle to find the right words to ask for the hand of one we love, lets start to put it right and make it easier.
One night there was a knocking on a wise woman’s door. / She let winter through to see a man fall onto her floor.
This I wrote to be read at my wedding.
Rhythmic breathing / Penetrates / Stark silence of night / Between whistling / Nasal gasps for air / I hear the steady dulcet / Beat of your h…
I could say, that I love you to the stars and back, / but would that be enough? I could say, that I love you to the moon and back, / but…
Is it enough to say ‘I love you’?
To have a special someone, / Beside you through the years. / To watch your children grow, / And to share your hopes and fears.
A Wedding day blessing. :)
Two lovebirds sat looking at the sunrise / With their wonderful flashing eyes / Visions of them brought to my mind / Something we have lost …
We’re a clique just me and you. / Our cabal, it’s made for two. / Oh Camarilla. / ...Oh, Camarilla.
I wrote this poem for a friend at Uni who was studying Engineering. Hi Shane, if you’re reading! He was trying to impress an English Lit major he had been dating for a few weeks and enlisted my help to tell her how he felt. I was studying accounting by the way. Yeah, go figure. The challenge was this: / She (Fiona) had an assignment to write a poem combining “cabal” and “couple”. / The poem had to be exactly 40 lines. / No words could be longer than 5 letters except a name. I chose Camarilla (which is a cabal). / Two line rhymes only or no rhymes at all. / Presented orally to music. So, Shane wanted to tell her how he felt, show her he knew something about Lit and impress her by completing the assignment before she did. Big ask for a guy whose best writing (he will freely admit this) was done inside the symbols on flowcharts! But how could I refuse – an opportunity to play Cyrano de Bergerac! I found it recently, on paper gone crisp and yellow with age, but here I have modified it with 11 words over the 5 letter limit. I also added a line. I don’t care, it sounds better. It’s harder to write a long poem using small words than you might think but the result actually makes it “sing-song” better. Do you think? 4×7 letter words / 7×6 letter words / 26×5 letter words / 39×4 letter words / 38×3 letter words / 35×2 letter words / 13×1 letter words Anyone care to guess what happened to Shane and Fiona.
The smoky glass table was cool and serene / The heated activity not to be seen

Lies too It used to be her sighs were / Hollow and full of cries
Just a feeling from all the wonderful work with brides.. /
It was then that I saw clearly I was no longer the central man in her life, but just her loving father

This is a special poem I wrote for one of my best friends, for her wedding. It borrows heavily from traditional, Romantic era poetry and even includes a few verses that are based on an old Irish blessing. The finished product of this consisted of my printing it out; burning the edges of the paper with a lighter, thus giving it an “old” feeling; and framing it. The title means “fortress of affection” in Irish Gaelic. At least, that is what I hope it means; otherwise, I’ve been a total dolt.
