This kitten and the calf are such good friends. They are always together. It was amazing to see.

I think this is a juvenile female cardinal, judging from the color of the bill and from her childlike curiosity, hanging around the feeder longer than usual and looking around with intense interest and not a whole lot of nervousness as is evident in more mature birds. A beautiful trusting little girl!

Mixed medium collage on various papers. Photograph of bird’s nest printed on Japanese rice paper with gouache staining and chinese calligraphy. Red square collage with bird head. Japanese block printed tree paper. Two leaves collaged onto Kinwashi paper. A fortune reads ” A pleasant surprise is in store for you”. The characters mean: love, trust, dream, and fortune.

I spotted this couple having their photoshoot when I was about at least a clear 70m away. Snapped it and converted it with some blur to the background while keeping the couple sharp. Love how their height is set against the relatively gigantic pillars

Jill and I had a MAJOR breakthru last week! I went to see her in the shelter of Cone Grove but she wasn’t there. I walked out a bit to where she’s usually hiding if not in the grove and she was munching dried weeds in the middle of Weedy Field. I called to her and once she knew it was me, she resumed eating without fear, letting her ears rise to hear for threats from elsewhere. I watched her for a while and took a pile of pictures (not really photographs as I was aiming to see what she was eating with no effort to capture anything else well. I saw that she wasn’t going to be leaving any time soon so I went back into Cone Grove and restocked the sunflower seeds I saw her munching once before before returning to the new hummingbird feeder to refill it. But I heard a crunch behind me and it was Jill who had followed me into the Grove! I was blown away and she was freaked: so scared her eyes were open painfully wide, her ears were aimed at me for the slightest sign she needed to leave, and she was faced towards the easiest way out of the Grove. But she was THERE and she had obviously followed me in! I was so happy I did my usual ‘freeze completely and talk to her softly’ thing. I about a minute, she relaxed (as usual) and went to the sunflower seeds, looking up at me. I had to laugh but gave her the usual encouraging sounds and she began eating – like a HOG! Good grief, I thought she’d dropped her bunnies already. LOL! I’m almost positive she did but maybe she’s hungry from the feeding of her ‘hare batch’. I sat down without her even stopping to get ready to run (as she usually does), got the Nikon D80 out, and got it focused on her as she ate. I turned off the auto focus to make less noise and disturb her less but she got so used to the sound of the shutter that I turned the auto focus back on and enjoyed the company. Less than 6 feet away from me, a wild jack rabbit was eating from the food I’d originally put out for Towhees and completely calm! Woo hoo! When she’s finished, I talked to her and she looked at me with the most relaxed and interested eyes I’ve seen on anything other that lizards and squirrels – way more intent and intelligent that blue jays, the turkey, and Towhees. This is a shot of Jill listening to me talk to her. I hope to get closer still with some carrots and her continuing to follow me soon. But WOW!!!

the creek and water is a great place for leveling and expression. the day was erotic in nature. it called for more than just a model and a photographer. the brutality of the gas mask and the clarity of the spirits in this area gave us a feeling that life was worth more than just what it had become.

The love affair began on March 15th, 1975. I was in a pet store buying supplies for a trip I planned to take with two of my dogs. I was looking for a new bed for my dachshund, Ethel who was named after Ethel Mertz, the plump and fun loving cohort of Lucille Ball in the famous T.V. show, I Love Lucy. I glanced at the back of the store and was alarmed to see ten red puppies in a cage too small for half the litter. From a distance, I could see that the smallest puppy was on the bottom of the pile of her sisters and brothers looking distressed and miserable. My friend was ready to leave and kept calling me, but I was spellbound by the little red puppy with sparkling amber eyes. Often dogs in pet stores are delivered from puppy mills often mistreated, neglected and starving. One of my hopes is one day these cruel factories will be shut down with fines to the owners who perpetrate these unspeakable acts against our devoted best friends. I belong to PETA and the Humane Society who are working to shut down puppy mills to stop over-breeding puppies like Jesse in inhumane and intolerable conditions. Seeing first hand the emotional torment these puppies suffer is alarming and Jesse ignited my passionate mission to stop manufacturing puppies as if they were objects, not live sentient animals. Before I entered the pet store, I had only raised dachshunds never considering that I would want to buy another dog that day, a red Irish Setter that I knew would take a lot of my time to heal her wounds after her painful entrance into the world. Now at ten weeks, she glanced at me for a moment and quickly averted her eyes as if she felt there was danger if our eyes met for too long. My friend had been waiting for more than a hour that seemed like a minute to me as I was magnetically pulled into the cage of this sad and beautiful puppy. I felt she desperately needed attention to prevent further harm to her beautiful soul mirrored in her striking and very somber amber eyes. I hardly heard my friend speak when she asked me why I was taking so long pressed against the glass unable to pull myself out of this rip tide between me and this enigmatic puppy. Time stopped and nothing mattered. I knew I had to grab her now and start loving her back into being before it was too late. I named her Jesse and for six months, I sat on the kitchen floor looking at her, touching her gently and hoping she would begin to trust again. When I first brought her home, her belly was bloated from starvation and all she could swallow was Pepto- Bismol and some rice since it was obvious she was starving for many weeks. To say my efforts paid off is an understatement. Jesse grew into my first major attachment to a dog. We shared my bed and all that Malibu, CA had to offer, especially body surfing in the Pacific. She was a natural in the water enjoying the fury and the peace of the sea. Jesse sat for hours as if she was meditating never moving a muscle. She seemed to have gone back to a place so primal and private yet allowed me to be her silent partner as we both gazed at the majestic beauty of the sea. She allowed me to become a part of a mystical experience that enhanced her wisdom and grace. In retrospect, I saw her as my teacher, one who had given me a window into the autistic mind of the children I would later have the opportunity to treat in a special research group. We grew together and when she passed away, the great spirit that forced its way out of her body left me stunned yet feeling blessed to have known this magical soul. The most profound lesson Jesse taught me was about trust, patience and profound love. /

I have a friend, Brenda, who told me that she sends thoughts of love to all the little creatures around her and she’s certain they respond with trust. I thought of Brenda as I was taking this photo of this female bluebird and I whispered to the tiny mite, “I love you, and I’m so happy you’re part of my world.” I’d like to dedicate this image to Brenda who has such great love for God’s tiniest and most vulnerable creatures and who has a special love for the unborn. May God reward you, Brenda, for the tenderness you have in your heart for the little ones! And I’m happy that you are part of my world, too!

Watch the Video Clip here / . / Last Goodbye / . / This is our last goodbye / I hate to feel the love between us die / But it’s over / Just hear this and then i’ll go / You gave me more to live for / More than you’ll ever know This is our last embrace / Must I dream and always see your face / Why can’t we overcome this wall / Well, maybe it’s just because i didn’t know you at all Kiss me, please kiss me / But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation / You know it makes me so angry ‘cause i know that in time / I’ll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye Did you say ‘no, this can’t happen to me,’ / And did you rush to the phone to call / Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind / Saying maybe you didn’t know him at all / You didn’t know him at all, oh, you didn’t know Well, the bells out in the church tower chime / Burning clues into this heart of mine / Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories / Offer signs that it’s over… it’s over / . / Jeff Buckley RIP
