  • Another not entirely right panorama from a camera my father made. Using these little cameras were a bit of a trick at times but the results were so various and mad that I love them. There are only five in this series. Below is a thumbnail of some Dad’s camera’s His camera always produced much better photo ’s technically than mine but I maintain that the mistakes I made with mine made for a more interesting image :)

  • Behold, the dreamer cometh, / Come now thereforth / and let us slay him…. / and we shall see / what will become / of his dreams….. This is a picture taken in Newtown recently of a legendary mural that adorns the main throughfare, King street. Its a very old (painted in 1991) illegal bit of street art that has subsequently become an iconic part of the area. A very simple design. The face of Martin Luther King next to a large and now very faded reresentation of the world and under that are the first couple of words from a very famous speech given by Dr King. ’ I have a dream….”Underneath it is a representation of the Aboriginal flag. It was a wonderful speech and its a wonderful and enduring mural. It was painted all that time ago by two people who were both very damaged and maybe even a bit mad at the time. He was on the run from the law for a terrible crime and she had just been abandoned by her husband, leaving her destitute with three tiny children and an imminant eviction. They were both artists and met one day when they were both painting something on the side of a building on the same street. In their mutally recognized despair and confusion they decided to reach inside to somewere really deep and give a gift of themselves to all around in order to stave off the darkness that otherwise would have engulfed them and tumbled them right down into the pits of hell. Not far from where they were was a blank three story wall on the side of building on the main street. Perfect. So less than two weeks after they they had met they painted this great humanist message on the side of this building, knowing full well that they risked imprisonment for defacing the street with this simple but profound message of peace and love. And they poured it out over two days and two nights. Never even signed it but rather gave it as a gift to anyone who could see it for what it really meant. Then walked away in the silence of the night not really expecting much from it. But the people of Newtown took this gift in to their hearts and in the ensuing 18 years it has become one of the best loved and most iconic representations of this amazingly diverse and vibrant community. Almost a sacred symbol of Newtown really. Funny story this one. The artists never made a penny out of it and are not even really know for their own work but sometimes just sometimes one of them reflects on the inanity and shallowness of the artworld and wonders why she bothers and then she remembers that sometimes just sometimes the gift of the spirit moves in her and no matter how hard it all is sometimes …. that it really is worthwhile to give of yourself. That it can make a difference to work from the heart. And that thought helps her get through the next bit of time.

  • My uploaded work has been a bit dark and meaningful of late so I’m going to lighten up and post a few pretty pictures to break it all up a bit. This building I am going to assume is quite distictive and you all know what it is and where it is. It’s one of my very favorite public sculptures in the whole wide world. Its just so spendidly itself. But given that its had its picture taken about forty seven million times in its thirty odd years of life, the question is how do you make it seem fresh and shiny and beautiful all over again? My father who was a brilliant photographer and who gifted me with his love of the craft had his own anwer and that was…......to sit and wait ….......and pray and hope that the gods are listening and send along a stunning few moments of evening light….. it was all in the light for him and its all in the light for me…. The other thing that he passed along was a love of unusual ways to capture images and this particular image was taken with one of his very eccentric and marvellous homemade cameras….. yep…. why waste a perfectly good Port box when you can spend a moment or three and turn it into a simply wonderful camera and then load it up with scruptious film ….. say like Veliva or Ektachrome 64….. and then go and sit somewhere beautiful and splendid and wait for the sky to kick in…... and here is a little picture of some of dear old Dad’s homemade cameras…. /

  • Another pretty picture of Sydney town sparkling and beautiful in the sunshine… This is Centrepoint tower in the centre of the city and once more the light was just so. Ahh Sydney in the sunshine….... Oh and just so we are clear on this…. there has been no Photoshop trickery involved in this image…. some tiny bits of dust removal from the slide but that’s it… it is as it is on the original film…. and yes film again….. I just love my film…....:)

  • The Orange I Give To You Acrylics and pigment.

  • A little while ago I posted an image of the Sydney Opera House taken very late in the afternoon while the sky above was the most exquisite shade of gold….. House of Golden Light ... yesterday I found some more slides that complete this series of shots…. there are three in all that were taken from the same spot and show the sky going from deep gold to this heavenly mixture of red and gold and in the next upload the sky will be totally red…... so beautiful…... all shot with transpency film….E6…... and in sequence and all have had mimimal photoshop work ..... a little cleaning up of dust and such like and resizing but no saturating the colours….. they are what was in the sky at the time….. and they are all here as a tribute to my late father and his deep and abiding love of this place and of the art and craft of straight one shot perfection photography….. and his gift of that to me….. / /

  • this is the third in a mini series of shots of taken of the Sydney Opera House late in the day a long time ago…. one magical afternoon as the sky all around me shapeshifted between the magical and the sublime….. all these shots of this marvelous building were taken within about five to ten minutes of each other and all were taken with a very old and peculiar camera loaded with the very finest E6 slide film available…. so never for a moment think its down to equiptment or post processing…. it never is with me….. one shot and nail it….. nothing has been done in Photoshop beyound dust removal and resizing…... and once more this photo is for my dear departed father…. a genius with a camera who had probably forgotten more than I ever knew ….. so this one Dad is also for you…... / /

  • Well I started the day with by taking down ten pages of pictures….. yep count them…. ten pages….... whoo hooo…... and then posted an image taken with my wonderful little Holga of the local coastline and showing a tiny bit of the Seacliff bridge which has got to be one of the most amazing bridges in the country… and we do bridges pretty darned well in this country….... anyway I digress…... so I thought I post another bridge picture…..I figure you all will know were this bridge is…....:) Anyhow a very dear friend…. a man with copious supplies of money but no actual common sense had a sweet little pad right on the foreshore of Lavender Bay and this was the view from his front veranda…...so sweet….... we used to kick back there on the hammock and chill on the view and whatever else it is that aids and abets chillin…..... :) this shot was taken about fifteen years ago and I had totally forgotten about it but from time to time I try and continue what may turn into my lifes work…. digitzing boxes and boxes of analouge capture…. that means film…. from a lifetime spent snapping anything and everything…... the colour in this is the way it scanned and I like it…. it looks like a memory and that is exactly what it is to me…. a memory of a wild and wonderful time…...

  • Dave fell for Johnny, and Johnny, surprised, hesitant and nervous at first, found himself falling in love with Dave. Together they have been declaring their love for each other in grafitti (chalk) on the streets of Sydney. Johnny (street poet) has found his voice (and love) using poetry. Finally, this is the first image of Dave. Quite streetwise and normally fairly private and protective, Dave has been softened by his love for Johnny. Thanks Ben :) From the Dave and Johnny chronicles.

  • I can see worlds in your eyes / Dave / They swirl like comets in your pupils / And trail words / Perfectly formed / Like your love on the ready surface of my skin From the Dave and Johnny chronicles.

  • Not my most earth-shattering shot, but I just loved the looks on the faces of these two … taken in the nocturnal display at the zoo, under strange lighting! Title taken from the old movie / song of the same name (Words by Paul Frances Webster / Music by Sammy Fain) Actually it was originally spelled “splendored” but seems to have morphed to “splendid” over the years.
