It is the hens’ place to admire El Gallo, to vie for the attention of this regal bird. The man has all the power in matters of love, and the woman submits as if under a spell. But perhaps this is an enchantment in itself, as the woman in the painting shows. She controls the eye of El Gallo, tells it where to turn, who to look at. In this relationship, it is difficult to determine who actually controls the other….who is doing the enchanting?
