Rainbow Lorikeets Australian parrots are amazingly colourful and the Rainbow Lorikeet is no exception. Though not as bold as the local (and more numerous) Rosellas and King Parrots, these guys have unique and quirky personalities. / . / This image was shot with about 380mm of zoom, the amazing colours are revealed to best effect by the use of some flash fill which helped to bring out the natural irridescence of the feathers. Kodak KZ740 / F4 . 1/90 . ISO 80 Below – Detail from Rainbow Lorikeets /

I don’t often photograph birds – they are usually way too fast for me! (I’m kinetically challenged – anything that moves faster than the moon or the stars is a major problem for me lol). / Anyway one of the brilliant things about where I live is that we are on a Rainbow Lorikeet superhighway. All day these amazing birds zing back and forth across my yard on exactly the same diagonal trajectory. So I took to feeding them and man was that an experience! At one stage my daughter counted 87 of them on my balcony and this tree waiting to be fed. Talk about a full-colour version of Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. / And then those bastard white cockatoos got in on the act and swooped down in a bunch of about 10 and stood over the Rainbows. Feisty little critters though – even though the white cockatoo mobsters were 5 times their size I saw a couple of these little fellas going for them. / I’ve got some shots but my backyard looks so crap in the background I’m too embarassed to post them.

Two Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus ) cooling down in my birdbath in 40Degrees C ( 100+ F). Frankston South, Australia. 30/01/2009 / The Rainbow Lorikeet mostly forages on the flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar and pollen, but also eats fruits, seeds and some insects. / The eggs of the Rainbow Lorikeet are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow limb of a eucalypt tree. Both sexes prepare the nest cavity and feed the young, but only the female incubates the egg / http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/ / Nikon D300; Lens 80-400 mm Nikkor ED VR / 400mm, 1/350s, f/5.6, ISO: 800

Scaly-breasted Lorikeet This lorikeet is common in most timbered areas of Eastern Australia from Bamaga, the tip of North Queensland, south to Illawarra district on the New South Wales south coast; also on some offshore islands. They are generally confined to coastal plains and adjacent tablelands; occasionally found along watercourses west of the Great Dividing Range. They are abundant and mostly sedentary in north; less numerous and nomadic in the south. They favour open, lightly-timbered areas and melaleuca thickets. / Information Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaly-breasted_Lorikeet Photographic details: / Canon EOS 40D / 300mm, 1/30sec, F13, ISO800.
