The wonderful thing about this photo is that it’s a corner that is no longer there. I spotted this “eye” while walking along in Soho, NYC back in early 2005 and now there is a new Andre Balaz condominium building. So…I’m glad I took the shot now. After all…I’m sure YOU have an eye on someone…so it may give you a “lift” by just looking at it, right? ;)

FINALIST IN THE NOVEMBER + DECEMBER 2008 NATURAL DEVELOPMENTS GROUP. This Thick-tailed gecko Underwoodisaurus milii was found during hand searches in spinifex in western NSW. We enjoyed his company during this early morning photo shoot. This species is reasonably common, in particular, through the granite outcrops of the great dividing range. Click on ‘View Larger” for better viewing. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey, a specialist ecological consultancy that undertakes surveys, research and education programs across Australia.

The guys from Wardan Aboriginal Centre and the Noyt Kobori Spirit Dancers really put on a wonderful traditional performance for us at the Busselton Beach Festival…. the music and dance was spectacular and fascinating to see. The amazing part was how many children from the audience got up to dance as well, given the fact that judging by this face, it might have been a little “scary”!!!! Thank you “David”! This male Cardinal in the apple tree in my backyard in northeast Iowa seemed to be asking, “Are you looking at me?” He looks a bit frosty this morning! Northern Cardinal The male Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird. They’re a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can’t take your eyes off. Even the brown females sport a sharp crest and warm red accents. Cardinals don’t migrate and they don’t molt into a dull plumage, so they’re still breathtaking in winter’s snowy backyards. In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning. The Northern Cardinal is a fairly large, long-tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and a prominent crest. Cardinals often sit with a hunched-over posture and with the tail pointed straight down. Color Pattern / Male cardinals are brilliant red all over, with a reddish bill and black face immediately around the bill. Females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and crest. They have the same black face and red-orange bill. Behavior / Northern Cardinals tend to sit low in shrubs and trees or forage on or near the ground, often in pairs. They are common at bird feeders but may be inconspicuous away from them, at least until you learn their loud, metallic chip note. Habitat / Look for Northern Cardinals in inhabited areas such as backyards, parks, woodlots, and shrubby forest edges. Northern Cardinals nest in dense tangles of shrubs and vines.
