Well I’m rapt to say I got my copy of Desktop Magazine today The magazine for Australian Design: Digital Culture and my photo essay and article about Rwanda is in it. / I have scanned it in here for you to see (there’s five pages) but I encourage you to check out the magazine. It’s great (the magazine that is) and I’m grateful to Joe Spurling the Editor. / As requested by me they mention Red Bubble at the end and given this mag has readership of 45,000 I’d say that’s good (does this excuse me for whinging emails Peter? :) This is the article I wrote to accompany the photos. It’s called Thirteen years ago. And unfortunately, it’s true. In April of this year I went as a volunteer photographer to Rwanda in Central Africa to document work done by some charities there. Most people have heard of the film ‘Hotel Rwanda.’ This gets mixed reviews from Rwandans as all the Rwandans I spoke with considered it to be a Hollywood version and not particularly accurate. These Rwandans ask that people watch ‘Sometimes in April’ – a much more realistic and less ‘glamorous’ take on events. In fact they plead for people to watch it. Thirteen years ago, Rwanda suffered a horrific genocide. Over one million people were butchered in just one hundred days, with further hundreds of thousands dying from disease in the aftermath. This was not a frenzied attack at the hands of demented strangers, or even greedy invaders. These sickening assaults were carried out by neighbours, family, colleagues, or inconceivably even life-long ‘friends’; with the most intimate of weapons, bare hands, clubs and machetes. Husbands killed wives, teachers killed students, Doctors poisoned patients. Day after torturous day. In Rwanda April is the official month of mourning. The one-month of the year when victims openly give flight to the morbid memories that malign their minds. The shots you see here are of Rwandans praying. And they are all taken in April. When Rwandans pray, they pray with their arms, their hands, their eyes and their souls. Their intention is palpable, their spirit immense. Their pain resonates and their dismay is suffocating. Yet, through all this, the tiniest glimmer of hope reveals itself. As if set alight by courage, and relentless conviction. They say faith moves mountains. It did move me. And so I emerged. Photos in hand. Legacy in heart. And one indisputable truth in my mind. There but by the grace of God, that could have been me. To find out more about Rwanda and how you can help go to www.cnecpi.com.au

Ever wonder how to get that soft glamour look in a portrait like in my image She’s Got It Made In The Shades...
Ever wonder how to get that soft glamour look in a portrait like in my image She’s Got It Made In The Shades / / I use Adobe PhotoShop CS3 (PS), but earlier versions will work as well, and the techniques can be adapted to other similar photo editing software. Also note that I use a Mac so I’ll be using the OPTION key which is the ALT key on a PC and COMMAND key which is the CONTROL key on a PC. So if you’re on a PC substitute the appropriate keys. Open your image in PS. / Duplicate the layer. / Select Levels from the Image->Adjustments menu item and make any necessary level adjustments and click on ok when you are satisfied. / Select the burn tool and set it to burn shadows at an opacity of around 10% ±3%. While keeping the mouse button down burn the dark area you wish to enhance. / Now switch to the dodge tool by hitting SHIFT-O which cycles through the burn/sponge/dodge tools. / Set the dodge tool to highlights with a similar opacity to what we had with the burn tool. / Use the dodge tool to enhance the lighter areas of the image. / I suggest that you only do a little bit at a time of dodging and burning and alternate often between them. / These two tools act as a controlled contrast. / Once you are satisfied with the burning and dodging, duplicate that layer. / Temporarily turn off all layers except the one you just created. You can do this by OPTION-clicking the layer you wish to remain active. / Now here comes the fun stuff. / Open up the Channels palette which is usually right next to Layers. Assuming you are in RGB mode you will see the RGB composite channel, and the individual red, green, and blue channels. For most people the red channel is the smoothest, and lightest on skin. / COMMAND-click the icon for the red channel. You should see the “marching ants” which means that a selection has been made. / Now click on the RGB channel and switch back to Layers. / Making sure the layer we previously made active is selected, add a layer mask by clicking on the layer mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette. / It will look like part of the image is missing. OPTION-click the “eye” on the active layer to bring back the other layers. / Unlink the mask from the layer by clicking on the little chain icon and then click on the image icon in the layer to select it. / Go to Filters->Blur->Surface Blur. Adjust the setting to a fairly strong blur and click OK. / The image should now have a very smooth look to it. / Set the blend mode for that layer to Luminosity and adjust the opacity to taste. That is basically how I do this effect. Feel free to experiment and come up with your own techniques. I hope this was helpful, and not too confusing. It’s easier to do this than to explain it. lol! :)

I found this old photo and I thought it will be fun to share with everyone here ;D This was taken 5 years ago…when I was only 27…and living in Bangkok because of work assignments. I never thought of taking up painting, that was the last thing on my mind because I was so busy working and the corporate pace of life in Singapore is really crazy! Things took for a change the 2 years when I was in Bangkok…due to the much slower pace of life…I felt my mind could have more space for other things other than work. Partly due to my ex-boyfriend’s (who’s now my husband) influence, I took up painting as a hobby :D That was how I entered the world of painting so to speak…just a little sharing of my history here. I’ve been painting owls since day 1 and it feels funny looking back at these older owl paintings, hope you enjoy these Ophelia pioneers (sorry, not sure why I cant get the pic to be bigger) :D Good news! I sold my first calendar Ophelia’s Thought Realm here on RB! Many thanks to someone named Nuk3!! ^ _ ^ I made some sales over at zazzle too…I also want to thank the following bubblers, Stephaniek for purchasing this tee, And Macabrecat for purchasing this magnet, Do stop by at these 2 fabulous bubblers’ galleries to catch a glimpse of their wonderful photography!! Here’re some others which are being purchased :D The Dreamer tie, this is my first Tie sale! The Sower postage The Love Ambassador magnet Hope Lifts Me Higher Postcard Hope Lifts Me Higher is also being featured in Painted Birds! group, thank you hosts for the feature!! ^ _ ^ Thanks so much for reading! And for being such a supportive and enthusiastic bunch of people whether it be here on RB or over at Zazzle! Many many thanks from the bottom of my heart!! :D

Then let me introduce you to Esther and Ross, my local greengrocers at Glenbrook. Esther and Ross bought the little greengrocer business about 3 months ago. As locals, we all waited with anticipation wondering what sort of changes they would make to what had been a tired little fruit and vegie shop. Please take a close look at the artwork on their walls…look familiar?? They certainly looked familiar to me and finally, after doing a little project for Esther and Ross, I got around to asking them about their artwork. The conversation went sort of like this: Adriana: Esther, I’ve been meaning to mention to you – that apple print, where did you get that from? Esther: Oh, from the internet… (Adriana immediatley jumps to conclusion that the image has been bought from a fake site, rather than original owner’s site. Cue melodramatic music. Facial expression is one of shock and horror and perplexion. Esther, seeing this and hearing the music, quickly clarifies.) Esther: You see this friend of mine told me about this website where you can buy all this artwork. It’s called RedBubble. (At this point, Adriana promptly faints flat on the floor not believing what she’s hearing.) Esther: (while picking Adriana up off the floor continues) She told me if I wanted to buy artwork for the shop, I really only needed to go to RedBubble and I would find all the images I wanted. So I searched for the fruit and vegie images I was after and bought the posters. Adriana: Wow, OMG, I have to journal this and let the others know that there are real buyers out there _ And that all they need to do is tag their work. _(wistful look that lingers like a daytime soap cliffhanger dream sequence. Cue more melodramtic music.) (End of conversation, and reality descends once more) So, here’s the photo I took of a proud Esther and Ross showing the artwork they bought on RedBubble. You’ll recognise the artwork of Jerry Alcantara here, here, here as well as an image from shall here and an image from Renee Tran here . There are 3 other posters hanging on the opposite wall, also by Jerry Alcantara’s . And what have we learnt: / 1. Tag your work. Pretend you’re a buyer – how would you find your work on RedBubble? Use appropriate tags that are relevant to your image. / 2. That real people buy artwork on RedBubble, and not just friends and family and ourselves. / 3. That Redbubble in Melbourne can act as an avenue to sell the work of photographeric artists in Italy, the US and UK to a business in Glenbrook, NSW, Australia and is seen by hoardes of tourists everyday. / 3. That I needn’t bother with pursuing scriptwriting in the future. ; p

Hello hello, Today we had a little micro release. I thought the old comment replies looked pretty ugly (hard to read) so our friendly Internet programer type person Russ made them look better. We’ve also released a new checkout screen which we’re testing on a small percentage of all checkouts here. The idea is that we’ll test the new page over the next couple of days to make sure it works for 100% of folks and then release it site wide on Monday. To view the page you’ll need something in your cart. For those of you with an inclination toward t-shirt design a new site-wide challenge was launched a recently: Attention all t-shirt designers. Put down your piña coladas as there will be no January holiday for you this year! The folks at London street wear store Demo were so blown away by the response to the London Calling competition, they want to do it all over again. They’re giving you the chance to get your t-shirt design in their shop window, just by London’s Carnaby Street. Your theme is ‘Sound’. That’s right, the stuff you can hear. The theme is open to wide interpretation so you could choose to cover anything from music through to cochlear implants. You can find out more here Ciao, - Peter

Hey all, I’m looking to illustrate a kid’s book.. a Monster ABC. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and originally I was planning on doing the art in my usual vector style eg. Clive the Bunyip However, while as an adult I do love the clean lines and bright colours vector art gives me, I know kids books in general tend more towards the texture and visual richness of traditional art styles, paint and pencil and the like. My latest illustration, as well as being an entry into the Drawing Day challenge, was a chance for me to experiment with a more painterly style. A friend suggested that the painted work is more warm and friendly, and would be a better style for kids. The downside is it’s very new to me, so I’ll have to learn techniques and try to improve as I go. That illustration was done very quickly while our baby was sleeping, so it’s a bit messier than I’d be looking at anyway. So here is my question. Which style is better? The vector art is good because it’s bright, and I’m comfortable with the style – the work will be more polished and cleaner. The painted style has greater depth and warmth to it, although it’s not as finished and I would need to learn a lot as I go. Or I could do something in between.. clean vector lines like ink with painted colours for the texture. What do you think?
/ There are a lot of…
/ There are a lot of things regarding this image that remain as a complete mystery to me up to this day. / First weird thing was the choice of the main figure. All of sudden one day I decided to create a 3D rendered image by recreating Mata Hari, the Dutch-Frisian exotic dancer and courtesan who was executed by firing squad for espionage during World War I. Why I choose Mata Hari? Mmmm…Heaven knows! / And this was the image of her that I intented to recreate. / So I opened my cinema 4D software, imported Victoria 4 (the basic female Poser figure) into it by using the InterPoser plugin; then I positioned her in a similar pose to that of Mata Hari, and from that point on I started the hard task to create/build rest of elements such as cloths, hairdo and accessories. Considering that I just wanted to recreate the original image, and not to make an exact copy of it, I decided to take some liberties regarding most of these elements. / This was the first result. The original idea was that of obtaining an alpha image so that it´d be relatively easy to create a convenient background for it. / I exported it into Photoshop and started experimenting with several background options, mainly outdoors photographs from old buildings. Then I realized that there was a problem with the camera angle; none of the available background options matched with the original camera angle; so, to make things short, have to say that none of them finally worked out . / So I had to went back to cinema 4D in order to create a background for the main image. I tried with different options with no acceptable results till I recall I had this portentous Temple Of Megaera, a DAZ 3D product I had bought some time ago. This time I made a full render _ main figure plus the Temple_ avoiding hard shadows. I still don´t know why I took this decision; cause I use to work with well defined shadows, mostly the hard ones. / Then, I went back to Photoshop again. I resized the canvas in order to concentrate the view on the main character. I knew I had to give up the idea of using a full color image and that it´d be necessary to desaturate it in order to give it a vintage look; but how? / Well, those were the days when I first met Redbubble, and I was deeply impressed by artists such as Martin Muir and Headcrime, also WanderingSoulArt _ navybrat came later to me, or it was viceversa?_ just to mention a few of those ones who can achieve highly impressive artistic results by texturing and blending layers, that´s to say, the compositing techniques. So I ask myself: why not trying to do something similar with this image? / So I search the web for some free textures. I found very interesting sites, image*after, for instance, which is a large online free photo collection. I downloaded one of their free texture images _ sorry, don´t remember which one_ and blended it with the original render by using the overlay mode. ( I had previously desaturated the original image). / And this was the resulting image. / / Have to confess that I never thought of having these results. All I wanted was to create an image with a vintage feel. It was more of “let´s see what I can do with this”, just a simple try, I mean. / Now, one of the main mysteries for me resides on the wide acceptance that this image has had among viewers: 67 comments, 51 favoritings and 2380 views. / But what impresses me the most are comments such as “…it reminds me of an old horror ghost film”, “a little scary”, “haunting”, “very eerie and mysterious”, “the creepy subject, textures and fantastic background…”. / Needless to say I´m more than honoured by these and other comments viewers have made for this image. But now you can see that I was miles away from trying to create a haunting, or creepy, or even a ghostly looking of it. Honest. / I´m very proud of VIntage Study No. 1 and it´s been my pleasure to share this image, as well as the process of creating it with all of you. Thanks a lot for your kind support. / .

I keep coming across beautiful images and cards that I would love to buy but I am put off of some that have words or borders because when I check them in the preview the borders are uneven or the wording is cut off. It is due to the small crop that Red Bubble does when printing them out. I am also reluctant to buy cards of images that are not the right size and you end up with them looking lost in card format. I am guilty of this myself and have been going through my large gallery and amending them. I have therefore rounded up what I hope will help us get them right. Knowledge Base: cropping and borders / We want your images to look amazing for your customer, and how you intended. The products have been designed to make your images look their best without the needing to add borders on your image files. The production of some products will require a small crop of 1-2mm but this is mostly unnoticeable. When making a purchase, the previews that you see on RedBubble should accurately reflect how the image will be positioned and cropped so use these as a guide For cards aspect ratio matters which is about 3:2 Here are the resolution thresholds for each of our products: Greeting Cards: 1300×900 pixels (1 megapixel) Matted Prints: 1800×1260 pixels (2.5 megapixels) Laminated, Mounted and Framed Prints and Stretched Canvas: / o 2400×1600 pixels (4 megapixels) for the small print / o 3240×2160 pixels (7 megapixels) for the medium print / o 3840×2560 pixels (10 megapixels) for the large print Posters: / o 2500×3500 pixels for the smallest print / o 3500×5000 pixels for the medium print / o 5000×7100 pixels for the large print Calendar images: 2182×1906 pixels for the months and 2371×2875 pixels for the cover Clothing: exactly 2400×3200 pixels (and the file must be a PNG). Notes Please do not manually change the pixel dimensions of your image. We use the number of pixels in an image to determine which sizes are appropriate – if you change the pixel dimensions you will trick our quality control software – but the products will come out looking blocky and horribly pixelated. If your image size or format is not right, this might restrict you from selling some products. We automatically determine which products your file can be used to create, so that we only ship products that both you and we can be proud of. Images above 60Mb, or 10,000×10,000 pixels in size, cannot be accepted on the site due to the unreasonable load they place on our servers. If you’re uploading files larger than 20MB they should probably be compressed or scaled down a bit — we don’t print billboards yet! File Format / We accept JPEG or PNG files (we don’t accept TIFF or PDF files). Colour Profile / We prefer the sRGB colour space (our printers are calibrated to sRGB). All of the above tips were found around Red Bubble I hope this helps, I thought thast having the info in one place would be helpful as I had to search around for it all If you do need to amend an image, no need to delete and upload afresh, just amend your image with your software and upload new version under the original in my bubble…....... / art…....... / and / using the change this image function under edit PLEASE check out this link too

click here to view a Stefan Sagmeister video Yes, Design Can Make You Happy / Here’s my book, it says ‘for KARIN TAYLOR with many greetings FROM Sagmeister’ hey there….as you know I have a pretty wild imagination and following the recent arrival of the design book by Stefan Sagmeister called ‘MADE YOU LOOK’ which I won in the Happy Challenge I had a dream where I actually met Stefan… there I was in a puddle of ‘self-doubt’ when he turns around and invites me to work on a project… I rush around excitedly yelling ‘yes!! yes!! yes!!!’ and suddenly realise in another fit of despair…i have no idea what i’m doing or how i’m gonna pull it off…and feeling an absolute fraud… lol … anyway, here is the signed front cover of this wonderful publication I just received! / My entry Affirmation which came 2nd place in the Top Ten of the Happy Challenge collaboration between Stefan Sagmeister and Red Bubble It’s the coolest thing since sliced bread…. if you can get a copy….. the funniest thing I’ve read so far is on page 138 and is called ‘Designer Biographies – Frightfully Real! STORIES Practically taken from everyday life’ and i can only tell you that it had me in hysterics and provided some excellent comic relief… it’s a comic look at a day in the life of…. all the things that can and do go wrong… and paves the way to having a good laugh at oneself… and the crazy thoughts and messes we get ourselves into, trying to be diplomatic, trying to go the extra mile, being rejected, giving til your spent, everything going wrong… and falling into bed fragile and exhausted….the day began crappy to start with too…ever had one of those. This book is a great insight into the man Stefan Sagmeister, his humour, his process, his stories, his life so far all laid bare in ‘MADE YOU LOOK’ ... and it’s just brilliant to be able to see parallels of his thinking and thought processes with my own ...very cool indeed, and very heartening. So THANK YOU Stefan and THANK YOU Pilgrim and others at RedBubble who made this all possible…..you made my day

Hey all, I’ve commented in the past about how RedBubble isn’t really a place for teaching and learning.. I mean the capabilities are there in the form of critique forums and the like, but it’s not really part of the goals of the site. Which is fair enough. However, I truly believe if I’m not improving in whatever I’m doing I might as well not be doing it. Which leads me to this. I know that there are many talented photographers, artists and illustrators following me, and so I’m going to ask you guys for help. What I’d like to do is occasionally, when time permits, do an illustration purely as a test of a style, technique, or ability. Then I’ll post it and add a journal entry asking you guys for feedback. If you’ve got the time and inclination to hop on and tell me honestly what you think I will be forever grateful. I really want to hear what isn’t quite right, and hopefully suggestions for how I could improve, what I should do differently, even ideas for future experiments to help me. The improvement is the key. So if my lighting is shabby (which it is) what should I be doing to get better. I’ll open with this illustration I posted a couple of days back. This was an idea I had, and I started sketching and decided what the hell, I might as well have at it with a biro. Usually I’ll scan a sketch and move stuff around to get it right before jumping in to “ink” it, which is why this has some not-quite-right elements to it. I also decided to colour it very basically in painter because I liked the effect :) Let me kick it off – The figure proportions are a bit dodgy. I’m not so concerned about the more cartoony style of the face, but I think maybe the head is a bit big, the arms too thick and generally everything is a bit stumpy. The angle is also a bit weird.. I was hoping it’d look a bit like someone lying on a hill, with the city off in the distance.. but I’m not sure how to get the hill to look right. I like the monster, especially the shading of the head which matches up to the background.. I think this helps make it look gigantic. I was a bit worried about this.. again, I’m not sure how to represent the distance properly to make it look a long way away. Suggestions on this would be most appreciated. Oh, and my shading is a bit dodgy. Maybe I need to work from photos a bit more. Okay, well yeah, any advice or feedback you might have would be most appreciated. I assure you I will listen and take on board all of it, and hopefully you’ll see some improvement in the next experiment. Any suggestions for what I should try out next would be good too. Cheers :) / Damien

We here on this wonderful site are a beautiful mix of inspiring and caring people with such creative talent but foremost what stands out to me tonight as I look at being here now for just over a year.. Is the community spirit of true fellowship based on just being there for each other while sharing and enjoying our creative offerings. And a willingness to encourage each other, be inspired and reach out to those that just may need to know that they are part of something truly life promoting… As this year draws to conclusion I wanted to find some words that were a honest expression of me right now and I did with this old offering from when I was a very much a new kid on the RB Block. Here is a link to a few words on my hope for 2010 which is also very much my hope for you all. Much love to you all KarenSue xxx
