My first t-shirt design using one of my most popular photographs. This image of a classic London telephone box was taken near the Embankment tube stop. I removed all the color in the image and then by hand brushed the B&W layer away exposing just the vivid spot color of the red booth using photoshop. A street photography shot taken in East London 2007. I went back there recently and this image has been completely painted over. I’m glad I was able to capture what was a brief yet beautiful scene that has now gone forever

Pastel on Kitty Wallis sanded pastel paper, from “The White Album” series. The tooth of this sanded paper takes many layers of pastel. I prime the surface with rust colored nupastel rubbed in with turpenoid before working. Inspired by the Beatles cover of Carole King’s tune of the same name. “Chains, my baby’s got me locked up in chains and they ain’t the kind that you can see, oh oh these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah!” In April 2007, “Chains” won round 2 of the International Saatchi Showdown Online Competition and was shown at the Saatchi Gallery in London. I received this email January 6th, 2009 from the Saatchi Gallery: Dear Alice I am delighted to inform you that your work is currently being exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery – please find attached a photograph of your work on display. Below is the label that we are using for the work. Shoreditch , East London , 2008 evereddy © 2009 Urban Umbra This image has been nominated for the prestigous Pay it Forward Group, by Tainia Finlay and this is what she very kindly had to say about it… “I love this not only for the colour but also the feeling of times past, taken in Shoreditch, London. This building has withstood two world wars and could say so much about life over the years in that part of London. Umbra has a unique way of illustrating candid street life in London. When I think of England my mind goes straight to the days of corseted, uptight, tea drinking, society climbing women and their frigid men…. (think I read too many Jane Austin books in my youth) This is my version of that day for us to wear without the pain of it! White for the lovely SoxyFlemming!
