Chateau de Villandry – a 16th century late Renaissance chateau in the Loire Valley, France…..famous for it’s magnificent gardens. The Loire Valley, with a great number of chateaux, is listed with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. / / This recreated Renaissance garden at Villandry is like a tapestry changing with the seasons. / The gardens are on three levels. At the top, from where this photo is taken, is a water garden fringed with ancient lime trees, then on the next level down, a flower garden level with the chateau and then below that is the world’s largest ornamental kitchen garden. Eight full time gardeners maintain the gardens at Villandry. They raise and plant 60,000 vegetable and 45,000 bedding plants each year. / It truly is a delight to the senses. Built on a granite promontory over looking the river Loire. Charles V111 decided to rebuild it extensively, when it fell into French hands in 1492. He employed an Italian architect and three French builders Colin Bart, Guillauime Senault and Loise Armangeart. At the the time of Charles V111, an Italian priest, Pasello da Mercogliano, is credited with laying it out. / Francoise was raised here by his Mother Louise Savoy. / As a guest of the King, Leonardo da Vinci lived nearby at Clos Luce which was connected to the castle by an underground passage. He is buried in the chapel of saint Hubert ajoining the chateau. / Henry11 and his wife Cathrine de Medici raised their children here along with Mary Suart, a child birde to Francois son Francoise 11. Mary Queen of Scots later lived with her husband Francoise11 at Chateau Chenonceau but he died a few years later.
In the reign of Francoise 1 this beautiful Chateau of Azay was built in 1515 by Gilles Berthelot. / The lake gently reflects the facade of the architecture with high roofs,tall turrets,long windows and magestic Italian structure which gives a wonderful symmetrical image. authors note: I spent two weeks here sketching the Chateau and enjoying the wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. The chateau is close to Chateau Villandry.

Built in the 16th century is known worldwide for its gardens which combine flowers and vegetable in intricate beds. / Arcaded galleries of the main courtyard, the castle keep and gardens were tended by monks since medieval times. It is very close to Chateau Azay le Rideau, and almost contemporary with it. authors note: Stunning location to paint, I had a great time and got given some grapes which were sweet and delicious.

I was thrilled to be able to visit Villandry Castle in the Loire Valley of France. We had planned several trips to the Loire in the past that we had to cancel for one reason or another so it was great to be able to visit a couple of the chateau. Villandry was finished in 1536 and was one of the last chateaus built during the Renaissance. It is famous for its enormous formal gardens. Gear: Nikon D80, AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED

The western face of the graceful arches of Chateau de Chenonceau reflected in the gentle waters of the River Cher. The grand Florentine gallery was added by Catherine de Médicis. Loire Valley, France. It’s a standard shot of this chateau, yes, but you can also see why.
