  • Just delving back a few years to a picture from Shap Abbey in Westmorland (now Cumbria) and on the eastern borders of the Lake District. More details of this wonderful abbey will follow if and when I get round to putting up some pictures! / However, as is so often the case with our treasured abbeys, the location of Shap Abbey is such a potent part of the whole experience. As you stroll towards the west tower you pass by the River Lowther with the blur of a dipper coming to rest on a stone to “dip” up and down before plunging into the rushing waters, whilst above, on the bank, trees, gnarled with age and battered by the harsh climate cling on to life for hundreds of years watching patiently as the abbey slowly returns to Nature’s grasp. / Thanks for looking, / Richard

  • A little creativity and some brute strength have gone into making this seat, many years ago, situated along the track to Phantom Falls, in the Otways. Psalm 37:34 / 34 Wait on the LORD, / And keep His way, / And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; / When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

  • The Rainforests of the Tarkine, some 177,000 hectares, include the largest unbroken stand of rainforest in Australia. A relic from the ancient continent, Gondwanaland, the Tarkine rainforest is one of the most significant temperate rainforests on earth. It is home to 56 threatened and endangered species, such as the Giant Freshwater Crayfish – the world’s largest freshwater invertebrate and the Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagle – the largest Eagle in Australia. These rainforests are recognised as being one of the most significant tracts of temperate rainforest on earth, and are under imminent threat. While logging of pure stands of rainforest is occurring in and around the periphery of the Tarkine, the logging industry is pushing the Tasmanian Government to allow logging through the heart of the Tarkine Rainforests. This would divide the rainforest and seriously fragment the Tarkine’s wilderness qualities. Information sourced from John Merory I recently had the pleasure of working with Maree Jenkins who is soon to be opening her Tarkine Wilderness Lodge in the heart of the Tarkine Rainforest. Maree shared with me her love and intense passion for this very important little corner of the world. By establishing the Lodge as a viable tourism venture Maree hopes to stave off the chainsaws and brutal machinery of the Government which threaten to steal the life breath of the forest, stripping it of its natural beauty. Save our forests. They desperately need our voice for they have no voice of their own.

  • Lyrup Flats – Backwater area of the mighty River Murray between Berri and Renmark in the Riverland of South Australia. A log jam divides water laying in small pools in amongst dead river redgum trees. Canon 400D 18-55 lens with CIR Polarising filter. Two shot pano stitch in Photoshop CS3.

  • Watercolor on Bainbridge Board – Cold Pressed 12” x 16”

  • Banded (Northern) Brown Tree Snake. I love the “gecko” type eyes on these snakes, but they are not for loving pets. these can get very aggressive with several strikes to a victim if they feel threatened. They are a venomous snake, however their venom fangs are set in the back of the mouth, so it takes a rather large one to inject venom into a human. This species was introduced to Guam in WWII, and since had multiplied into huge numbers, seriously threatening the bird fauna there. This is one of the only reptile species that became an introduced pest anywhere in the world. Canon 50D, 85mm. Sydney Wildlife World, Darling Harbour. Available Large! :)

  • Taken at dawn, Lake Glenmaggie, Victoria. Even though the water level is around 19%, there are still plenty of opportunities for the photographer who’s willing to get up early and walk around in thick, heavy mud that’s around 4 inches deep. And then afterward drive up to the local car wash to pressure wash your boots and your tripod… Shot with a Nikon D200, 12-24mm lens at 17mm, F/11, 100 ISO. 7 shot HDR, merged/mapped in Photomatix, touched up in Photoshop. BEST VIEWED LARGER Also from this shoot: Please also see Lawrence Norton’s beautiful work from the same shoot:
