Sepia Toned of a previous…Morning sun filters through the trees at John Olivers Cabin with a few dogwoods in the background…..The Oliver’s bought land in the Cove in 1826 and this cabin site remained in the family until the Park was established. The house is typical of many found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s, and reflects the skills and techniques brought into the mountains by descendants of British and European immigrants…..Split-rail fences require much more timber than other types of fences, and so are not common in areas where wood is scarce or expensive. However, they are very simple in their construction, and can be assembled with few tools even on hard or rocky ground. They also can be built without using any nails or other hardware; such hardware was often scarce in frontier locations. These fences are sometimes refered to as Worm Fence due to the back and forth placements…This cabin is located on the Cades Cove Loop Road, in the Great Smoky Mountain N.P.
Unfortunately this is one of the areas that was affected by “Black Saturday”, I am so hoping that this little pocket of Myrlte beech forest wasnt touched by the fires. There were fires in the Blue Range, Marysville National park. The Myrtle beech trees have been around since the Jurassic period. I stood in the river with my jeans rolled up to my knees, the water had slowed nearly to a stillness as it gathered around the rocks in the water that were covered with moss, as I hit the timer button on my camera in that 10 seconds I had time to reflect on the raw beauty of this ancient forest. The forest that stood before me was thousands of years old. It was summer out beyond these beautiful old trees it was a stinking hot day, the flies stuck to my body, I found relief in the river and under the ancient old tree. Under the ancient trees it was freezing, for some strange reason it was like the middle of winter under the trees and my feet and legs were numb from the icy water that I stood in. A little creativity and some brute strength have gone into making this seat, many years ago, situated along the track to Phantom Falls, in the Otways. Psalm 37:34 / 34 Wait on the LORD, / And keep His way, / And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; / When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
This was some good advice here ….. Pier? What Pier !!! / This image is “As Is”, absolutely nothing done to it, straight out of my new D300, which I think will serve me rather well.
Appalachian life styles from days gone by / This little log cabin restored to it’s original beauty stands along a country road in the western part of Kentucky. The new addition of the air conditioner in the window made me smile. Times have changed alot since the cabin was originally built! It’s hard to believe that one room cabins such as this housed families with several children and Father and Mother in days gone by! Strong family ties were grounded forever in such small living quarters where there was no privacy and one was expected to give “thanks” for simply having a “roof over head” and food on the table. How different are the families of today with each member having their “own room” complete with all the electronics such as computers, TV’s, sound systems, ALL which has enhanced aloneness within the family. Perhaps the old log cabin was NOT such a bad idea after all!
Heres another little cutie I got along with the chickadees and cardinals .. thanks for all your help in telling me what little bird this is .. I thought he was a woodpecker but then got confused along the way somehow lol

Banded (Northern) Brown Tree Snake. I love the “gecko” type eyes on these snakes, but they are not for loving pets. these can get very aggressive with several strikes to a victim if they feel threatened. They are a venomous snake, however their venom fangs are set in the back of the mouth, so it takes a rather large one to inject venom into a human. This species was introduced to Guam in WWII, and since had multiplied into huge numbers, seriously threatening the bird fauna there. This is one of the only reptile species that became an introduced pest anywhere in the world. Canon 50D, 85mm. Sydney Wildlife World, Darling Harbour. Available Large! :)

This is one of a set of x3 images that I have brought together for a challenge in the new group “The Fibonacci Sequence”, and relates to Abstract Reality and the trunk of trees. / . / The other night when I was splitting wood for the fire, I split this log to open it up and find this. / What you see is a macro of the split log. / And in the colouring, is where the sap has bled and seeped throughout the surrounding area. / The dark pieces in the bottom half, is where the sap has crystalized. / ( Jindabyne is a town located in N.S.W. ) taken with a p&s Panasonic Lumix FZ30 and is set on Manual Macro. =============
