Heart of Gold is a mixed media production on watercolour paper / and one of my most recent paintings The painting itself was inspired by a response to Sylvia, the character in Bryce Courtney’s novel who led the Children’s Crusades during medieval times. In my painting, Sylvia is on a quest, just as I am, always searching for a heart of gold. She has the key to unlocking goodness and kindness and truth hanging from her belt, and she carries a staff with a beautiful flower and wears a crown, symbolising that she is both shepherdess and a leader of her people. Her horse also wears a heart around his neck. They rely on one another for support and encouragement during difficult times.

/ This image was inspired by my Grandmothers house. My Grandmother had a very long garden….gorgeous lawn and flowers that led onto a vegetable garden at the bottom alongside an apple tree that I remember climbing and falling out of as a small boy…..picking the apples in the Autumn…great stuff. I also remember stuffing my sister up the tree when she was 3 and not letting her back down….how she howled! Anyway…..the bottom of the garden led to a wood that was kept at bay by a large stone wall in which there was a locked door. I used to terrify my sister with tales of goblins and monsters peering at her through the key hole…..and if she got too close they would reach over the wall, grab her and gobble her up! I told her this for two reasons….....one because I believed it and two…..I was an evil little bastard who wanted to terrify his sister….......It still scares me still!

We’ve all had that moment where we see a lock, and wish to know just what its protecting, what’s behind it, and why is it there.

This door detail was photographed in Avanos, a small town in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey. The bright colors and old wood of houses and doors in these small towns are often beautiful and always intriguing. The splintered wood, tooled brass lock and handle, and encroaching shadow give this piece a sense of mystery for me.

I sit here today, all by myself with plenty of thoughts in my head. This was a thought on paper. I don’t know what it means, but I think it’s pretty darn cool. Enjoi!

Ok….so this is the last of this series….I know I always say that but I’m not telling porkies this time…...I have enjoyed doing them immensely. This is the first time I have seen something other than what I think would make a pleasing image and photographing it…....I saw each one of these images in my head as I looked at the door and thought about what it encompassed…..it had to be more than just a door….I felt that it had stories to tell…..right down to the last nail. These images have been what it made me see…..another onlooker would see something different. I have always looked at things in this way…....but I have never had the skills or the confidence to communicate my thoughts artistically to this extent….there were brief flashes….I teach Design and Technology but am very much at the technology end. I work with very talented individuals who sparked a creative journey that has its roots in a life long interest in photography. I grew up in a safe, loving environment with two wonderful humans as parents….but it was very much Science or die…....my first degree is in electronics…...I didnt know I had this in me….it may look amateurish to the more advanced and accomplished members of this site…...but it if it was not for this site I would not even have attempted this…..I feel very satisfied with what I have produced and how I have grown since August. It pained me to read Stuart Chapmans journal entry which mentioned his not understanding negative comments about the site…..I second that most wholheartedly…...I cant understand the negativity…...this site is remarkable….a one off and I thank its members for the inspiration and encouragement that has opened me up….if I knew I could do this 20years ago….......who knows?
