Its long pointed bracts arch with a particularly pleasing curvature. Its fan shaped clumps, up to 12 feet high, thrive as well in Hawai’i as in its native Costa Rica and Panama. Full sun, ample water, warm air, high humidity, and good soil are all it needs. However, in blooming season, March to May, is short; current research is aimed at expanding its period of availability. Rainbow heliconia resembles giant lobster claw. However, its unopened bracts form a jagged herringbone pattern, its “cheeks” are smaller and its yellow colouration is greenish rather than bright.”: Text quote from the book titled Exotic Tropicals of Hawai’i by Angela K. Kepler It is a beautiful greeting card. We have many varieties of Heliconia blooming on Maui. If you are interested in a particular variety or colour simply drop me a note and let me know. Mahalo!

I was returning from a day of Cod fishing off the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland when I passed by these Lobster Pots. They were stacked along the road, next to a small wharf in a very, very tiny fishing village. I thought the vibrant colors of the pots contrasted nicely with the gloomy, overcast day and the grey rocks.
See extra large view here Heading for Sister’s Beach, Tasmania, I saw a glimpse of water through the bush and turned up the next dirt road to investigate…...............I found Lake Llewellyn, which appeared to be formed by the damming of Sister’s Creek and which I managed to identify from the sign at the edge of a small boat ramp. A couple of small cottages were located along it’s bank and the opposite bank appeared totally inaccessible. It was a beautiful location but wasn’t marked on the map so on my return to mainland Oz I decided to research it via google. I am nevertheless, none the wiser as info is scant. What I did learn though is that it is home to the Giant Freshwater Lobster, the biggest freshwater invertebrate in the world growing to a metre in length and up to 4kg in weight. An endangered and now totally protected species, it is the research as to it’s endangerment that discovered it in several locations in the SW when it was originally believed to only inhabit Northern rivers emptying into the Bass Strait. Females do not mature until approx 14 yrs of age and males around 9yrs and they spawn only once every two years, this, and the fact that they were once hunted, has led to their decline. I took this shot in one of the many outport communities along Newfoundland’s Avalon Penninsula. There were so many of these crabpots stacked along side many different sheds. / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography /

I went for a drive this afternoon in search of more bergs and I came across this coastal scene. I love photographing anything with a lobster pot in it. The iceberg on the horizon added a very cool element to the shot I thought. / / From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. / / An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography
Vibrant, flamboyant panting of the colorful homes and harbours found in the Atlantic Canada provinces and in the Maine, New England areas. I spent many vacations with my family in these beautiful quarters and there is something so heart warming about the architecture, harbours, the many seaside shops, cafes, and restaurants; and of course the beautiful ocean and all the fishing boats and seagulls. It reminds me of summer and the way it should be.

This is replacing a previous version I had uploaded. I applied a ND filter to it to make the fog thicker and sharpened it up a bit more.
