  • For those who never had the pleasure of being inside the lobby of the World Trade Center, this is how it looked around the year 1980.

  • This most amazing five-star hotel has risen up from the ruins of an old convent in Antigua, Guatemala. As we walked through its dramatic grounds visiting one evening, the ancient stone pillars, walls, and fountains gave us an almost other-worldly feeling. We were already rather awestruck when, as if on cue, a distant volcano erupted spectacularly, spewing red hot lava in a narrow stream down its side. Candles burned everywhere, and tiny white lights trailed beautifully through many of the trees on the grounds. It was just before Christmas, and hundreds of red and white poinsettias gracefully adorned walkways and corners. A beautiful, even magnificent place, set in amidst the considerable poverty of the majority of the populace. Since we had been working up in the mountains with people of extreme poverty, it was an experience of mixed emotion for us – appreciating the beauty and grandeur of the hotel on one hand, but still experiencing the heart-wrenching scenes that poverty forces upon those bound by it.

  • An opulent example of one of several benches circling a large planter in the main lobby of the Colonial Majestic Beach Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Repulblic February 2009. This shot taken in the daytime. / As we arrived at the resort in the evening to register for our rooms we were met by lovely girls with trays full of a wonderful drink called the Majestic (orange juice, coconut milk, grenadine, rum and crushed ice) served in champagne glasses, and we reclined on these benches and quenched our thirst, as we waited for our turn at the desk, while the porters took our bags and suitcases to our room. • Portland, OR

  • Lobby of the Lucient apartment building, Melbourne. HDR composition of 3 exposures (-1, 0, +1) in Photoshop CS3 with exposure and hue/saturation adjustments. This was done to allow for the broad tonal range created by the sun and reflections at the time of day the photograph was taken. Canon 40D / EF 17-40mm f4L / Auto bracketed exposures

  • This shot was taken in early January, as I walked through the lobby of the Perth Sheraton. We’d walked through the lobby quite a few times that weekend, but this sight just stopped me in my tracks. The mid-morning light must have been just at the right angle to produce this striking reflection. Yes, I had to look twice. What looks like a dark crucifix is simply the reflection of a wooden border as it is rendered across the polished flooring by the beautiful light. And it’s interesting to note that the reflection of a large painting in the background looks like a stained glass window. While the large sign saying “Origins” might not be out of place in a church, the “Exit” sign is another matter altogether. I can’t think of many hotel lobbies that look like churches – can you? I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/30 sec, ISO 800, focal length 108mm. Featured in LIGHT AND REFLECTIONS, July 2009. Featured in ALPHABET SOUP – R, July 2009. Featured in THE ART OF INTRIGUE, October 2009. Perth2009 – 4048

  • Meet my lovely & bright-eyed daughter Lacey! She is so very helpful in our lives in so many ways. She helps in the kitchen, with laundry, she is Mommy’s make-up artist & she even cuts my hair! She is every bit of 12 plus maturity! She’s feisty & still somehow a real sweetheart. I am so blessed to have her in my life! Everybody in our family is equally blessed just to know her, Miss Lacey! Smiles Leilani
