Koala was up a tree when a lizard looked up and saw him / ‘Hey what you doing?’ / ‘I’m getting high on leaves man!’ the koala dreamily replied / ‘Can I do that too?’ the lizard asked / ‘Sure get yourself up here and have a leaf or two ‘ / So the lizard climbed up the tree and started munching on leaves with the Koala. Soon he became really thirsty / ‘Oh man these leaves are sooooo cool but now I’m soooo thirsty!’ / ‘Yeah leaves’ll do that man but there’s a creek just down there go get a drink and come back’ / ‘Ok’ / So the lizard climbs down and staggers to the creek and promptly falls in! / A crocodile swims over and rescues him up out of the creek & onto the bank. / ‘Now what have you been up to mate?’ he asked the lizard / ‘Having Leaves with the Koala.’ / ‘Really? Is it fun?’ / ‘Oh man it’s ace!’ / ‘Ok I think I’ll go up and have some too.’ / ‘Yep! Cool! He’s over there!’ the lizard pointed and fell over! / So the crock went over and half climbed up Koala’s tree / ‘Hey Koala!’ / The Koala looked down and nearly fell out of his tree in surprise and cried / ‘MAN !! HOW MUCH YOU DRINK???!!!’ :o) / PS / For those who don’t know – apparently Koalas spend 80% of their awake time eating eucalyptus leaves that make them “Stoned” / [don’t quote me I’m no Biologist!] / lol :o)

  • Six Endangered Blue Iguanas Murdered
    by Shannon Plummer

    / / http://www.blueiguana.ky/news.htm:...

/ / http://www.blueiguana.ky/news.htm / / I personally am devastated by this news. I spoke about my recent trip to Grand Cayman at the MacHerps Annual Show. It was only October last year that I spent two weeks volunteering at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program and developed a close bond with Pedro and several other Blues. Pedro is confirmed dead since entrails were found outside his enclosure but his body is still missing. / / Here’s more info about it from the International Reptile Conservation Foundation – Blue Iguana Recovery Program’s partner. / / I encourage you all to visit this link and make a donation – anything you can spare and make sure you click the drop down menu to ‘Blue Iguana’ so the money goes there. They now have to spend money on security measures – that means less money for the iguanas to they need all the financial support they can get! Thanks guys. / / 100% profits from the sale of prints go to the Blue Iguana Recovery Program on Grand Cayman Island where I was fortunate enough to volunteer for two weeks last October. B.I.R.P. / / I should also point out that the two females killed were only weeks away from laying precious eggs – they too have been lost, a great blow to the conservation effort. However there is still hope with a few adult breeders remaining and juveniles awaiting release into the wild! / / http://ircf.org/news_bluesmurdered.php / / Currently over $11,000 Cayman Dollars has been offered as a reward for informational leading to arrests. / / Pedro / / / Pedro Eating a Noni Fruit / / / Me Patting Pedro - /

Just a bit of news on my end: I will be featuring some gecko artwork at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, USA from July 25 through September 7, 2009. The Gecko art show runs in conjunction with the Academy’s live gecko exhibit (see http://www.ansp.org/geckos/highlights.php). Opening night reception and sale is July 24, 5:30 to 7:30 PM. This art show came about when the Academy put out a call for local artists to take 12” “blank” resin gecko sculptures and decorate them in whatever manner they wanted. I painted my gecko gold and then embellished with paper and foil cutouts, which I then coated with some layers of Modge Podge (a type of sealer) to keep in place. Having not worked with any sculptures before, it was a bit of a challenge for me to work in 3D. I have some more ideas of what I would do differently if given another chance, but overall, I think the result is interesting. I call him “Golden Gecko”. Below are some photos:

Just got back from dropping off two artworks for a new juried art show in August. I was told the gallery is expecting over 300 entries for the show, so wish me luck in getting accepted. I’ll find out on Tuesday next week if I pass jury selection. I dropped off the following artworks for the show: Icon IV: The Fruit Bat Icon III: The Rabbit Also TONIGHT is the artist reception for “Art of the Gecko” at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA). The Academy is currently hosting a live gecko exhibit, and asked area artists to decorate a blank gecko sculpture for display at the museum. I will be showing “Golden Gecko”. In addition, I contacted the museum about showing some of my original artwork (as well as signed and matted archival art prints) in the museum gift shop. They agreed, and so the following artworks are now for sale at the shop: Conjoined: The Geckos This original gecko artwork (and well as the signed art prints) will be on sale through the end of the summer in conjunction with the current gecko exhibition. In addition, the Academy asked me to submit dinosaur and butterfly-themed works as they have ongoing (and popular) dinosaur and live butterfly exhibits at the museum. So I recently made the following, which are now also at the gift shop. I will be dropping off matted/signed art prints in August as well The Lizard King Butterfly I As always, check out my website at http://www.lynnetteshelley.com for the latest news and info.

Recently I ran a Reptiles of Australia Challenge and the entries were super duper, it really showed off some amazing Australian reptiles including one of my faves and yours it seems since there was 3 in the Top 4 was the Gecko! You can see the Forum Entry HERE / Part of the Reward was a Special promotion for the Winner and here it is and I am thrilled to do it too! Steve Bullock’s winning image was of the cuter than cute Rough Knob Tailed Gecko / I found some info on this delightful creature, this one covers the Centralian Knob Tailed Gecko.. Scientific Name: Nephrurus amyae Few reptiles have the same appeal as the knob-tailed gecko. The tiny tail ending in a little round knob about half the size of a pea, the large beautifully patterned eyes and the face displaying a permanent smile all contribute to the character of this little lizard. The centralian knob-tail is the largest of the group reaching a total length of over 15cm, of which the tail comprises no more than about 3cm. The general body colour is a reddish-brown to match the colour of the red sands of its home. This is overlaid with lighter bands and white dots. The latter are actually some of the tiny spines or tubercles that cover the body of this species giving it a rough appearance and texture. Did You Know? Nobody really knows the function of the tail knob. When examined closely the cells inside appear very different from any others in the body and they may have some type of sensory role. When hunting, the little gecko wriggles the knob from side to side when it spots prey as if it is excited about its next meal. Habitat: This knob-tail is restricted to the rocky plains of central Australia, sheltering during the day beneath boulders or in the disused burrows of other animals, emerging at night to forage on open ground. Diet: Insects, spiders and scorpions are the main diet but it does have a taste for other smaller geckos given the opportunity. Reproduction: The female knob-tail is distinctly larger then the male. To mate, he virtually has to climb on her back. The clutch of two eggs are laid about a month later and take a further 2-3 months before they hatch Info from Australian Reptile Park but I’m sure Steve could have told us all that considering he Hosts… / Animal Photography – Limit 1 Photo Submission a Week / Australian Wildlife / Pythons of the World / Reptiles / Varanids – Monitors of the World / Venomous Snakes of the World I think he knows his reptiles!! Some incredible works to be seen in these groups, check them out!! I was invited to participate in a terrific idea Steve has put together in his group Australian Wildlife which was a Book of Australian Wildlife, what a great idea that one is and full congratulations to him for offering this opportunity to his members!! Here is some more of his amazing Reptiles… / / / / / / Please check his profile out and see class photography in action… Steve Bullock Excellent work Steve, congratulations on winning our Challenge and a pleasure to be able to promote your marvellous work even more!! You are The Lizard King mate! Thanks, / Vanessa :O)

  • Don't Make Me Angry - Sold On Zazzle

Many many thanks to the c…

Many many thanks to the customer who has just purchaed 3 copies of Don’t Make Me Angry …. . at Zazzle. / Thankyou for your visit to my store! Series of 9 photographs taken 21 August 2009, Turkey. As usual, snap happy, Sony Cybershot. This lizard was lurking behind overgrown bouganvillea that was been hacked. The lizard literally hung around for a few hours – got a bit miffed when I got too close, but stayed long enough to have a reasonable photoshoot. / Possibly a tad over-enthuiastic but lizards generally move fast and previous attempts have resulted in no more than blur. I appreciate nature more now than ever and enjoy animals in their natural habitat. Courtesy Wikimedia here The family Chamaeleonidae are a distinctive and highly specialized clade of lizards. They are distinguished by their parrot-like zygodactylous feet, their separately mobile and stereoscopic eyes, their very long, highly modified, and rapidly extrudable tongues, their swaying gait, and the possession by many of a prehensile tail, crests or horns on their distinctively shaped heads, and the ability of some to change color. Uniquely adapted for climbing and visual hunting, the approximately 160 species of chameleon range from Africa, Madagascar, Spain and Portugal, across south Asia, to Sri Lanka, have been introduced to Hawaii and California, and are found in warm habitats that vary from rain forest to desert conditions. / / / My zazzle gallery has a premium range of gifts that are suitable for people of all ages and tastes: an eclectic collection of unusually imaginative, hip and sometimes beautiful designs. Not art-related, but the highlight of my day was seeing this lace monitor (aka tree goanna) laying her eggs in a termite mound. It took her two days to break open a hole and prepare the nest. The termites will close the hole and the eggs will be protected until, if all goes well, the mother returns in eight or nine months to break open another hole and let the kids out.
