Eastern Bearded Dragon (Pogona barbata) Taken at the Glenorie Wildlife Refuge Sydney, NSW, Australia.
A marine iguana suns itself after a foraging trip in the ocean. The only sea-going lizard in the world, these guys can dive to 12 metres for periods of 5 to 10 minutes. They can survive underwater for up to one hour, as a sailor on Darwin’s expedition discovered when he attempted to kill one by drowning. They also have the most effective salt-excreting gland of any reptile. The brightly coloured Sally lighfoot crabs at igi’s feet (also known as the Red lava Crab Grapsus grapsus) are very fast and very skittish. Their name comes from their habit of skipping across short stretches of water. / / The Galapagos islands are often called a “laboratory of evolution”. They are under increasing pressure from development, tourism, and local fishing, as well as international poaching of fisheries. / / 50% of any sales of this image will be donated to the Galapagos Conservation Trust (UK) / / Check out their position statement here

Legless lizards are always being misidentified as snakes, and as a consequence, they often get a shovel over the back of the head! The easiest way to tell is that legless lizards have external ear openings (the small hole behind their eye) and a lizard type pointy nose. This one is the Plain snake-lizard Delma inornata and is found across eastern Australia, particularly in grassland or woodland habitats. This one was found beneath a rock in box gum woodland near Tarcutta, NSW, AU. The total length of this animal was around 20cm and about as thick as your little finger! / / Click on “View Larger” for greater detail. The Painted Dragon Ctenophorus pictus is a small agamid found is arid shrublands and spinifex grasslands of southern inland Australia. It can generally be seen as it forages in semi-open areas where it emerges from a short burrow at the base of spinifex clumps or chenopod shrubs. This individual was photographed near Broken Hill in far-western NSW, AU. When I was on my way to Kata Tjuta I saw this small object on the road. As I got closer I saw this little “Devil” basking in the sun on the bitumen road. So I stopped and relocated him to a much safer location. I then grabbed the 1ds and took a couple of snaps. The best view was to get as low as possible. So here I am laying on the red dirt, spinifex digging into my back and camera in hand with these tourist buses flying by. I’m sure it was a funny sight to the international tourists but it would be no surprise to the bus driver who is probably thinking “Stupid photographer” site: www.mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com.

On my way out to the car today, I found this little fellow sunning himself on the hood. Lucky that I had my camera!
I photographed this wonderful bearded dragon at a Reptile show in Wollongong NSW today. He has such amazing texture and beautiful colour. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get too many details about this little fellow as I was trying to chase three of my grandchildren and a friend around the Centre as well as get some photographs. This was taken with my Canon 40 D SLR with the macro lens, whilst moving along a line and through a glass tank. Thanks for visiting
