I have always assumed that raccoons live just about everywhere. However, they are found in most of the United States except for parts of the Rocky Mountains, central Nevada, Utah and Arizona. They are also found in southern Canada and from Mexico to northern South America. Photographed at Juniper Springs Wilderness Preserve, located in the Ocala National Forest, Florida. They have one of the best canoe runs in Florida there for those who like it! Also from Juniper Springs Wilderness Preserve / /

This photograph was taken at “The Barn Owl Centre” . This was just the most amazing day spent with the owner, Vince, and his owls. I could recomend this to all my friends living in the UK. The web address is www.barnowl.co.uk The address is Netheridge Farm, Netheridge Close, Hempstead, Gloucester. An utterly amazing and hartwarming experience. Just for the record the owner is an experienced photographer and knows exactelly how to guide you and how to position his owls to be photographed. / Canon 400D / Lens: Sigma 70-200mm FEATURED IN: We Are Passionate About Birds of Prey / FEATURED IN: I Love Birds
Probably the most popular garden bird in the UK where they are often very tame – this contrasts to the rest of Europe where robins are more usually regarded a shy woodland bird.
Featured in Snow! Glorious Snow!! on September 14th, 2009. On a frigid winter day this bright red cardinal certainly stood out against the snow. Especially since he insisted on hanging around long enough for an entire photo shoot. He was hoping for some seed I guess. (and yes he was rewarded). This image was captured in Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Taken with a Canon Rebel XS. This image was in the top 10 in the “Red and White” Challenge in Canada…”The Great White North” , and as such was featured both in that group and briefly on the RedBubble frontpage on February 2, 2009. The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) or Redbird is a North American bird in the cardinal family. It is found from southern Canada through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico to northern Guatemala and Belize. It can also be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is found in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and swamps. The Northern Cardinal is a mid-sized songbird with a body length of 21–23 centimeters (8.3–9 in). It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face which is black in the male and gray in the female. It displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant red, while the female is a dull red-brown shade. The Northern Cardinal is mainly granivorous, but also feeds on insects and fruit. The male behaves territorially, marking out his territory with song. During courtship, the male feeds seed to the female beak-to-beak. A clutch of three to four eggs is laid, and two to four clutches are produced each year. It was once prized as a pet, but its sale as cage birds is now banned in the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

The Penguin Parade is located on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, only 140 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is part of Phillip Island Nature Park. The area is a reserve designed to protect and promote awareness of Little Penguins (previously called Fairy Penguins). The first night I was on Phillip Island I went to the Penguin Parade. Each night at sunset, the world’s smallest penguins, the Little Penguins, emerge from the sea and waddle ashore to their sand dune burrows with bellies full of the days catch. I was amazed at how far they travel from their burrows. The elevated boardwalks and viewing stands allow you to enjoy all the ‘penguin action’ without disturbing them or their burrow homes. / I stayed on the platform and watched them for two hours, getting soaked in rain storms and freezing winds…........was worth it !!! And yes it was Summer LOL / / BTW you are not permitted to take any photographic equipment into the boardwalk/ platform area. This shot however was taken at The Nobbies area on the side of a cliff. The penguins are a bluish colour and are so adorable, was hard to leave. / Jan 08

/ FEATURED IN THE GROUP: Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature / FEATURED IN THE GROUP: Butterflies, Skippers, Moths, & Other Winged Insects / WINNER IN A CHALLENGE IN THE GROUP: Focus and Lighting The common English name for this remarkable butterfly is glasswing, which in itself speaks volumes about the appearance of this small but unusual insect. However, it takes the romance languages to step in and give the butterfly the name which, for many, suits it best. The Spanish name for the glasswing is ‘espejitos’. Literally translated, this means ‘little mirrors’. Just a glance at the insect in question and one can imagine the thrill of pleasure when the moment of inspiration that came to its Hispanic name giver. If you want to see ‘little mirrors’ in the wild, however, you will have to take a trip – anywhere from Mexico to Panama in Central America will do the trick. Adults range from Mexico through Panama.G. oto visits common flowers like lantana, but prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum The red and purple striped caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females. / G. oto adults also exhibit a number of interesting behaviors, such as long migrations and lekking among males. / Camera: Canon 400D / Lens: Canon Macro 100mm / Location: Butterfly Farm Cape Town South Africa / /
Please view larger! Featured in Collective Collage – September 09 – Thank you very much to the hosts! Found this charming little creature in my garden, they frequent my yellowwood trees. I just love how her skin looks like a gorgeous pebble mosaic in miniature. She was about 10 cm head to tail and full of fiery attitude – suitable for a tiny dragon like this one. I reckon God has such fun with each chameleon he creates, placing their tiny jewel tiles in place on their perfect armour… Taken with my Canon 400D
I think that Carl Sandburg said it best about foggy days. FOG The fog comes / on little cat feet. It sits looking / over harbor and city / on silent haunches / and then moves on. Created from a sketch while in Waterbury, CT in Photoshop. I used my natural media brushes to create an impressionistic watercolor.
