  • On a wire
    by Ben Shaw

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I like the use of selected colouring on this because of the brown colour of the wire. The background of the old water tank sets up the scene perfectly, along with the Lithgow Valley Mountain range behind it.

  • Family: Phormiaceae / Distribution: Widespread in open forests, woodlands and heaths of eastern and south-eastern Australia. / Common Name: Tufted blue-lily / Derivation of Name: Thelionema… From Greek thelion, teat or nipple and nema, a thread, referring to the stamen filaments that are papillary hairy except at the tip and the base. / caespitosum…From Latin caespes, turf or sod and the suffix -osus, plenitude or notable development, referring to the tufted growth habit. / Conservation Status: Not considered to be at risk in the wild. General Description: / Thelionema is a small genus of three species comprising tufted perennial herbs with long, narrow leaves and lily-type flowers. All species occur only in Australia and they were previously considered to belong to the genus Stypandra. T.caespitosum (formerly Stypandra caespitosum) is a perennial herb with linear leaves 30-90 cm long by 2-12 mm wide. The plants spread by underground rhizomes and can form dense clumps. Flowers occur on branched stems that extend above the leaves and are usually deep blue with yellow anthers although white forms are known. The flowers are star-like, about 25 mm in diameter and flowering is from spring to mid summer. Apparently hybridization with the other two species occurs. This species has been in cultivation for many years and is hardy in a wide range of climates and reasonably well drained soils. It prefers a position in full sun or lightly shaded. If older, dead leaves look unattractive, these can be easily removed without harm to the plant. Propagation from seed is unreliable and better results are obtained by division of the grassy clumps, usually after flowering. This flower was shot in the Blue Mountains NSW. William Sandford established the blast furnace in 1886 and it continued production until 1928 when the entire industry was moved to Port Kembla. The site has now been developed as a park around the remains of the pump house and the foundations of the furnace In order to meet the obligations of his contract, Sandford built a new blast furnace with a capacity of 1,000 tons per week the funds for which were secured through a significant bank overdraft (Brown 1989, p.74). The bank was to shortly foreclose on Sandford’s loan, with the operations then passing to G & C Hoskins. After George and Cecil Hoskins took over the Steel Works in 1908 the business began to thrive. In an attempt to make the local steel industry more viable, the Hoskins Brothers persuaded the government to pay a bounty for Australian produced steel. The Hoskins Brothers moved their operations from Rhodes in Sydney to Lithgow and began to make significant advancements. Lithgow was to become renown for its steel production, with thousands of tons of steel being produced for the Trans-Australia Railway. In the first year of production, the Steel Works treated 51,000 tons of ore and employed 632 people (Lithgow Public School 1947). By 1926 the steel furnaces had turned out 178,000 tons of ore, resulting in 105,000 tons of pig iron (Lithgow Public School 1947). This particular friend is “Neville” the steam engine. Isn’t he a beauty! Note the pouring rain….nothing unusual for the Blue Mountains!!
