  • The Maori Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is a wrasse that is mainly found in coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. It is also known as the Humphead wrasse, Napoleon wrasse or Napoleonfish. Sadly the lips and eyes of these amazing fish are considered a highly prized delicacy in some parts of the world. In 1999 the lips alone of this fish were “worth $300 USD or more…..”: http://www.sheddaquarium.org/SEa/fact_sheets.cfm?id=77 Not surprisingly the high price has led to significant overfishing, resulting in their inclusion as Endangered on the “IUCN Red List”: http://www.iucnredlist.org/ The humphead wrasse is the largest living member of the family Labridae, with males reaching 6 feet (2 m) in length, while females rarely exceed about 3 feet (1 m). It has thick, fleshy lips and a hump that forms on its head above the eyes, becoming more prominent as the fish ages. Males range from a bright electric blue to green, a purplish blue, or a relatively dull blue/green. Some males grow very large, with one unconfirmed report of a Humphead Wrasse that was 7.75 feet (2.29 m) long and weighed 420 lbs (190.5 kg). (Source: wikipedia) “Napoleon’s lips push fish into WWF’s 10 most wanted species list”: http://www.wwf.org.uk/news/n_0000001338.asp The fearsome great-white shark and the Napoleon wrasse – a huge ugly fish whose lips are prized as a delicacy in Asia – top this year’s “WWF 10 Most Wanted” list of species most at risk from international trade. / The Napoleon wrasse, otherwise known as the humphead or Maori wrasse, is being so heavily over-fished for its lips and and eyes – which are eaten as a delicacy – as well as its flesh, that it faces being wiped-out in many areas if the trade is not controlled.

  • Francois’ Langur ~ Trachypithecus francoisi (Pousargues, 1898) IUCN Red List vulnerable species The Francois’ Langur or Francois’ Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus francoisi) is a species of lutung and the type species of its species group. The species is distributed from Southwestern China to northeastern Vietnam. Agile and cheeky, Francois’ Langur live in highland forests where they forage for a variety of food sources. Adult Francois’ langurs have a long, black, silky coat with a white band of cheek fur and can be distinguished from the other species in Primate Forest by the pointed crests of hair on their heads. Francois’ langur babies, in stark contrast, are Babies are born coloured a deep apricot. It is believed that the orange coloration protects the babies by helping them blend in with the foliage in the tree canopies of their natural habitat in Vietnam, southeast China and central Laos. Unfortunately, the remaining wild Francois’ langur populations are endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation, human encroachment and hunting. Richmond Bridge is a lasting symbol of Tasmania’s convict heritage. The sandstone arches of Australia’s oldest known large stone arch bridge have spanned Tasmania’s Coal River since its completion in 1825. The foundation stone for the Richmond Bridge was laid on 11th December 1823 and construction continued using convict labour until completion in 1825. In 2005, the bridge was recognised as an outstanding historic place and added to the Australian National Heritage List. Richmond, Tasmania, Australia. • The Ross Fountain in West Princes Street gardens with part of Edinburgh Castle (the Hospital block) in the background. Cast near Paris, France in the Durenne ironworks in the early 1860’s. It was an exhibit in the Great Exhibition in London in 1862 and was purchased for Edinburgh by Daniel Ross a local gun maker and philanthropist. After much deliberation as to what to do with it, it was finally assembled in West Princes Street Gardens in 1872. The gold coloured iron structure shows a standing naked woman at the top surrounded by four more seated naked nymphettes representing the arts, science, poetry and industry. Below the first tier are a collection of mermaids. The celebration of the naked female is typical of classical French design, but it wasn’t appreciated by everyone, Dean Ramsay (1793 – 1872) whose church, St. John’s was nearby called the fountain “grossly indecent and disgusting”. The Ross fountain is now a Category B listed structure of historic importance (HB Number 27911) under the care of Historic Scotland. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock. In recent years there have been concerns about rocks falling from the cliffs onto the gardens below, so the rather ugly netting has been draped on the rock face. Hopefully, over time, it will weather enough to be less noticeable. Princes Street Gardens at the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre were once a lake called Nor’ Loch. The Loch, which had been the trash dump of Edinburgh for centuries was drained in order to improve access from the New Town to the Old Town. Later, the Nor’ Loch was transformed into the beautiful Princes Street Gardens we see today. Complete ASCII list of symbols available using the alt + Number key pad on a computer. All of these symbols can be inserted in any text sentence or by themselves in text space by holding down the ( alt ) key – the one beside the space bar on a computer keyboard – and typing the number on the number pad on the right side of a computer keyboard. It does not work with the numbers across the top of the keyboard. Some of these will be useful to you and some are not. Why use a alt and number combination for the alphabet. Note: there are many more that can be found using four digit numbers, however many of them are repeats of those listed here. Note 2: If you really want to create passwords that are nearly impossible to break then use some of these symbols along with your normal passwords. Note 3: For those of you who do not have a number pad on your keyboard you can access many symbols by going to ( Start ) – where you go to find your list of programs on your computer. In the search box that shows up when you click (Start) – type character map . A window will open with all types of symbols and you can click on any one then click copy, then paste it to the location you wish to use. Note 4: For some operating systems you can find the Character map by going to ( Start ) then to (Programs) then to (Accessories). It will be listed as one of the program options under windows accessories and can be accessed the same way as described in Note 3 Note 5: If you do not have a number keyboard on your computer you can use the list below and copy and paste any symbol from this list. Just highlight the symbol you wish to use and then copy it. You might want to create your own library of symbols in a program like Notepad on your computer then save it to a file you can keep on your bottom tool bar for easy access. I would not suggest using MS Word since that program inserts hidden characters that RB can not read so your copy and paste will often not work if done from Word/ Have Fun!!!!!!!!! • Lt. General Wade’s Bridge at Aberfeldy in the Breadalbane region of Highland Perthshire (Breadalbane means “Highland Scotland” in Gaelic). Shot taken on Saturday 20th December 08 in the middle of our winter. Designed by William Adam, Scotland’s best architect. The total cost was £3,596 or, in today’s terms, over £1m. ”... a freestone bridge over the Tay, of five arches, nearly 400ft. in length, the middle arch 60 feet wide, the starlings of oak and the piers and landbreasts founded on piles shod with iron….” (House of Commons Journal, 7th February 1734). The bridge was first opened to traffic at the end of October 1733. Wade regarded it the greatest of his considerable achievements in road-making. In 9 years he had personally supervised the construction of over 250 miles of military roads in the Highlands – the first engineered roads in Britain since Roman times. lt is now the only one of Wade’s 35 major bridges to remain in use as a public highway. Built for 18th century wheeled carriages, it survives to the 21st century as a great memorial to a great roadbuilding engineer. Wade’s Bridge is a Category A listed structure of historic importance (HB Number 20861) under the care of Historic Scotland. The River Tay, Scotland longest river, meanders across Scotland from Loch Tay before flowing out to sea at the Firth of Tay. • A painting of a giant panda by Morgan Fitzsimons / watercolor on fabriano 8×11 Giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. They once lived in lowland areas, but farming, forest clearing, and other development now restrict giant pandas to the mountains. The giant panda is listed as endangered in the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN’s) Red List of Threatened Animals. There are about 1,600 left in the wild. More than 160 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world, mostly in China.
