  • The constant parade of swells breaking at Bells Beach always thrills a surfer when they arrive and see this view from the carpark. Although on this day, it was only for the ‘brave and daring’ as the surf was the result of a very severe storm the previous day and was very heavy and a bit messy.

  • “The mischievous Tokoloshe, a water sprite seen only by children, is a well-known and feared myth in Southern Africa. Villagers call upon the sangoma (witchdoctor) for assistance in banishing this evil spirit from their area. It is said that he is small of stature, can swallow a pebble to become invisible, and that he is disproportionately well-endowed. Women raise their beds on bricks in order to be safe from the attack of the Tokoloshe.” The Tokeloshe is South Africa’s version of the boogeyman. As a child I always imagined him to look more like this. Another reason for the regular skull drawings. I was scared the Tokoloshe would come take my sister away. But I was told that if you fought the Tokoloshe and won, he would teach you all his magic and you could be a Sangoma. Legend has it that attacks by the Tokoloshe can be thwarted by placing bricks under the corners of one’s bed, thus raising it to a height the small beast can’t reach. If you say “Tokoloshe” three times, he will come to get you or bite off your toes in your sleep. The tokoloshe is so well ingrained in South African Folklore, that even today, atrocities are commited in the name of the Tokoloshe and cultural consideration is given due to these circumstances. What was a cautionary tale as a child is today used a mythological scapegoat for horrid crimes. And some utter nonsense Also available in green fill

  • First of a set of two. A bit of a nod to Aubrey Beardsley thrown in. The curtain acts a link between the two images but is used differently by the characters. In ‘Restraint’ it is used as a form of security and protection and in ‘Abandon’ used to reveal and invite.
