Lindisfarne Priory / !Stone Mind Sanctions turned, about to burn / in endless criticism / a world of urges re converges / upon this endless schism / Of course we know which way the flow / we are the very best / At knowing when to seek the blend / and when to shout the rest We own it all from Lucifer’s fall / we know now where we live / Inside our heads the third one dead / that never now does give / A chance at life beyond this strife / a word we can discover / Initiate a blanked out state / with no chance to recover Always right my clearest sight / my ultimate confusion / I feel this truth so tis’ with youth / giving absolution / So in myself I live with wealth / a reality not my own / Always correct not circumspect / my mind is just a stone Ken Simm!
The volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, and sited on top of it is Lindisfarne Castle, one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England. The castle can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The castle is excellently maintained by the National Trust and the view from the top truly magnificent – it is also unique. BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: England. The castle is located in what was once the very volatile border area between England and Scotland. Not only did the English and Scots fight, but the area was frequently attacked by Vikings. The castle was built in 1550, around the time that Lindisfarne Priory went out of use, and stones from the priory were used as building material. It is very small by the usual standards, and was more of a fort. The castle sits on the highest point of the island, a whin stone hill called Beblowe. It can be located in Northumberland,on Holy Island. England.
This is a view of a pathway leading up to the door on the South side of Lindisfarne Castle. In the eighteenth century the castle was occupied briefly by Jacobite rebels, but was quickly recaptured by soldiers from Berwick who imprisoned the rebels; they dug their way out and hid for nine days close to nearby Bamburgh Castle before making good their escape.
Inspired by Joseph Turner. Lindisfarne Priory and Castle, In Northumberland, (near where I live), as a storm rolls in, from the ever-moody, North Sea! Watercolour on 90lb paper 12”x 8” I loved painting this, and will do a much larger one, in the future.
Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. / One of my ancestors was a mounted coastguard in the early 1800s and was based here. His gravestone is in the church which overlooks the castle.
Lindisfarne, usually known as Holy Island, is off the north east coast of England, shortly before reaching Berwick On Tweed. Celtic Christianity reached our country from Ireland via Iona and Lindisfarne. The Lindisfarne Gospels (similar to the Book of Kells) was written here. The Vikings invaded and slaughtered the monks, but some escaped with the Gospels and the remains of St. Cuthbert. They fled to Durham, stopping off at many places enroute, most of which ended up with a church named in honour of St. Cuthbert. Tomg mentioned the Beblowe Craig, a volcanic mound on which the castle stands. Here is Tom’s photo, taken from a different perspective and showing more of the actual castle. Wutz4tea, a new Redbubbler, mentioned liking Holy Island, so I am uploading this for her.
Tynemouth Priory was founded early in the 7th century. / In 800 the Danes plundered Tynemouth Priory. / Afterwards the monks strengthened the fortifications sufficiently to prevent / the Danes from succeeding when they attacked again in 832. / However, in 865 the church and monastery were destroyed by the Danes. / At the same time, the nuns of St Hilda, who had come there for safety, were massacred. The priory was again plundered by the Danes in 870. / / The priory was destroyed by the Danes in 875. / The small parish church of St Mary remained. / This Chapel is behind the Blue door. / When entering it is truly stepping back in time.

The island itself is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway. The shot was taken last week on a trip to Northumberland where I was treated to some beautiful scenery. / It’s a beautiful part of the country I can’t wait to revisit. (Hopefully the weather will be better next time!)I took the shot using a 9-stop ND filter to slow the shutter speed down to do away with the hoards of tourists heading up to the castle. Shot taken with Canon 400D 18-55mm lens / Aperture – f/14 / Shutter Speed – 10 seconds / ISO – 100 Featured In:- / Shameless self promotion
Another image of Lindisfarne Castle, again the lighting is by full moonlight with a single exposure of 477 seconds (Bulb setting with shutter release) at f/11.0 ISO 400, Sigma 12-24mm at 12mm. The distant lights to the left are Holy Island and the orange/pink glow on the horizon to the right are the distant lights of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
