Collaboration: First Tripod Out of the Pit

About a week ago Lloyd Harvey commented on my photograph Beyond the Trees, saying that it reminded him of one of the early scenes of H. G. Wells’ book The War of the Worlds. He then went on to express a desire to take the image and turn it into what he was seeing. Never having done any sort of collaboration before, and being a big fan of the book (I read it many times as a child and own quite a few copies), I was intrigued by the idea. So, a couple of BubbleMails later we had a plan. Lloyd delivered the result to me today: I think he’s done a great job (and I do like the idea of a tripod getting ready to take on Billingborough) and the bulk of the credit goes to Lloyd: I just took a photograph, he did a lot of work creating the tripod and then processing the final result. Have a look at his page for the image for details on how he created the work. And be sure to have a look at his website too.

Here in South Lincolnshire we’ve had pretty much no snow all winter. If it did snow (and I don’t recall any to speak of) it was a brief flurry and didn’t cover the ground. So, of course, now that it’s pretty much spring, we finally get some. Here’s what we woke up to find last Sunday morning.

Yesterday I took my cameras to the 141st Heckington Show. This is often said to be the biggest village show in the world (note the careful wording in the banner on their website). Along with the usual displays of livestock and the normal events you’d expect to see at a village show there was also a display by UK FMX — a motorcycle stunt team. It’s the first time I’ve ever tried to photograph anything like that so it was quite a challenge. As it is, I think I got a handful of reasonable shots. You can see the full set of photographs from the day over on my main site in the 141st Heckington Show gallery.

On Saturday I had an hour or so to kill before needing to be in Sleaford so I took a little drive around some of the back roads east of the town and ended up just outside Ewerby. I happened to have the EOS 400D with me and shot a very small set of images of the landscape just outside Ewerby Pylons are such a photographic cliché, but they’re also hard to resist. ;)

I try and carry a camera with me everywhere I go. Even when I’m doing something as mundane as popping into the local town (Grantham). Most times the camera never gets used, but at least I’ve got it there in case something catches my eye. One such “eye catching” moment happened this morning. It’s raining, I’m sat in the car waiting for my wife while she was in a shop, and I notice how cool a sign in a shop window looks as seen through the rain on the windscreen. So out comes the Canon PowerShot G9 and I have a little photography session, the result of which is this:

For some time now I’ve been meaning to update my Lincolnshire photography website so that images that are available on here are linked to from there. I’ve finally made a point of doing this: Prints of Lincolnshire. On each of those images there’s now a link to the purchase page for the work (see here for example). This means I’m now linked in from all of my sites (the other two being Photography by Dave Pearson and my general photography pages).

So I’m sat here working away and the Google Mail notifier I run on my machine pops up and I see it’s an email from RedBubble telling me that I’d mad another sale (it’s so nice to see this happen in “real time”—sad, but true). Another t-shirt sale, this time: / / This is kind of extra nice in that it means I’ve finally sold something on RedBubble that’s related to a photograph I’ve taken (the design is derived from this capture of a Lancaster). To whoever purchased it: I hope you like it and I hope it looks as good as I imagined it would.

I can tell that we’re well into spring now. I can finish work, do the things that need to be done once work is finished, and still have time to get out and about before the Sun has set. Yesterday evening I took a drive out with the Lomo Lubitel 166B with a view to finishing off the Fuji film I’ve currently got in it (the same film that has the shots of Normanton Church Museum). I only managed to get two shots off before the Sun set (I guess that’s what happens if you just take a drive and see what you can find — although I did manage to find a couple of locations that I might shoot at another time) but, at one location, I did take a shot of the Lubitel “in action”... Click for bigger version Well, I say “in action”, that was after I’d taken a shot. You can tell that by the fact that I’d put the lens cap back on and I totally forgot to remove it for this shot. D’oh!

Here in England we’re having a really nice run of fine weather at the moment. So, yesterday, given that it was hot and sunny, we decided to spend the day in the grounds of Belton House. I took the Canon PowerShot G9 and the Lomo Lubitel 166B with me. I managed to run off a small set of photographs with the G9 and also finished off a roll of Fuji Provia 100F in the Lubitel. I’ll be sending that off for processing some time today.

Just up the road from where I live is the village of Donington. The village’s main claim to fame, and one they’re pretty proud of, is that it’s the birthplace of Matthew Flinders. Recently there’s been a lot of work to turn a small field into a park that all the village can enjoy and, yesterday, an event was held there to mark the fact that it’s almost finished. Given that it’s just up the road, and that we’ve got relatives who live there, we decided to pop along and join in the fun. Of course, I took a camera with me.

Yesterday was Father’s Day and, as a little treat for me, I got taken out to somewhere while I could be let loose with my cameras: the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire. As luck would have it there was also a model aircraft flying display on too so there was more to photograph than just the centre itself (which, if you’re in travelling distance, is worth a visit alone — especially if it’s a weekend when Just Jane is doing one of her taxi runs. The weather was a bit mixed, with plenty of stormy-looking clouds hanging around, but that’s often a good thing as it means the sky looks far more interesting than if it had been clear blue. It was a great day out and you can see the final album of photographs over here. And, to top it all off, I also got a copy of Martin Parr’s Think of England as well as a book about Martin Parr (which includes a wide selection of his work). I also got a copy of A Pig With Six Legs from The Cloud Appreciation Society. :D

Today, as seen from the UK, we had a partial solar eclipse (it was a total eclipse for parts of Canada, Greenland, Russia and China). The weather wasn’t brilliant, I was fighting cloud and wind all the way, but I managed to watch most of it via my Solarscope and with the naked eye (using eclipse shades, of course — you should never look directly at the Sun). You can read my log of the observing session over here. There’s also a handful of photographs in there too — nothing special, just quick captures of the view as I saw it through my Solarscope.

Yesterday evening, just before sunset, I went for a short walk around Billingborough with my Canon EOS 400D. Even though it was only around 15:30 in the afternoon the sun wasn’t far off setting. Despite the low lighting I managed to get a handful of pictures out of the walk: / Fallen Fence / But Look Around / Sunrise Elsewhere / Looking Towards the Night / Draw the Line Here See here for the full set.

Yesterday was the first day of really nice warm and sunny weather we’ve had since, well, since forever (okay, slight exaggeration, but only a week earlier we had snow on the ground). So, given that the forecast looked pretty good for the whole day we decided to ignore all the stuff that needed doing around the house and, instead, we took a drive up into the Lincolnshire Wolds. Of course, I took a camera or two (I took the Canon EOS 400D and the Lomo Lubitel 166B — I got through ½ a film with the latter so no images from that just yet). I ended up taking a handful of images in Horncastle and later on in the afternoon, after we’d had some lunch, we ended up near the village of Fulletby. It was a pretty nice day out and it convinced me that I really need to get up to the Wolds more often.

Last Saturday I took my new Canon PowerShot G9 out for its first “proper” outing. We were going shopping in Stamford so it seemed like the perfect chance to try shooting out on the streets. I’m quite pleased with the results. Being small and fast to start up it’s perfect for having close to hand (or, in this case, hanging around my neck) for when you see a shot that’s worth grabbing. More than once I found myself faced with a shot I just “had” to “have” and the G9 was there and ready without any messing about. If I’d had the EOS 400D with me instead I’d have probably missed the shots (because, given that it’s big and bulky in comparison, I tend to keep it in its case when I’m not actually taking a picture).

Over-Processing can be fun

Most of my photography, at least the images that don’t get turned into black and white images, end up going on my website more or less as-is. Sure, like most people, I dabble with the curves and sharpen things up a little, that sort of thing; but mostly they remain looking more or less true to what was originally shot. Not that I’m opposed to lots of post-processing, far from it. Sometimes the results can end up looking very attractive. I think the following might be a case in point (it works for me anyway): As I type this my friend Tim is scanning the latest film from my Lubitel 166B. He threw a jpeg of the first scan over to me to have a look at (and it looks nice) and I had a quick mess around with it in Photoshop Elements. Not a deliberate attempt to produce something, just an idle play. And this is what happened: And I quite liked it. While I wouldn’t actually go with the above as the finished product of that shot (it looks nothing like the original and is horribly over-processed), I liked it enough that it was worth a quick upload. Once I’ve got the scanned tiff file I might even work on a version like this. The shadow behind the cloud is a really nice detail. I hadn’t even noticed that before I over-processed it.

I’ve finally uploaded the results of the first roll of Fuji Provia 100F that I’ve put through the Lubitel 166B. Overall I’m pleased with the results. Out of the 12 images on the roll only 2 didn’t turn out as I’d hoped (and both were down to a metering cock-up on my part, both images show a scene, they just don’t show the scene how I wanted it to appear). The uploaded images are: Lubitel at Fulletby / / Normanton Church Museum Spring Clouds Towards Threekingham Storm Near Stow

This last weekend I managed to get a fair bit of photography done. On Saturday I headed over to Spalding and took some photographs while watching the Spalding Flower Parade. Getting a good position to actually see the parade itself, let alone photograph it, was tricky. As it was I ended up generally photographing everything that was going on around me. On Sunday I headed down to Flag Fen to see (and photograph) their Romans vs Saxons themed weekend. That was a fantastic day out. The stalls, displays and talks were interesting enough but the show battle towards the end of the day was excellent. If you ever get the chance to get to Flag Fen for such an event, do so, well worth the money.

Having had enjoyable results with my first roll I decided to put a second roll of Fuji Provia 100F through the Lubitel 166B. I finished the roll off the other weekend, while at Belton House, and last Monday I posted it for processing and scanning by my friendly Scottish landscape photographer (thanks Tim!). I got the results back on Saturday and have processed them all over the weekend. The results are as follows: Mareham Lane Rapeseed Lone Pylon Repetition Lubitel at Belton House / / / / I did suffer some light leakage this time around, especially on the first three frames. The second frame (Lone Pylon) suffered the most, hence the reason I turned it into black and white. Other than that I’m very pleased with the results. As it turns out, I was so happy with the way that Lone Pylon turned out I’ve made it available as a print (as part of my series Against the Sky):

Last weekend was the 2008 RAF Waddington air show and, as we’ve always done ever since we moved to Lincolnshire, we went along on the Saturday. The forecast was awful. Mostly rain but with the chance of it clearing up a little in the afternoon. This would normally be disappointing anyway but it was worse given that this show was going to be the return to the skies of the privately rebuilt Avro Vulcan XH558. As forecast, the morning was wet and horrible and hardly anything was flying (although the Red Arrows managed to put on a small display despite the fact that the cloud was very low). Thankfully the forecast chance of better weather in the afternoon did happen and we ended up with a nice sunny day. And, as promised, XH558 took to the skies for her first ever public display: You can see the full set of photographs over on my main site. I also recorded some short videos on my PowerShot G9. You can find them over on my YouTube page. It’s the first time I’ve tried that and I’m very pleased with the result. The YouTube mangling doesn’t do them justice.

Yesterday I took a drive down to Bourne to have a wander around, and photograph, the Bourne Family Fun Day. The event was held at the recreation ground in Bourne and was held in aid of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and another charity whose name escapes me at the moment. The highlight of the day had to be watching an Elvis impersonator performing a cover version of Nirvana’s Come As You Are. Life doesn’t get much odder than that. ;-) You can see the full set of photographs over here.
