  • I love hornets, I don’t like being around them but I’ve always thought that there are much worse jobs if you have to be reincarnated as an insect. / Nobody messes with a hornet. I was thinking of the Book of Kells when I got the idea for this. I worked for about a month burying small details in it so it’d be a decent conversation piece. 100% from scratch in 3DsMax and PS Add theyellowfury to your watchlist / Image copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. • This one’s straight out of the sketchbook so its a bit rough and there are drawings on drawings. I really wanted to show it off though. I believe its conceptual virtue will see it through. / Here’s the idea: / I first got limited access to my subconscious leading from an agreement with my mind that it’d let me in to try to fix it. We were having a few problems, my mind and I. / What it didn’t tell me was I wouldn’t be allowed to remember very much of what I’d seen there. There was no arguing, I was very lucky to get the access I did. Any time I’d dream or have lucid waking half dreams I could go there. My anonymous handler gave me a computer in a nice enough room to work in and I asked to be left alone. / After a while I used some other bits and pieces to construct a device that could project an image of what I could see on the workstation onto the wall. It still needed to be patched into the main securtity network to make it “live,” I never had any problems there though and I’m still not sure how I got away with it. I reckon I was the beneficiary of the good nature of some member of the security staff who saw what I was trying to do and disregarded his or her orders for the greater good. / I hid a large sheet of paper on my person on the way in one night and was able to draw over the projection and secrete the paper and have my escape with the precious data which I was then able to make into art. This then is one of the places I get my art from. / My mind wasn’t too impressed when it found I’d been at the restricted media but but I told it to remember who was in charge and to shut up or I’d stick a pencil in it. • This was a great day. / I had collected a lot of information and proceeded to sign a treaty with my mind allowing me access to the resources of the wasps. / Wasps do all the maintenance and construction work in my mind and they can be called on to deal with any nasty threats that encroach on my beloved machine. They’re a powerful workforce and I had been granted the use of them, after submitting my designs for careful scrutineering. / First we had to build a giant deck so we weren’t working where the problems were. Then a big Science and Technology building went up. Its the one with the flag showing a microscope. (I had a microscope when I was a kid.) / All that was needed then was someplace for the wasps to go on break, a few admin buildings and a giant dredger with which to haul up bits of mind. These could then be processed and healed in the S&T wing and put back. / Things are well underway here and the success of the project was off the scale I had set for it. • I’d rather not explain this one. Its a bit personal. Finally uploaded after working on it all night. Its now 7:35. Linaji wrote this lovely piece inspired by it / Bending my will to crawl within / My own nature will not allow / For the regiment of poles and holes / And I breathe better under the sea / I know better above. / Quiet and killer instincts / Observing more the me in me / The me below speaks / The me above seeks / Witness to our constant desires / Witness to our holding back / I can do nothing / But highlight the way / Coming? / linaji 2009 inspired by: The Yellow Fury’s Exile… xoxoxo Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. • I had to retouch this , it was annoying me. And I had to submit it fresh because I had been waiting half an hour and the new image hadn’t uploaded yet. / Apologies to all who commented on the earlier one. / I can do any letter or word anyone wants by request. • I can do hair now. / I was doing this all week. My pesky job kept me away from it for long periods. But one sleep deprived headachey weekend sorted it out. I don’t know what time of day it is now. I tried a coloured one. I’ll try again. / See the reprise here Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. • Or The man who had a creative block all week and got rid of it on Friday night. / I was supposed to do something about breakups for my friend’s new album. / This oughta sort that. I tried as best I could to recreate those crappy plastic chairs we had in school, because they’re vile. / I was going for a Space Invaders idea first of all but hadn’t thought of what to do for the Invader family. I wanted to show the erosion of someone. This concept blossomed along the way. Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. • My explanation. / I tailored this to someone using a few details about her as the different elements. / Her name begins with L and she works as a builder. / I needed a straightedge to do the hacksaw blade. To neglect the absolutely straight line would have been unacceptable. / A hacksaw blade fitted the bill quite nicely, I don’t have a ruler. Might be an idea to get one. / I like things to look as real as possible so I looked on the net at hacksaw blades and found a lovely orange one with the words Bi-Metal on it. / I decided that’d work. The Times A was such a nightmare I had to find a suitable replacement. / The flower was going to make a pentagram but once I started doing the petals transparent I had to drop the idea and devote that patch solely to the flower. / I went a bit Vista on it. • The Champion Moth is actually a butterfly. It’s a common misconception even among lepidopterists who can often be found lepidopting away in ignorance of this very pertinent fact. I started with the idea of opaque butterfly wings. Then I saw a pattern emerging in my work, a bad thing. And I should where it’s convenient always take things one step further with every project, so I had a vacancy for something new. It was then a case of figuring out what is the opposite of what one would expect. I was reading about how sparkplugs work and it was interesting stuff. Why they are the shape they are etc. Very interesting to me anyway. And butterflies could be shaped like sparkplugs with wings, that was credible enough for me. Then there was some minor photoshopping just to bring out the colours that were in the scan already. I don’t know how they get in there but I’m happy enough to use them because they’re an analog effect. I’d like to thank my always-obliging hacksaw blade who did a fantastic job teaming up with a piece of string to make a curved ruler sort of thing. When I was coming to the end of the drawing phase I was reminded of one of my favourite quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams: / It was a large mattress, and probably one of quite high quality. Very few things actually get manufactured these days, because in an infinitely large Universe such as, for instance, the one in which we live, most things one could possibly imagine, and a lot of things one would rather not, grow somewhere. A forest was discovered recently in which most of the trees grew ratchet screwdrivers as fruit. The life cycle of ratchet screwdriver fruit it quite interesting. Once picked it needs a dark dusty drawer in which it can lie undisturbed for years. Then one night it suddenly hatches, discards its outer skin which crumbles into dust, and emerges as a totally unidentifiable little metal object with flanges at both ends and a sort of ridge and a sort of hole for a screw. This, when found, will get thrown away. No one knows what it is supposed to gain from this. Nature, in her infinite wisdom, is presumably working on it. / No one really knows what mattresses are meant to gain from their lives either. They are large, friendly, pocket-sprung creatures which live quiet private lives in the marshes of Squornshellous Zeta. Many of them get caught, slaughtered, dried out, shipped out and slept on. None of them seem to mind and all of them are called Zem. Bearpaw (a very nice person) wrote this incredible bit about it. / The moth/butterfly represents evolving, the spark plug represents not letting the spark within die, the flower represents a persons’ sense of fragility/purity. / Thanks Bearpaw. • I rushed the last one to get it done on time, this one is a lot more to my liking. The prayer reads: / Seamos fuertes con la verdad. Podemos saber amor y nunca saber hambre. Podemos vivir bien en nuestras convicciones y nunca saber un dia de violencia o sufrimiento. Que todas nuestras acciones de gratitude y ofricimiento sean para un mundo mejor. May we stand strong in truth. May we know love and never know hunger. May we live well in our convictions and never know a day of violence or suffering. May our every gesture show our gratitude and be our offering for a better world. _______ Amazonistas are an amazing group of people who are truly doing good work. / There’s tons more info here: amazonistas.org / contact@amazonistas.org If anyone wants to buy a really big image be sure to contact me, this is only 3200 pixels across but the original is about 7000×5000. • This is literally a year’s work. They’re not totally in chronological order. • Or Fuckit, I’ll just scan it Six weeks I was at this one in between being really busy or not in the humour to do it. Loads of mistakes are buried in there from times when I went at it but shouldn’t have. It got pretty mucky for a finish. There are heaps of symbols in it and its a continuation of one of my earlier works / I’m glad I finished (or near finished) it and I can finally move on to something else. / The name is but a ploy to appeal to arty farty types. / But it is really about a revelation, to be truthful. • Lets hear it for bass. / The most important and overlooked part of rock bands if they want to stand out from the crowd. Bass has only come into its own in the last 20 years or so with the electronic revolution. There is no analog instrument anywhere that can achieve bass as clean and booming as Elektrobank by The Chemical Bros. / I first noticed bass when I was young, pre-ten. I’m not really sure, but I was upstairs in the family home and knew what song was on the radio downstairs on a big old guffer of a Philips HiFi system but it was different to the song I was used to hearing downstairs. It was the bass getting through the floor without the melody. So I was aware of it. It was much later in life that I developed my taste for it though. The title is kinda what I’ve done here. I work at it like etching but build up shapes instead of cut them away. I started with just the bass clef and added everything else in as I went along. I wanted a whooshy kind of buzz and took care that things are where applicable as close to perfect circles as I can draw and that the curves continue through the different elements. Its mostly freehand but I needed a small bit of help from the top off a can of WD-40 to get the two dots right. The oil lamp is to balance out the bottom right and because oil lamps are cool. • I haven’t bothered to scan this one, a photo’s way easier and since nobody’s gonna buy it anyway I don’t care. Have you priced an A3 scanner lately? The original’s on 14”x10” smooth paper and I used a 0.5mm 2B and a 0.3mm HB automatic pencils. This has a mild bit of PS to bring out the colours that came from me having my finger over the flash and no retouching whatsoever. Its a pity the top left is illuminated a bit too much but I still don’t care. / Its a 10megapixel image. This is about different levels of consciousness. To begin with this is all inside the mind, all imaginary so we’re already at one level of metaphysics. My subconscious is mostly out of bounds to me. Its represented here by the landscape. I often go there in dreams or whatever but can rarely remember anything that happened when I come back. / My immediate conscious is where I can go anytime I want and while I’m in there I can comtemplate, plan ways to think and construct concepts and regularly create models of problems I need to solve out here in the real world, connect them up to the mains and see if they work, or find out the probability of them working. / I only barely notice this process visually in pictures at the back of my mind and there are no words that can accurately describe it. Not yet anyway. / In addition to constructing problem models myself the problem plumbing can grow by itself, most of the time caused by bullshit from this world out here. This is called a neurosis. Neuroses can go unnoticed if the person who owns the brain isn’t careful, often manifesting itself as making him think things that aren’t true and thinking regressively or negatively. And if the person is that way inclined, being a dick. / Here, one of these has burst through the ceiling of the room it was in into the next level of consciousness and has encroached into my subconscious. This in time can affect the next level again, the soul. / The concept I’m trying to illustrate would be something like seeing wires and circuit boards on your monitor instead of software / —-—-——- / 2 days later and I have thought of a better way to think of this, lets say the flora represents my emotion, my passion and creativity and the mechanical stuff is the problems of daily life, job, money etc. Simple. • I’m doing up some images for some big wall art and had a bit of fun with this design I uploaded about a month ago What I’d look like with the front of my head missing if the laws of physics were tweaked just a little Or a metaphysical view of the practice of making oneself very very small in order to go into the mind to listen and talk to all the little voices in there. As you can see I have constructed powerful monitoring equipment to hear even the smallest voices. / I started it before xmas. / You can see me there right in the middle atop a platform in the best acoustic spot. • I’ve been at this a long time and I’m so happy to have it completed. I have explanations for everything but I decided I’d let you folks artistically interpret it for a while. What do you reckon? 100% Hand drawn in HB and 2B And here are some of the interpretations The sun is an expression of your full creative potential – the fully-realised self – the upper tree to me looks like a representation of the brain, with it’s left and right hemispheres joined in the middle, and connected to the trunk (spinal column) of the ‘self’ – reaching into the collective unconcious of the earth, and your heart, your core emotional self, at the point where they merge. / -Mistertrooth Then it comes out the “interpretation” from a symbolism, that is really inherent to the piece. / The Tree…the Being. / Sound, Straight, Exuberant, / sort of a tight pressed Being, against the background. / Even you have created a perfect space softened by a blurring mist and two distant objects. For me…it is a bit suffocating. / The Sun…whimsical character here….like a woman dressed as man, doing a strip-tease show. The Idea… metaphorical, is that feeling inside , of the Cosmic Father containing much of the feminine and that once in a while is stripped of his boastful manner of doing things, and trying to reach to the cool earth..It seems that is not the tree the one needed of the feeding , nurturing sun, but the sun needed of the fresh branching of the tree. To the point of letting his rays be falling like coquette petals of a sunflower. Calling thus, his attention. / Spliting brain…not splitting at all. Just a harmonic consciousness of the brain division…very important in all the work. From there is the creativity of the artistic expression. Intellect is not dueling between the two sides, but profiting of their differences. / The Action. Queer. The Essence’s action is coming from two points. To the right (which is your left really) Yang drive. The rigid and ancestral organization of a hive. The reason well administered, managed. They bees, thoughts, seem to be there free going. False. They work in a perfect machine organization. Nothing is out of the system. / Left. The symbolism of the intuition, feminine, lunar, side. The hamster is trapped. In a sort of Wheel of Fortune, The feminine, lunar side is trying to advance to the future, but is dominated by inertia. And a humble bee is encouraging his coming out. She is a dissident….dissidence of our own thoughts and reasoning, sometimes is a great punch to our ego-centered jail of the intellect. / And at last!!! / The clockwork heart!. An extraordinary piece of art, that believe me is the most melodramatic, or theatrical object of all the piece. It is a fake. Yes.. is it a protection.. an icon of your tender emotional sensibility. You prefer to show yourself like a methodic and sort of mechanical emotional being… in order to protect your demands. I this way the souls that may reach you, will not beleive that you are let’s say, Easily captured? / -Rosa Cobos And what I was thinking myself, well basically like a lot of my work its a self portrait. Particularly my brain and heart. I never draw a brain without eyeballs for two reasons. They’re technically part of the brain and I think they’re cool. / The hornets’ nest represents the rational multitasking side and the hamster represents my single minded creative side. / I really wanted to draw a real looking human heart but decided it’d be too hard to get right. A clockwork one was the second option. I butchered an old printer to get some cogs to draw around as there was no way I was going to draw cogs freehand and get them to look right. I wasn’t about to get into pitch circle diameters (pain in the arse) and stuff / I have incorporated human style heart valves into this design. / The objects in the background are symbols of my past and will remain unnamed. / Its from a drawing I did in an old notebook round the 2002 mark. I spent as much time erasing as I did laying stuff down to keep the white clean. You have to mind your tonal range when you’re working with pencil. I think that’s it more or less.
