  • / “The Last Tulips” is part of the Series “Flowers“ All my Tulips are gone now…bulbs safely wrapped in their cocoons in the dark, ready for next fall…in my neighbour’s garden, their are a few survivors of the late spring…let’s celebrate their late arrival….the summer has hardly started, so these vibrant tributes to spring are doubly welcome....Janis Watercolour on textured Arches Paper… Spring passes and one remembers one’s innocence / Summer passes and one remembers one’s exuberance / Autumn passes and one remembers one’s reverence / Winter passes and one remembers one’s perseverance ..Yoko Ono, / /

/ Shadows hold their breath ...excerpt-Emily Dickenson /

  • / “The Bird of Paprdise” is part of the Tropics Collection...Watercolour on Fabriano Artistico Paper…see more below.. Softly stroked by the mid day wind / near violently shaken with night gusts / moistened by showers and ripened by light / stroked by sun beams and kissed by the moon. D Rosenburg / / / / / /

  • / “The Darkest Evening of the Year” is a semi-abstract landscape, that is part of the Winter Collection... the darkest evening will be this coming Sunday, the 21st of December, then the days start getting longer little by little..I could not resist adding some moonlight though. Watercolour on Fabriano Artistico Paper… Whose woods these are I think I know. / His house is in the village, though; / He will not see me stopping here / To watch his woods fill up with snow. / My little horse must think it queer / To stop without a farmhouse near / Between the woods and frozen lake / The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake / To ask if there’s some mistake. / The only other sound’s the sweep / Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, / But I have promises to keep, / And miles to go before I sleep, / And miles to go before I sleep. R. Frost / /

  • “UNcertain Weather” is part of the Abstract, (see others below) Winter, and Trees Collections..Watercolour on Arches Paper…the poem tells the whole story… 257 Views Insulated emotions render / the discussion of the current crisis / nothing more than / small talk about the weather. The winds long ago whipped / the leaves from this tree / leaving tattered limbs / silhouetted against / a twisted sky. Grays, blues, whites / flashes of light and / an exaggerated startle to / the sounds of life. The crackle of / leaves under feet / causes fright when / the footsteps belong to / prospective lovers of night. Dark eyes pierce blue, / spotlights shining into / an eternal shadow that / warps light, shapes / days of confusion. Questioning the velocity of / the wind at night / and average rainfall amounts, / as reported by / an interested observer, / is skewed. There is no objectivity when / distorted hours / tick away into seasons / obscured by a stormy past and / threatening weather. The bark toughens, / hardened soil holds upright / the leafless tree, / she bears no fruit, / stands alone, / roots unseen. Hours and seasons become / irrelevant in a climate where / variations in temperature / cannot affect / the unexposed life. A smile on a sunny day, / a shield against oneself, / concealed realities, / a guarded defense in / uncertain weather. Stability captured in / truth imprisoned by / decaying leaves, / a tell-tale sign of / hostile storms and / approaching winter. There, in a heap, / at the end of the alley / the leaves have gathered, / a favorite hiding place / for a blue-eyed child / who quietly wonders / if anyone will ever / come with a rake / and disturb her / fragile peace. B.R. Duquette… / / / / / / /

  • / “*Piper Nigrum” is part of the Tropics Collection...Watercolour on Fabriano Paper…see others below.. Pungent and aromatic, piper nigrum (black pepper) has been grown in Southern India for more than two thousand years… The fruit, here shown growning on the vine, and known as a peppercorn when dried, is a small drupe five millimetres in diameter, dark red when fully mature, containing a single seed. / Along with other spices, it changed the course of world history, leading to the European efforts to find a sea route to India and consequently colonial occupation of that country, as well as the discovery and colonization of the Americas. Pepper was so valuable that it was often used as collateral or even currency. / Dried ground pepper is one of the most common spices in European cuisine, having been known and prized since antiquity for both its flavour and its use as a medicine. The spiciness of black pepper is due to the chemical piperine. Ground black peppercorn, usually referred to simply as “pepper”, may be found on nearly every dinner table in many parts of the world. • / “Evergreen” is part of the Winter collection...Watercolour on Fabriano Paper…see samples below… / It stands alone in authenticity / The seasons don’t affect the Christmas tree / Perhaps the reason chosen for its role / Unchangeable is living from your soul. / Forever green no matter that the cold / Makes screaming from surrounding colors bold / The grand display of pride before a fall / Which lets us see this one tree standing tall. / The only tree we take into our homes / To celebrate with singing and with poems / A love that like this tree will hold its ground / With constancy like none we’ve ever found. / A beauty that withstands the time of death, / And makes the wind of God a scented breath / Though only green it knows no cause for shame, / For true things are the ones that stay the same. ...John H. Bidwell / / /

  • / “Time to Start Anew” is part of the series “The Trees”...here we are, still in winter, but as we draw towards the end of the year it is a time to stop and access the old…time to look back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. As artists, it’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make in our work, and resolve to follow through on those changes…. like fresh growth in spring, it’s time to start anew ...Watercolour on Arches Not Paper…click on the image below to see others in the collection… Life has it’s beginnings / Coming at intervals, / Time to start anew. / None is first or last, / Save birth and death, / Nor can we decide / Which is most significant, / Transforming, or long enduring. / It only matters that / Each beginning, like Spring, / Be given it’s due, / To nourish the earth, / for flowers, / To respect sun and rain / for fertility, / Not to trample feeble life, / our own or another’s, / Before it’s strong enough / To bend in the wind ... J. Kavanaugh /

Mixed Media and Watercolour on layers of plaster with etched letters, on Waterford Rough Paper… / / 1328 Views / / FEATURED IN IMPRESSIONIST ART AND OTHER GROUPS Maria Medeiros very kindly offered her photos to me and I have chosen her Vintage Berries (see photo) as the source for this painting, done in a heavily textured style…if you look closely, you will be able to recognize words and sayings about art and life etched into the plaster…I wanted the work to look aged and worn, but the Berries I made fresher looking so as to stand out against the antique background ...a few samples of the collection are shown below…click on each image to view the enlarged version…. / / /

  • / “Jonagold 3 is part of the Portfolio Collection, which has three websites devoted to it alone...acrylic on canvas… the following is an excerpt from my Blog “The Journey”, which describes the process of creating this collection…a few samples are shown below…click on each to see the original page… Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind, as a steady purpose….a point on which the soul may fix it’s intellectual eye”.....Mary Shelley. Since the first of this series “Still Life with Mandarins”, emerged,  I have been deliberately making the symbolic backgrounds of seasons, land, sea, sky, man, his work, etc. etc. more and more stylized….the subject matter however, I want to keep very real.  I like the fruit to look ripe and juicy, as if you could pull it right off the canvas ...... In this way I can escape falling into the trap of the painter as moralist. I still want the work to be decorative….the kind of thing I would want to, and indeed have, hanging in my own home. ....what’s more I would like to involve the viewer in a dialogue with the work ..... No two paintings are alike and I will make sure that they never will be. One thing they do have in common, is the very dark ebb and flow, that swirls around the subject area of the painting…..and again this will be different with each painting .... Laurie Lee’s lyrical words, speak to all of my work during these last few months. Behold the apples’ rounded worlds:
juice-green of July rain,
the black polestar of flowers, the rind
mapped with its crimson stain. / The russet, crab and cottage, red
burn to the sun’s hot brass,
then drop like sweat from every branch
and bubble in the grass. / They lie as wanton as they fall,
and where they fall and break,
the waltzing wasp consumes his share,
the bent worm enters in. / / / / /
