While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats / Mark Twain I don’t know how many girls you dated, man / But you ain’t lived ‘til you’ve had your tires rotated / By a redheaded woman / It takes a redheaded woman / To get a dirty job done Bruce Springsteen During the Spanish Inquisition flame colored hair was evidence that its owner had stolen the fire of hell and had to be burned as a witch Bees are thought to sting redheads more than others Redhaired people never can make good butter. The butter always has a slight tang about it / British superstition The red-haired of both sexes are more libidinous and mischievous than the rest / Jonathan Swift in “Gulliver’s Travels” If you pass a redhead in the street you are to spit and turn around / Corsican superstition There was never a saint with red hair / Russian proverb Only two things are necessary to keep a redhead happy. One is to let her think she is having her own way, and the other is to let her have it / Unknown
Lilith still reigns as a symbol of independent, life-loving, justice-seeking women who have been depicted in art, history and literature as sexual predators, demons, evil spirits and harlots. She may have been considered both warrior and seductress; I view neither of these as negatives. If she is shown as one who tricked men, I believe it was to teach them lessons; if she was blamed for inciting their lust, so have all women taken the blame for male desire in a world where sexuality is held sinful. / If we are to believe she kills mortals, can we not view her as we do the male god, as one who ‘giveth and taketh away’, who ends human life as He, divine ruler, deems necessary, or simply to maintain the balance of the Universe? Why do the qualities we admire in a male god make so little sense to us when embodied by a female deity that we demonize her? Why are they so threatening? We’re every woman… / It’s all in us…
She had lost the imperative / to wish for traditional love, / with all its accoutrements – / marriage, children, / a leaky roof above / She had passed through / the chemical burn / of failed romance / and was now scarred, / disfigured, / too crippled to dance – / or so She said / But He could see / through the lie / And His eyes / as they traversed Her body / saw the way in / saw the tiny, minute scars / just under the skin / She was like an ancient canvas / of marble / Her milky surface / smooth and impeccable / with blue veins / and raised flesh / just visible / under the surface / He traced the veins / With firm fingertips / Licked the scars / Followed with a kiss / which carried with it / tragedy and entropy / birth and death / and as He entered Her / with a single breath / He moved worlds / within Her / and She rose / like a phoenix / opened like a lotus, / like a tomb / birthing beauty / like vines / from Her womb

Come to me, come closer / Lean in and breathe my scent / Come with me, create my intent I am a vibrant wild lily / Growing untamed and free / I open in the heat of midday / I spread my petals big and wide / And invite the sun’s warm rays inside / I am not shy and I will not hide / This primal power that lies inside All the other flowers / Run away and hide / Or openly despise and give nasty little replies / I do not grant them the bend of my pride / I don’t reply and I will not lie / Their stares and their glares / Like water off a duck’s back they glide All the bees want to come and see / What sweet juices hide at the core of me / They fight and boast and try to coast / Their way inside to hop on my feral ride / But I am a fickle flower with a wild root / And if you can’t handle my strength and my power / Then I think it’s best son, / You step back from this flower © AmandaGWright 2009.

I am Lilith, I am the original Venus, I am Isis. / I am God’s wife, I am the keeper of the Divine Feminine Energies…I have been ripped from the pages of history, I have been shamed into submission and banished to oblivion and still I return again and again and again. I am the beginning and I will be the end. I have been enslaved, imprisoned, raped, beheaded and burned at the stake and still you cannot kill me or destroy my truth. You can hide behind your book of lies, you can burn me and scorn me with your hate-filled eyes and yet, and yet still I will rise, like the moon stretched out high in the sky or with the bubbling strength of the tide, I will rise, I will rise, I WILL RISE! This image is part of the Lost Goddess Diaries. / Mixed media and collage on 140lb watercolor paper. / All collage elements are of my own creation. © AmandaGWright 2009.
