Ok let me start-When I was growing up, (15 in 1994) I was hooked on the Amiga computer. I loved doing everything on it. Video work, to DTP to graphics work. I sat for hours rendering pretty cool 3D animation. I was kinda heading toward a career in graphics but could not draw for the life of me. So I gave this up and became a cartographer., which I love. I get to travel the world, meet great people and see wonderful things. This has only heightened my interest in photography. I have always loved photography and my dad (Geoff46) does also. My technical skills have improved with practice and I take enough photos that just by the law of averages, I have to get a nice one eventually! My problem now though is this-post processing. I used to be big into web design, and hence Photoshop. Now however i dislike the thought of playing around with my photos. Its almost cheating. I am gradually forcing myself to start using it a bit (Suburban Lifestyle), and have liked my results. However I still do not want to spend hrs I do not have playing around with an image. I feel that many of my images are lacking the final touch to make them much better. I suppose part of the issue is that I dont know what to do. Im sure many of my photos require better cropping, saturation enhancement etc. I have picked up Adobe Lightroom and trying to at least do some basic develop tools. Does anyone else have the same issues as me? What can I do? How many hours do you guys spend post processing? How do you feel about it all?

I have just recently started using Adobe Lightroom in conjunction with going RAW with my photos. It was something i had always wanted to try as soon as i got my DSLR but i was always put off by the fact i didn’t know enough about it and it was always too expensive to get a decent RAW editor/developer just to try. Then, i finally got round to downloading a trial of Lightroom. I’ve always been an Adobe convert since i used Photoshop 4 for work about 7/8 years ago and thought if there was one RAW editor woth trying this was it. First impressions were it was complicated, it didn’t look like anything i’d ever used before. But, after a few runs through the workflow i warmed up to it. I now am the proud of owner of a full version of Adobe Lightroom and am loving it! It feels tailor made for someone like me who is either too stupid or too lazy know how to use the settings on his camera better and can’t afford paying for training courses to learn these things in case the course doesn’t suit me. I find that i am able rescue almost any bodged up photo in Lightroom and i think the notion and execution of the non-destructive developing system is nothing short of genuis. No, i don’t work for Adobe by the way, i’m just a very happy customer but if anyone from Adobe is reading this and would like to reward me for my PR skills a copy of CS3 would go down very nicely :D

After a long conversation with a good friend, I decided to download an trial run Adobe Lightroom. I watched the flash demonstration on the Adobe site, and saw that it had many tools that would be extremely useful for me. So, I used it on one of my favorite pictures, “Medieval Nights”. I like this photograph, but I wanted to do something more with it, so I imported it into Lightroom. After a few minor lighting adjustments, use of the leveling tool, and a crop, I have a result that went beyond my expectations. Medieval Nights 2. I will try it out on some of my landscape photographs, and will take some others, deliberately not leveling the horizon, to see just how good this program is. If I like the results, I see it becoming a permanent addition to my photo/image editing software.

At what seems like the last possible moment, a friend from work calls me to arrange a photo shoot of her and her dog before the day is over. Willingly I told her I’d do it, and to meet me down on the beach behind my house. What I didn’t realize, (mostly because I had been sleeping all day!) is that the sun was already low on the horizon, and it might be too late by the time she arrived! She arrived just in time to get a few good shots, but I slowly began fighting the lack of lighting on a black dog! The sky was still quite bright, but the sunlight wasn’t very strong for subject lighting. I feared they wouldn’t come out. Drive home, Opened up Lightroom. Ran some curves, ran the recovery feature, and amazing! They came out almost perfect!!! Aside from a little grain from the ISO, there was no clipping at all! Everyday this program never ceases to amaze me! I don’t even see the need for regular Photoshop anymore! Lightroom saves the day!

So, I recently got Lightroom 2 and I LOVE IT! Not sure if any of you have tried it, but there are several new tools on there that can be used in lieu of PS for quick fixes: Cloning for super fast blemish removal without using PS! / You can now adjust brightness, clarity colors, on only certain areas of the photo. This is great, especially in my work flow because I start in LR, then go on to PS for additional work. But saves me soooo much time. Also, because of the selective adjustments, dodging and burning backgrounds can be a breeze too! Check it out if you already haven’t. Here’s some more info

Hi everyone. I have an Imac that is less than 2 years old (if that) that I have upgraded and packed with loads of great, new software worth hundreds. Below are the specs: 20 inch (white), 250 GB HD Some software (already installed. no disk): / dreamweaver CS $371 new on amazon.com / photoshop cs / Flash CS3 (just purchased!) current prices $600, new; $200 upgrade! / Lightroom 1 / Mac the ripper (movie ripping) / Toast / Microsoft Office for Mac Totally ready for Tivo transfer! I copy all my movies (that I own ;) ) using mac the ripper, then I convert to Tivo extension and I just trasnfer form my Imac to the tivo. I’ve created a library on my Imac! • One month until we go there again… / I’ve just realised that there’s just too many of these that I’ve never uploaded here before – all of these were taken during october, 2008. - / all of these were processed with different presets from valiant, our brand new presets collection. I was testing some of them in our vacation pictures and I just loved how these look together. / =) www.lalamartinresources.webs.com

  • A family shot taken on a recent trip back to dear old Blighty. / I have no idea who the old lady is on the end but she sort of makes the picture.

  • A recent shot taken on the back of the Dart Explorer, a boat situated on the River Dart, Dartmouth. I assisted a wedding and the reception was on board this boat in the evening, leaving me a little time to experiment with my fairly new flash gun, and some lightroom skills. So impressed with my flash gun, especially since it was cheap and of no particular make! It produces a really fabulous light, really reminiscent of the ring flash.
