This is actually a photoshop creation. The lightning is real, as are the clouds – but the water is my first attempt at creating a water reflection in photoshop. The actual image the bottom 1/3 is a field in landlocked Oklahoma…

Monsoonal thunderstorm and lightning, Darwin.
Monsoonal thunderstorm and lightning, Darwin. Rollieflex SL66, 80mm lens, Fuji Velvia film.
I took this photo of a storm hitting the Glasshouse Mountains just after sunset from the top of Wild Horse Mountain. Unfortunately the mountains don’t look too sharp due to the blurring effect of the heavy rain. I had a lot of trouble holding the tripod down the wind was so fierce let alone keeping rain drops off the lens.

Thunderstorm and lightning, Darwin Harbour, Australia. / Nikon F3, Fuji Velvia fim. / © Copyright Ern Mainka - Nominated to Pay It Forward Group by Billyboy Billyboy’s comment: / “I spent a LONG time searching through my favs… I’m pretty choosey about what I put in there so the choice was always gonna be a tough one. Thing is, I am just amazed by lightning. It has fascinated me since I can remember, standing outside in the rain during a T-storm (yeah, I know better now!) just to catch the flashes and to smell the ozone when a big one hit close by. And now being on an art site like RB and others, I’ve come across some awesome takes by people who really make it their life’s aim to capture the best of natures fireworks. But when I stumbled upon Ern’s take on this storm over Darwin, I was mesmerized. Here it’s not about the flash. The flash is beautifully understated… but it’s about the impact the strike has on the vast expanse surrounding it. From the beautifully lit cloud formations, right down to the apparent vulnerability and insignificance of the man made ship reflecting the sun from the opposite direction. This is a masterpiece for which I am awestruck over the fact that it didn’t get as many comments as it deserved. Maybe showcasing it here will bring it to the attention of lots of others who will see its beauty as I have. Ern, thanks for blowing me away bigtime with your art!” Thank you Bill. / Ern -

Taken on the same wild night as “In the Beginning” but this time looking north to Sydney from Bundeena Cliffs in Royal National Park NSW Australia. You’re looking at about 20km of city in this shot so that is one long lightning bolt! Canon 30D / Tv: 5secs / Av: f/2.8 / ISO 100 / FL: 17mm

The hi-rises of Main Beach with lightning going out to sea. Forgot my wet weather gear today and caught on the wrong side of the bridge as I was watching a cell to the north and one moved in behind me. Overlooking the broadwater, Gold Coast (06/12/08) View more of my storm images / / Storms

This is a great example of a staccato cloud to ground lightning strike (in this case cloud to sea). Staccato cloud-to-ground lightning is perhaps the most photogenic of all lightning. It is termed “staccato” because the lightning is comprised of just one single, rapid discharge and is typically accompanied by a myriad of interesting and intricate branching. I caught this one at 5am just off the Warrnambool coast a couple of weeks ago – very nice ! bubblesite / photography blog / portfolio Canon EOS 5DmkII. / ©T.Middleton2009 —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——
Watching an amazing lightning show tonight as it passed through between Beachport and Millicent in the Limestone Coast. If you view this large you will see small red dots at the bottom of the strike – they are the tower lights on the Wind-farm nearby at Canunda. Canon 400D 17-85 lens. Two second exposure.
