There a many different ways to photograph light trails and painting with light, the following tutorial is what worked for us at the Snapshots meet. You can also find this tutorial in the Red Door Creative Group you can also enter your awesome images in the Painting with Light Challenge. There are two very different methods you can use when painting with light. Painting portions of the subject with diffuse light / Here you paint around your subject, or on your subject to expose desired parts (eg. Face), while ensuring that the torch faces away from the camera and directly towards the subject. You can get quite close to the subject for a more intense light, or move back for a softer light. This technique will give your object a beautiful glow. Creating light trails / In this technique you use the light source (LED or laser light works best) to draw outlines or shapes making sure that the light is facing the camera. / Here is what you will need A camera capable of long exposures A tripod. Since you will be shooting long exposures you want to make sure your camera sits still. A torch, LED light, glow stick or laser light. A dark location. If you are going to shoot outside – make sure that you are not doing this under a street light, or where a car can come by and spoil your shot Here is how it’s done Using an exposure of about ten-to-thirty seconds and a tripod for best results, it is simply a case of taking a test shot to judge the exposure needed to get enough of a light trail, but not to overexpose the image. Use your camera on a manual setting – we had our aperture set to 18 or greater with the shutter speed at 20 seconds. Then once the shutter is open use your light source to light what you want to paint. You can use the light as a brush, and smear the light, or, you can use the light as a pen, and do precise work. Areas where you go slowly will be more lit then others. Be careful not to linger too much over the same place – you may end up with blown out areas. Once the shutter closes, inspect your image and make any corrections. / Tips n Tricks Don’t worry too much about being in the shot, if you move around while painting, the exposure will be too dark to actually capture you unless you shine the light right at yourself. So don’t stand in one place but you don’t have to run around frantically. Remember that different light sources will give you different colours. / • Torch light – yellow light (perfect for painting the subject) / • LED light – white light (perfect for tracing the subject and creating light trails) / • Try glow sticks for interesting colours – the kids waved the stick in front of the lens, this created a great colour glow. Enjoy and get shooting!! If you have any issues or questions feel free to Bubble Mail either Sarah or Daniel (your hosts), we are happy to help.

*Hello there and welcome to Sunday Arts…
Hello there and welcome to Sunday Arts Talkback where we’d like to hear your opinions on current art happenings and strange or amazing things or happenings you’ve come across in the news relating to art during the week. Sunday Arts Talkback is like a radio program which will normally be aired right here ‘on air and live chat’ from 10am till 12 noon on Sunday Mornings.. (but today there will be an extension til 1pm…then i’m off to another venue) I thought this might be fun, as Sundays are pretty quiet around the bubble, so if you have time, check in….share with us something interesting you’ve seen or heard during the week in the wider art community (outside or inside red bubble) and share, share, share. This is a bit of a new thing for me, and a learning experience. I’m going to be around for a couple of hours every Sunday morning if I can, but you can all get the discussion going even if I’ve gotta duck out. Thought we could start off with this very curious piece of art and what you think of it here Has the art world gone bananas? ART NEWS – SIX BANANAS SITTING ON A WINDOW SILL VALUE £15,000 S.A.T. is open to you, the public, but I would ask we keep it polite and respectful and we are just really interested to hear of any strange, unusual and interesting topics that may have sparked your interest or that you may come across during this weeks news etc. You might like to also journal about whatever you’ve come across and share it with your watchlist. So what do you all think of this? We could do this over in the general discussion forums, but at the moment many of the folks from my watchlist don’t always visit there….so I thought we could start this running here….if you all like it and have fun, we may eventually take this to the forums too….let me know what you think? One rule, let’s keep it light and fun, because life outside this glorious bubble is hard enough :) *NB *There may even be a place for guest speakers with this new program, so please do let us know if you have anyone of interest in the arts, that might like to come along and give us the benefit of their knowledge and experience in the arts, and we’ll try and set something up. Let me know early if you do have someone lined up, so I can journal about this and rally some interest in the session.
