This shot has a bit of a story behind it, I was with a group of fellow photographers on what we call a Ferry Hop expedition. Basically we spend the day or most of it, riding the Sydney Ferries to different destinations taking photos on board and where ever we disembark. On this particular outing a few of my fellow photographers and I decided to issue a challenge, walk up to perfect strangers and ask for to take their photo. This was only the second person I ask after the challenge was issued. This lovely gentleman had a great face, a lovely white and gray beard and looked just the part for a nautical theme. As it happens when I approached him, we were nearing a replica tall ship and the Darling Harbour light house (scene in the background). Well all the elements just fell into place, and I only took two shots but I knew I had bag a great image, I thanked the Sea Captain as I’ve now called him, showed him the image and let him travel the rest of the trip in peace. I’m considering entering this in the portrait section of the Real Photography compeition, while it may be a little unconventional, it’s one of my favourite portraits (and most the others my wife won’t let me post as they are pictures of her).

St Augustine Florida Lighthouse watercolor painting by artist Derek McCrea
One of the many light beacons on the coastline of Jersey
This picture was taken on March 8, 2008; a very rainy foggy day in Sambro, NS. This was fitting weather for a small fishing community remembering their five friends, neighbours and family members lost at sea 20 years ago. On March 8th, 1988 the fishing boat “Bonnie Lou II” was lost at sea and the five fisherman on board were never found. Had the men survived the storm the sight of this lighthouse, which stands at the entrance to Sambro, would have welcomed them home.

The lighthouse at Point Lonsdale stands guard over the very narrow shipping passage of water through the Heads to Port Phillip Bay and also as beacon of hope and a welcome sight to many a weary sailor, as they know when this is seen, it is only a few more hours until they can dock in the Ports of Melbourne and Geelong. / Psalm 27:1 / A Psalm of David. / 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; / Whom shall I fear? / The LORD is the strength of my life; / Of whom shall I be afraid Pentax istDS Camera.

The warm glow of the setting sun is reflected on the landward side of the Point Lonsdale lighthouse, on a cold, windy Winter’s afternoon. Two different shots of the same lighthouse at either ends of the day.

Another in the Masters series. / This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895. I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb. I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

My version of a Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-97). From an 1895 watercolour of Ramsgate Harbour. A panoramic shaped painting, 23” x 10”. / Hand-made, 140lb rough paper. Over 20 hours work. Multiple layers of semi-transparent and opaque watercolour, and white zinc gouache for highlights. Viewing in larger size is necessary.
On a recent trip to New Jersey I took some time and drove to the coast to shoot this lighthouse. I enjoyed the color version but really like it in the sepia so here you are. Enjoy! Nikon D50/18-70mm NIkon Lens / /
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Bonnet Island Lighthouse at Hells Gate Macquarie Harbour, West Coast Tasmania, Australia. The narrow 120 metre entrance to the huge Macquarie Harbour was discovered in 1815. Within a year, timber cutters moved in. Navigating the narrow entrance and its sandbar was an essential hazard in getting the timber to Hobart. / A signal station was erected near Cape Sorell in 1822 to indicate conditions entering the harbour. It was manned by convicts from the newly established penal settlement at Sarah Island. / The conditions were so bad at the new Sarah Island that the convicts named the entrance to the harbour Hells Gate. Other records indicate the name was used due to the enormous rush of the tides through the entrance to the harbour which can create very dangerous conditions. / In 1891, a light was exhibited from two white six sided wooden towers, one on the western side of Entrance Island, and the other on Bonnet Island. Also, a breakwater was constructed at Hells Gate to check the sandbar, and in 1899 a light was constructed a Cape Sorell. / The Strahan Marine Board purchased a dredge in 1909 and continued to improve the entrance so that many large vessels could enter. / The Entrance Light was powered by gas until 1977, when solar panels and batteries took over. / The weatherboard cladding was renewed in 1989. Wawatam Lighthouse at the entrance to the Marina in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It stands at the end of an old railroad dock which was once used to load railroad cars onto a ferry to transport them between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. The city of St. Ignace has renamed he lighthouse after the 338-foot Chief Wawatam rail car ferry. It rises 52 feet in the air at the end of a newly constructed Huron Boardwalk and serves as a sentinel to the city’s marina. The beacon projects 13.2 miles over Lake Huron and will serve as a navigational aid to boaters. This lighthouse was acquired from the Monroe Michigan Welcome Center in 2004, was moved to St. Ignace in five sections, and went operational on August 20th, 2006.
