The iron lighthouse was built in 1871 and was originally located at the entrance to Ulladulla harbour. The first Lighthouse keeper was William Gambell, an ex-sea captain who lived with his wife and family in a slab house on the beach. The lighthouse was re-erected to Ulladulla’s south headland – Warden’s Head in 1889.

A black and white with vignetting version of my image of Port Fairy Lighthouse. This is one of my all time favourite photographs so I thought I would share it. It was taken on a point and shoot about 3 years ago so is not available for larger prints. The flowers in the foreground of this photo have a story of their own. The bulbs of the irises were planted by the first lighthouse keepers in the garden of the long since ruined keepers house. All that remains of the house is a portion of the garden. The iris bulbs come up every spring as a reminder of what once was. Colour version is also available. This is how it looks in card form: I have this image on my wall using a black matte and charcoal frame which looks absolutely amazing and sets off the black and white image well.

I took this shot of a very hazardous stretch of coastline on the very southern tip of Newfoundland just below a lighthouse. The winds were so high that day and the sea was whipped into such a boiling cauldron, my imagination was taken away. As I stood there and watched I could almost visualize a ghost ship emerging from the fog, the lighthouse that stood just above me was blowing its foghorn which added a sense of eerieness to the already somber scene. The winds lashed at me attempting to pluck me into the sea as a offering of peace for disturbing this epic battle between land and sea. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

While visiting Duluth Minnesota last year, I stopped out at the break water just before sunset. People were mingling around the pier waiting for the iron ore ship the Federal EMS to come in.. / The lighthouse is owned by the Coast Guard. Grounds open, tower closed. It was a dreary and grey day today. The fog was so thick so I decided to go for a drive to one of the lighthouses. This is an old outhouse hanging over the edge of the cliff next to the lighthouse. This is what the lighthouse keeper would use to scratch that itch… lol. Taken at Lake Hefner in Okc, Okla. about 2 weeks ago. Was a tad chilly = ) But the first time I had seen the pier empty… ever. I guess once it gets cold the site-seers go home lol

At 93 feet high, Yaquina Head Lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest lighthouse. The tower, made from 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, is double walled for insulation and dampness protection. One story, which has circulated for years, tells of a workman falling from the scaffolding into the hallow between the masonry walls where his body could not be retrieved. A fine story, and perhaps an explanation for the station’s purported ghost, but records show no workers were killed during construction. Strong winds did blow one worker off the cliff. Amazingly, his oils skins acted somewhat like a parachute and he only received minor injuries. The lighting of the first order Fresnel lens was delayed due to parts of the lantern somehow being lost in transit. Finally, after almost two years of toil, the light shone for the first time on August 20, 1873.
