Looking down magnet tubing of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Protons will be fired nearly at the speed of light and collide at detector points such as the 25m high, 7000 tonnes ATLAS (pic below). / / Straddling the Franco-Swiss border, the tunnel housing the LHC is 27 km in circumference, making it the largest particle collider in the world. / Confirmation of the existence, or absence, of the Higgs particle, identification of extra dimensions and investigation of antimatter are among the highly anticipated results of the particle collisions. But no one really knows what’s going to happen. / To keep the magnets functioning, they are cooled to -271.3°C, colder than the temperature of space between galaxies. Final stages of cooling are currently taking place and the LHC is expected to begin firing within a month or two. / Scientists at CERN were the inventors of the internet; www.CERN.ch was the first website to exist on the web. Update: Well, here we are, the world hasn’t ended. Onwards and upwards for the advancement of knowledge – yipppeee!

Tunnel / by Third Day I won’t pretend to know what you’re thinking / I can’t begin to know what you’re going through / I won’t deny the pain that you’re feeling / But I’m gonna try and give a little hope to you Just remember what I’ve told you / There’s so much you’re living for There’s a light at the end of this tunnel / There’s a light at the end of this tunnel / For you, for you / There’s a light at the end of this tunnel / Shinin’ bright at the end of this tunnel / For you, for you / So keep holdin’ on You’ve got your disappointments and sorrows / You ought to share the weight of that load with me / Then you will find that the light of tomorrow / Brings a new life for your eyes to see So remember what I’ve told you / There’s so much you’re living for
