Dawn at Garie Beach, Royal National Park just south of Sydney, Australia. A seagull very obligingly flew into shot as I was taking this. Can you spot the silhouetted fishermen? / I’m lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen – it’s only a little national park (14,000 ha) but the variety of stuff to photograph is simply endlessly inspiring. It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot.

In quiet light, a golden glow / lasting a hundred perfect heartbeats… Artist’s notes: I have had the wonderful chance of seeing herons actually sunning themselves like this. In fact, there was one day that absolutely struck me with awe about the playfullness of these birds. I was working with a sheetrock crew, and the house we were at was on the banks of the Columbia river. We’d had a series of strange weather incidents in the valley, all of which flooded the river, and actually made a huge mess of it with countless trees/logs, branches, etc. being swept down the mountains and into the water. So for a couple of days, there was an endless log jam floating down the river. I was taking a break at the house during one of those days, and noticed herons standing on the logs floating down the river. They had their wings held out like in my picture above, and they were facing the sun. They would float down just so far, then turn and fly back up river. Next thing you know…here they’d come again… on a new log. All day long these herons kept repeating that cycle, catching rides on the logs while they could…and sunning themselves in the process. I thought that was so interesting and cool. Mindscape is a mental or psychological scene or area of the imagination. The word is most suitable to the filed of psychology. Mindscape has two words combined in such a way that the meaning goes beyond it – Mind and Escape… It can be translated as a Mind that wants to escape or a Mind that is in route of escaping. This adventure can be in the sense of reality or in spiritual world. / Depression sufferers escape from facts, hallucinates escape from reality, psychotics and neurotics escape from many other forms of life. We usually state that they are people who require help so that they can live an ordinary life. But who is to decide what is normal and what is abnormal? If ones can see the other side of horizon, according to them they deem the facts strongly that they hold about life, oneself and reality. They believe they are the right ones who are amongst wrong people. Are you one of them? I tend to assume we all are, one way or another. Caught ‘up the sware’ (a local viewpoint) at dawn yesterday ( 23/9/08) as the sun rose over the tweed valley just outside Peebles, scottish borders. An especially heartwarming sight after the wet grey summer we’ve had … and it’s straight from my Nikon 4800 coolpix compact camera, untouched. ;))) See also mist in the valley taken at the same time ! and also front row seat cheers all / ding / :))

An early morning seascape from my neighbouring town of Paignton as the sun was rising and giving a pleasing warm glow to the old pier. I am always fascinated at how gulls seem to settle down during a sunrise or sunset, there were dozens in flight a few minutes before I took this shot and as the sun broke through, all but a few had settled down on the roof of the pier buildings, adding to that eerie calm of the sunrise. Nikon D100 / 38mm / F7.1 for 1/200sec.

I’m temporally challenged so dawn shots are rare for me but a couple of times a year near to daylight saving change-overs the sun stops getting up at a silly hour and becomes rather more civilised. I was lucky enough to shoot this after a night of rain so the rock pool on top of the cliffs was full. Shot off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, Sydney.
