The Isle of Skye lies of the West Coast of Scotland. I was sitting on top of a cliff on the Island at 4am with my Border Collie and Camera by my side, just dreaming till day break when i spotted the light over what I call the Lower Isles breaking through the early morning clouds. Eilean Donan Castle one of the Iconic Scottish Castles was just a magic place to visit and photograph. I spent close to 9 hours taking in the surrounds, the atmosphere and the serenity and of course the odd photo or two. Here is one of my favourites, I really like the balance of light and the reflections. This was the 3rd last photo I took during this 9 hour period, and goes to show that patience can pay off. Taken in January 2005, just south of Perth, Scotland. I looked out the window here late one evening to see a “cloud” of luminous green oriented downwards – “that’s no cloud!” and 5mins later I was a couple of miles away in the middle of nowhere on the road south of Moncrieffe Hill, admiring the pretty greens and reds :)

Caught ‘up the sware’ (a local viewpoint) at dawn yesterday ( 23/9/08) as the sun rose over the tweed valley just outside Peebles, scottish borders. An especially heartwarming sight after the wet grey summer we’ve had … and it’s straight from my Nikon 4800 coolpix compact camera, untouched. ;))) See also mist in the valley taken at the same time ! and also front row seat cheers all / ding / :))

Out for hours on a perfect day out with my new dslr it took ages to get far as I kept stopping to try things like this…. bliss! Seasons Greetings! / Wishing everyone a very merry time whatever you’re celebrating / :))) Late afternoon light on this frosty winter scene near Manor Brig over the River Tweed outside Peebles in the lovely Scottish Borders. Taken in a gorgeous winter wonderland, following 24 hours of freezing fog on my first ‘proper outing’ with a real dlsr.. but one of those ‘I must be mad’ moments.. crouched behind a crash barrier on a bend in the Glasgow road, sunday drivers whizzing past… (rb home page 19/11/09) / Nikon D60, VR Nikkor 18-200, UV filter / f/9,1/40 sec, ISO-100, 70mm !

Another one from my recent trip to Skye. It took me a while to process this one, but I’m glad I spent the time doing it. Taken on the beach at Elgol on the same day as the other similar one I posted. Different composition, same idea – I wanted to get a horizontal shot as I very rarely take them. I was drawn to this particular spot by the different coloured rocks, and the big rock in the bottom left corner which leads you round the edge of the water and back into the mountains again. Canon Eos 5D, 24mm TS-E at f22, ISO 100 for 8 seconds with a 1.2 ND and 0.6 ND grad

Captured freehand in the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol, Isle of Lewis. Smoke from the peat fire in the centre of the main room is caught in the light from the only window. Historic Scotland site The museum is well worth a visit to get insights of what life was like in this typical old stone house. The so-called blackhouses did not have a chimney but the peat smoke rose up through the thatched roof. This had the added advantage of keeping the roof from rotting or rain from coming through. This is my homage to the generations of islanders who lived in these houses. Addtional information from Ranald: “The tar from the peat smoke made everything inside black, hence the name. The beasts were often kept at one end of the house, where the floor sloped down. The heat rising off them kept the smoke away. A very clever system.” Nikon D1X, Nikon 18-70 F3.5-4.5G. A lovely geranium with the most wonderful scent coming from its leaves if touched.. .. lovely in a pot near a path or doorway so you brush against it.. The little pink petals can be candied and used to decorate jellies and sorbets too (havent tried that yet..)
