This calender is a compilation of light paintings. There are two methods to creating a light painting. One method is to wave or to move lights in front of the lens. The other method is to move the camera itself in front of the lights being recorded as the image. Both methods usually involve a long exposure, between one and thirty seconds and sometimes longer on the ‘Bulb’ camera setting. All my images were created with the second method, movement of the camera itself. Some of the lights are street and building lights but most are from a set of Christmas lights hanging in trees at a local Farmers Market in Downtown Asheboro, North Carolina. I used a Nikon D300 along with a 17-35mm and a 70-200mm lens to create these images. I am very proud of them. Minimal cropping along with some burning and dodging in photoshop were also used. Some distracting border lines were removed. I have been a photojournalist for the past ten years and to this day find it hard to stray outside the ethics of photojournalism photoshop techniques used to enhance my images. This means as little as possible enhancement of these images was applied in their creation. There is one exception, ‘Please God Wake Me Up From My Reality’, which noticeably is the same image four times.

Lightpainting around Australia
The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are depicted in Scott’s atmospheric and vibrant oils. / JAN: The Plane to Barra lands on the beach just beyond this croft. / FEB: This Sky study focuses on the effects of afterglow at sunset across the Western isles. / MAR: Crinan, Postcard picturesque harbour town located at the end of the Crinan Canal. My wife and I stayed at the Crinan Hotel owned by Scottish landscape artist Frances MacDonald. / APR: Looking West in the evening, cloud cover can become backlit and play tricks with perceived colour. / MAY: This place on the East coast of Barra allowed me a great opportunity to play with cool/warm colour contrasts and design-led mark making. / JUN: This loch (in the shape of the map of Scotland) I’ve painted many times. I pass it on trips to Skye and it looks different every time. / JUL: Sometimes what you want to say with colour can be restricted by reality for a representational painter… not here. This accurately depicts a recognisable landscape on Barra, while utilising many abstract elements. / AUG: When the horizon becomes unbroken all attention is focused on the forces of nature. / SEPT: The backlit effects of views out to sea from the West coast are in this case painted from memory. / OCT: Near the causeway from Barra (left) to Vatersay (right) this study captures a moment when the sun breaks out to strike the gulf stream waters which light up against the dark sky ahead. / NOV: Sometimes a literal depiction of a scene is the best way to highlight a postcard picturesque spot like this. / DEC: This describes the quality of evening light across the broken West Coast using contrasting translucent and opaque paint application.
I have selected some of my atmospheric paintings, and matched them to the months. Jan – Graveyard Metallica. The lowest, darkest point in winter, in the Northern hemisphere. It gets better from now on! Feb – Hetton Colliery 1838. A dark and industrial scene, we have to tough this month out, like those hard men of that era in the mines! Mar – Smalholm Sunset . The light begins to get brighter as Spring is nearly here. Apr – Blea Tarn. Spring is here and the light gets bright. May – El Golco . Bright long days are here! Jun – Corinth . The season warms up and the longest days of the year. July – Market Day. The hottest month. Aug – Toscana . Holidays abroad and at home. Sept – Victorian Lady Fishing . September begins to turn the season. Oct – Old Carpathia . The dark nights begin, and October ends with Halloween. Nov – Beamish Wheel . Autumnal colours are everywhere. Dec – Trees of Eden . The winter Solstice, and celebration of the birth of Jesus. The reverse is, of course, true for those of you in the Southern hemisphere!
