The Changling – Dragon Tales Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find this on a walk in the forest! As a child I was given a book called The Butterflies Ball and I just adored the full page colour illustrations. The holy city of Safed, perched on a mountain top in the upper Galilee, conjures many images to all lovers of the city. The romantic flavor of narrow cobblestone lanes and ancient synagogues fills one’s lungs with a new spirit. The rusty old houses with there domed roofs clearly identifies the city with the mysterious past of the Holy Land. The history of Safed, in real terms, dates back only five hundred years to the beginning of the 16th century. As if out of nowhere, Jews from near and far settled there – as if answering a divine call – and built the largest Jewish settlement in Palestine. Furthermore, great scholars and mystics opened yeshivos in Safed, being an added incentive to other young men of wisdom to settle there. In one sense, the last half of the 16th century was the pinnacle of Torah grandeur which the city experienced. The author of the Shulchan Aruch (Jewish Code of Laws), Rabbi Joseph Karo, sat at the head of the rabbinical court while compiling his compendium of Jewish Law. At the same time, another saintly man by the name of Rabbi Isaac Luria revealed the mystical side of the Torah, called Kabalah. Together these men and their disciples opened new pathways to the Torah which embedded an invisible holiness in the very rocks of the city. Today everyone who strolls through the city is caught off guard by the hidden spirit of Safed which vibrates full of life after so many generations. Not only newcomers are surprised, but even weathered old comers as well. Homage to Safed. The weather for this years Winter Magic Festival was a bit of everything. But even though there was rain and fog and it was cold… it didn’t stop the crowds from enjoying themselves! Late in the afternoon the mist started to roll in and it was getting dark.. a few storeholders were starting to pack up but the street was still full of people. I took a photo at the time because I really liked the atmosphere and then when I had my week away recently, I let myself start to play with it! This is the result so far… I think I would like to try a few other ideas too… : )) Mixed Media on canvas paper. / 40.5×60

The little Star Fairy is very busy illuminating the park to create the magic of Christmas. Darkness comes very early in the winter, but the beautiful glittering trees will light up the night and will make the children’s eyes sparkle with joy and wonder. I uploaded the first version of this file quite late at night and did not notice until the following morning that I had uploaded the wrong version with the cloning out of the electric wires still obvious and the concrete texture too strong. I thought that I might as well fix a few things at the same time, so this one is in fact a rework of what I have uploaded last night, on December 19. During my recent midnight walk in the park, I set my camera on a tripod and made two shots of the illuminated trees around which unfolds the circular skating rink. One in focus and the other completely out of focus for the bokeh. In Photoshop, I combined the two images in overlay, adding a few adjustment layers, several sparkle and glitter brushes and a stock image of a child. I omitted the concrete texture in this version, but added a very thin overall veil of light and a little blur to add softness.
