  • Estelle, an overly beautiful life-model and dancer, with incredible curls. Theatre Box is one from a series where I have taken the same sketch and added layers to create different scenes. Enormous fun in doing so, like dressing up a doll. Pencil drawing, digital overlay.

  • This self-portrait was during the aftermath of a catastrophic flooding. A monster swell of water (measured 15 metres wide) swept through the lower valley where I live taking whatever was in it’s path. It tore through the lower garden of my property before continuing on to pick up 4 cars and smash them into the wall of the town hall. It was surreal and frightening. The clear-up operation instructed by the Mayor was to clear and widen the stream, including the part of the stream that ran through my garden. I arrived home to diggers and chainsaws and fires and what had once been a secret garden of pretty trees and dappled light through leaves was now razed to the ground. The following morning I stood at the edge of the stream watching the remaining wooden embers burn. Self-portraits of myself are rare, for the most part these fleeting studies serve to still my soul.

  • A fairly classical life drawing study using acrylic, compressed charcoal on paper… I was experiementing with dark shadows and moody lighting. Most of the people in my drawings were friends I hung around with at art school… none of us had money for models so we just drew each other.

  • Woodblock print. / March 2008 / Original print size: 20cms x 30cms

  • Woodblock Print / April 2008 / Printed on Japanese Awa paper / Size of original print: 20cms x 30 cms This is a reduction print, which was taken further than this stage, but I wasn’t as happy with the next stage as I am with this one. Only one print remains of this stage. I am planning to attempt something completely different with what is left of the plate after it was carved out further.

  • It’s been a long time since my heart thumped with nervousness. But uploading this make me feel so vulnerable. It’s been a long time since I’ve drawn anything, and I’ve never been particularly skilled at it. Rather, it’s something I enjoy and like to do in private, preferable under the bed covers with a torch. Last year I did some life drawing classes and just the idea of people being able to see over my shoulder was enough for me to stop. This is a short sketch done in about 10 minutes. I was trying to avoid looking at the paper and just focus my eyes on the subject. When I draw, I don’t like to take my pen off the page, feeling like if I do, I might forget my train of thought and stuff it all up. So anyway, I promised myself that this year I’d start showing people the stuff I am afraid of. To say anything less than “I’m shitting myself” wouldn’t do it justice.
