by Shawn CossAs a once psychology major, I was intrigued by Freud’s theory on the id and ego of the human psyche. It has been many years since those classes so my words may be somewhat off. But this piece is a self representation (aren’t they all?) of myself and how the “id” and “ego” play in our life decisions. We all seek pleasure and that constant feeling of euphoria, and our “id”’s only goal is to achieve those feelings without worry or care about the consequences of such actions. It is our “ego” that keeps the “id” in line, allowing us to think before we act, and to be able to foresee what may come of this pleasure seeking. It is a constant battle that wages on beneath our skin and sometimes the “id” overcomes. Some choose to live only by the “id”s bidding and never realize the destruction they leave behind when seeking their pleasures. I have been through that lifestyle once, and as much as I enjoyed such pleasures in bountiful amounts….the aftershock of those actions can still be felt today.

Work exhibited in the Visual Arts Association Group Exhibition ‘Four Seasons’, held Cairns Regional Gallery, Qld. / Theme – ‘The Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi Background: I had working individually on art compositions relative to my passion to interpret music, rhythm/movement and energy through the use of formal visual art elements ie. line, colour, tone, shape, texture and art media. The interpretation requires one’s senses to hear and feel, absorb sound and energies, to internalize and contemplate, as apposed to recording information seen/perceived through the eyes from the physical ‘outer’ world. One has to create and interpret a visionary abstract, from a pure transitional and spiritual sensual state, from one’s own internal environment, of knowledge, understanding and experience. I jumped at the chance when this exhibition theme came up. Also I am much inspired by Kandinsky and his work, a long time favourite art philosopher and mentor. ....................................... /

Since music is such an important part of my life, I decided to make a drawing dedicated to this love. Sadly, I cannot play an instrument myself, but I just love listening to music, as it can make me so happy, or make me feel inspired, or just as something to listen to when I feel sad. This shirt is also inspired by my youngest sister, who recently started to learn how to play the guitar. =) For the original drawing, you can go here /

Rainbows represent perfect balance and harmony, completion, health and wholeness. As we see them, we have come through difficult lessons and done a good job and our higher self is well pleased. / Ripples, like throwing a stone into water, creates an emanating circle of one ripple touching another, and another, touching another endlessly… / As I photographed this rainbow, I was reminded that my chosen path has always led me safely through difficulties, so that I may guide another through the same or similar difficulty – a connection of completion by sharing life’s trials and tribulations without dweeling upon them – but releasing them like the stone that sinks to the bottom of the pond, yet creating an endless touching circle of relationship and paying it forward. / The rainbow bridge across this redbubble site has had a remarkable rippling affect on me and the connections of human-beings I feel so akin to, for this I’m grateful and hopeful that it continues to touch me deeper… Love can build a bridge Photo enhanced in Photoshop7 with Water ripple from redfield plug-in

Not leaving well enough alone, I ventured into googling and found an amazing photograph (hven.swarthmore.edu) of a Wind Bubble and began searching more of the Stellar Winds ~ this all seemed to fit, so I sketched a female figure being blown by the wind and layered it atop the Wind Bubble, editing a little more with the Redfield fractilius plug-in to bring the force of the wind alive with evidence of its power, though unseen… “Thought is the Wind, knowledge the sail, and mankind the vessel. ” August Hare
