Mark, an American soldier, gave his life for his fellow countrymen in the war in Iraq. The only one of his unit to survive the initial blast, he battled for life as he was flown back to the United States for medical care. His family flocked to his side and surrounded him with love in his final hours. Not long after his arrival in America, he died on home soil in the arms of his loved ones. His mother Kim, my husband’s first cousin, wrote this poem, “Is it you?” as she struggled with grief and loneliness for her young son. She asked me if I had a dragonfly photo to accompany her poem which relates the tale of the dragonflies that seem to hover near her in a show of consolation. This image is our collaboration, our joint effort, in memory of Mark Graham who defended the cause of freedom with steadfast determination and a valiant heart. May he rest in peace and may the angels surround him and his family now and forever. (100% of proceeds from sales will go to the Mark W. Graham Foundation; see another image, “Is it you?” in this portfolio if you’d like a green dragonfly. It will print better in the card size). Taken from the Mark W. Graham Foundation website, here is additional information about the foundation to which all funds from the sales of these images will be donated: “The Mark W. Graham Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides support for young people of character and military families in crisis. It honors the legacy of Mark Graham, a fallen soldier whose strength of character and gift of service to his country are an inspiration to all who knew him. Mark was a Lafayette, La., native and his death opened the community’s eyes to the reality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make in their fight to keep our country free. He was married to Stephanie for a little more than a year when he died. Mark was 22 years old.”

Thrilled at being asked to take some pictures for my friends who are expecting their fist child, I jumped at the chance and suggested something a little different to the shoot they may have been thinking of having at home… / Shot out in the desert, west of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on an overcast and windy day… work in post processing, sat in my warm house on an even more overcast and windy day… winters here! / Read my journal for a description of the day… crowds and all!

“Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are.” ~ ALFRED AUSTIN This is my Secret Garden. My work of the last 2 years has culminated at this point. This piece is so very complex, but I will try to explain it to you. This is me. I am from the earth, of the earth, striving to save the earth. She is me, I am her. I live in the country on Kangaroo Island (Australia), surrounded by nature. I have wild kangaroos in my front yard every night, koalas in my trees, and my son Henley and I walk every day, and celebrate the amazing place we live. This nature has engulfed my being. On average, I have been taking about 100 images with my Canon PowerShot camera every single day for the past two years. Macro bugs, macro wildflowers, skies, dead trees, birds, flowers, shells, leaves, images from my orchard, burnt trees from the bushfires, dried up drought-affected dam bases, kangaroos, and of course, my son Henley. So many images have gone into this one piece. There are two worlds here. The abundant and thriving; and the dying, the gone forever. Our house was surrounded by devastating bushfires in Dec 2007 – a time I will never forget. Nothing but smoke could be seen out the windows. This land is vulnerable and changing for the worse every year as a result of Global Warming. It is an issue so very close to my heart because it is on my doorstep. What will this world be like for my child and all the children of now? Famine, drought, heat waves, extreme weather patterns and natural catastrophes, massive bushfires, more war, no jobs, no money, more disease, more animals extinct forever, less trees and rainforests, less farmers, less food. We are seeing it now. Something has to be done. My forehead shows a migraine I recently had during a heatwave. It felt like a penetrating light was entering my eye and illuminating half of my brain before exiting at the base of my skull where the vision centre of the brain is. It was very powerful to me. Vision. Have the vision before the world dies. Mother Earth is dying, as is half of me. What are you doing to help the earth survive? It’s up to our generation, or there will be nothing left. Over seven years ago, I became increasingly aware of the Earth changes and shifts in energy. Initially I tried to ignore them or find “logical” explanations as to what was happening, but eventually I was overwhelmed by what was happening on all levels around me. / Gradually I realized that it was the Earth herself who was trying to communicate with me.. / So I was compelled to take pen and paper and go and sit quietly in nature and ask “What is it you wish to tell me?” ...and this is what she said / ....... It has taken a long time for me to do this, but what was written back in 2003 has now been published in a book together with a collection of my images, and will be available for those who wish to read the message or honour the planet that we would be nothing without. This piece of art is to celebrate the publication of the book, Message From Mother Earth From the book….. “Do not be afraid. This is powerful awareness. But it is also useful and healing too. It teaches you that we can create the world we live in, by the power of our thoughts. You are seeing that your connection with every part of your life begins and ends within yourself, within your heart, within your true thoughts. You are part of this circle of life, this very web, this intricate design of cosmic energy. You are at the heart of it and from your heart comes the power to weave your own beautiful creation. It is within you to change, to heal, to create, and to simply BE. Do not overlook the importance of this knowledge. And do not overlook the magic. For if you can communicate with the planet you stand upon, and speak together from the heart, then nothing is impossible in heaven and earth! Believe it, and it shall be so. Disbelieve, and you hold only a hand full of dirt, and some air. I am real, and so are you, and we are connected.”
