It’s still astonishing that 16 days since the first Bushfires in Victoria were first mentioned, I am still meeting people who haven’t heard anything about them. I am therefore displaying a letter and video for those people who seem to be living on another planet…....... I received this email from a fellow RB member / Matt Tworkowski – 2 days ago – who kindly gave me permission to print it…... Hi Soph, very powerful & evocative piece of artwork, defiantly symbolic of the thoughts & feelings of so many here.Strange how the whole psyche of this nation has changed due to this tragic event, almost like a veil of darkness has been placed over the country. / In saying this it has also been amazing to see the generosity, love & spirit that it has conjured from not only others in the country but also from around the world.I heard a story the other day about farmers in Queensland who have been devastated by floods & subsequently have been given financial assistance from the government and have donated it all to the bushfire victims which I think is inspiring.Over 70% of Queensland has been declared a natural disaster area, but has not made the headlines due to the fires. / Another very sad thing I heard was that it is predicted up to 100 million animals have died as a result of the fires not only from being burnt but also due to loss of habitat ,very sad. / I would like you to know that I am reasonably safe where I live & although surrounded by the Macedon & Cobaw ranges open grassland separates us from the bushland. / I went through the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983 which up until a couple of weekends ago were the worst in countries history,we lost everything in those fires & were lucky to escape with our lives,I guess we all accept the risk to live in such an amazing country. / I want you to know I am very appreciative of your thoughts & kind words & touched deeply that you are constantly considering my welfare, thank you. / Please when you can, pray for the victims & also that we may get some rain, there are still 6 fronts burning & the temperature back to 35-40c next week,we need rain desperately. / Soph, take care Matt xxx One of the Hosts from The Underwater & Sealife Group Matt also put up this photograph today: A New Threat And for all those people who still know nothing about the fire I enclose a link to You Tube The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Please Join The World Healing Circle For Australia And Donate What You Can….... Join The Phoenix Appeal and see all the other artists that are helping victims of The Bushfires in whatever way they can. Your work counts and Australia needs your help and support now …Please Help! 2009 Victorian Bushfires / The Herald Sun Web Site of some of the people who lost their lives in the 2009 Victorian Bushfire disaster All profits from the sale of this image will be donated to The Bushfire Appeal.

Earth Watch tonight 8.30 – 9.30 Australia, turn off your lights for 1 hour :) / before photoshop colouring it was just a pencil sketch as above / / / Mother Nature a pencil drawing on paper / i’ve coloured this in photoshop this drawing came about while I was holidaying on an island off the Qld coast recently, I was there when the oil spill happened, and a cyclone threatened to disturb our lovely rest….but as it happened, we were not disturbed by either of these events, and were lucky enough to connect with dolphins each and every day, this is from my latest “Connection” series, it’s about our connection with creation and every living thing, especially the beautiful dolphins of Tangalooma.. I hand fed the dolphins and Tinkerbell, a mother dolphin gave me what i like to call 5 dolphin kisses to the hand. I also encountered the other dolphins called Echo, the 2 baby dolphins, one named Phoenix and it was a really special time for me. Dolphin facts I learned at Tangalooma: . Baby dolphins have hair and whiskers…they have a hairy growth on their fluke/tail and they have whiskers on their face, so that their mother knows when they are going to suckle…it tickles her and she can get into the right position . The pack of dolphins at Tangalooma have given many gifts of fish and / things like eels to their feeders and the staff their, which are in a glass display case with the various stories . The baby dolphins ‘play’ with puffer fish…they annoy the puffers til they PUFF and then toss them to and fro on the surface like they are ping pong balls . Dolphins chase their prey upside down . Many dolphins get entangled in fishing line and makes them unable to feed properly, as it gets around their fluke and around their mouths….they eventually die if they don’t receive intervention . The males get into packs and they fight for dominance, the stress of this shortens their lifespan, so the females actually live longer . A baby dolphin suckles for the first 18 months and does not eat anything while suckling…during that time the juvenile dolphin learns to hunt, they are not born with these skills, they are learned. . A baby dolphin suckles approximately every 10 minutes . Other dolphins in the pack protect the baby dolphins while the mother dolphin feeds, etc . Dolphins are mammals and share many similarities with humans…. / they can see well above and below the water :) . At Monkey Mia in Western Australia where they also feed wild dolphins, only the male dolphins come in to feed now, they have bullied the female dolphins so that they don’t come in to shore anymore….

It is estimated some 100,000,000 sharks are brutally slaughtered annually to service the increasing demand for shark fin soup. We are donating ALL proceeds of this product to a shark awareness program for 2010. For every $100 raised we will be able to buy advertising billboards throughout the city of Beijing in China, on which will be placed information to educate the general public into the plight faced by sharks. These boards will be endorsed by Yao Ming, professional basketball player with the Houston Rockets, who is one of China’s most influential, and followed personalities. Sharks are slow to mature and have few offspring. If they are to survive, some species populations are down an incredible 90% over the past two decades, then we have to act now. This calender may not be the most economic of options but with every profit penny going to this cause we can only hope that you see fit to align yourselves with a project that will have long term effects if not just for us but also, and more importantly, for our children. Thank you, / Mark Thorpe, / iDive Sharks Founder.
