  • Sony Cybershot, June 2009. Gazania is native of South Africa and is also called Treasure flower. The plant is treasured for its strangely patterned daisylike flowers. It grows to a height of about 15 inches with a spacing of 12 inches. The Gazania flowers bloom in solid colors from yellow to orange, red, pink and white or in or in wild color combinations with splashy stripes or rings of contrasting colors. They can be as large as four inches across. The leaves are finely lobed, dark green above gray, and grow in compact clumps 8 to 10 inches tall. Each clump supports a number of flowers held above the leaves on 6 to 10 inch stems. Gazania is a short-lived perennial. Gazania flowers bloom in abundance through fall, winter and into late spring and then flower irregularly during the summer months in Oliva, Spain in Europe. Gazania is very easy to grow and can hold strong in short periods of freezing. It grows well in all soil types and don’t like to be watered until they are dry. Good soil gives best growth but the plant tolerates poor, sandy soil. Gazania grows well in rock gardens or in hot, dry areas. Gazania requires less water than most annuals. Full sun is preferred and the flowers. Do not open on wet or cloudy days. Removing the old blossoms will increase the number of flowers produced. The plant is propagated by either seed or cuttings. A typical characteristic of the Gazania flower is that they are particular to light so they close up in the evenings and on overcast days the way that dandelions and tulips do. The specialty of the daisy flower meanings is that there are no negative meanings to it. The meanings of daisy flower are all positive in nature. In the 17th century, Carolis Linnaeus gave daisy its unique name. There are various kinds of daisies found all over the world. Like, the African Daisy / Common Daisy / Michaelmas Daisy / Painted Daisy / Painted Daisy / Marguerite Daisy / Crown Daisy or Garland Chrysanthemum A daisy was often used by maidens to decorate their hair. A common daisy flower meaning is innocence. Devoid of any sin or guilt, daisy is the perfect symbol of innocence. Daisy is often used while confessing undying love. Though the use of flowers for proposing love may be ancient but daisy captures the language of love best with its silence. In earlier days a daisy from a maiden was an honorable gesture and an act of affection. Close to innocence, a daisy also means purity. Though these daisy flower meanings are close to each other, they are not really similar. Innocence is not a guarantee for purity. A daisy can also be used by married woman and personify the purity that daisy symbolizes. Daisy is appropriate in capturing purity of the mind, heart and soul. Thus, daisy is the ultimate symbol of inner sanctity. There are other daisy flower meanings too, which are not romantic in nature. A daisy hints at a wrapped up secret and even points at keeping it hidden. Thus, daisy symbolizes truth too. It stands for the concealed truth, away from everyone else’s notice. When a daisy was given in public, it meant a transfer of secret from the giver to the receiver. and more Daisy Symbolism The flower symbolism associated with the daisy is purity, innocence, loyal love, beauty, patience and simplicity. Daisies are often depicted in meadows in Medieval paintings, also known as a “flowery mead.” Daisies are believed to be more than 4,000 years old and hairpins decorated with daisies were found during the excavation of the Minoan Palace on the Island of Crete. Even further back, Egyptian ceramics were decorated with daisies. Daisies were used in Mary Gardens. Commercially important plants in the daisy family include the food crops lettuce, chicory, globe artichoke, sunflower, safflower and Jerusalem artichoke. Other commercially important species include flowers used as herbs and in herbal teas and other beverages. Chamomile and calendula are grown commercially for herbal teas and the potpourri industry. Echinacea is used as a medicinal tea.
