As I sink in my chair, strong coffee in hand, wishing it was something more potent…. I wonder if any of you really need to hear my story of disaster, but then I smile and realize I have an important message to share…. You simply must NOT lose yourself in the bubble for too long, or too often. / Life does have habit of sneaking up on you, or past you when you are missing in action…..(or engrossed in the bubble). / It can even be dangerous for health, home and sanity…. / I just learned that the hard way….. Here I sat, several hours ago, morning coffee in hand, the kids were on the school bus, the animals fed, a load of washing was buzzing away in the machine and I felt safe to “indulge” ...... / aaah….even the noises in the laundry, the animal sounds, the bird song could not shake my focus on some of your wonderful images…... and writing my messages back to you…. / UNTIL… / crash…. / bang… / holy shite! / on my front verandah, the sound of hooves….BIG ones! (now I have little horses who often would climb up on my old wooden verandah and clatter around to get my attention, or look for treats, but this was way too big for them!) I carefully open my front door, and there staring me in the face – a big black cow’s butt…..well, a steer’s rear end, to be exact. / This bloody great thing with his herd had wandered into my front yard demolishing everything in sight, and he, with the huge stick on his neck (put there because he kept getting through fences and I can tell you, it obviously hasn’t stopped him!) had decided to climb up the steps and wander casually along my verandah….eating my pot plants…. / So there he was in the sunshine, casually gazing out at his lesser buddies from the height of my humble verandah….. I knew if I scared him from behind like this, he would smash the glass table and chairs, the kids’ bikes and the multitude of potted plants and fall of the high end of the verandah (I live on the slope of a hill) so I thought I might go around and climb out my bedroom window and chase him quietly (ha ha) back to the opening where he might “get off”..... I decided to grab the broom from the laundry to help and as I stepped out to the back half of my house, my feet went ankle deep in water. / The whole room was flooded…. a hose had come unplugged, and both cycles of the washing machine dumped out on the laundry floor…..and you know the best thing about living in an old farm house? / When someone builds on a back room, they do it on the cheap, nobody bothers with a spirit level, so the floors slope the wrong way…..the drain holes are all uphill, and the water floods downhill. / again I say “holy you know what!!” So there was the kids playroom, carpet and couch, the bathroom, the sunroom and laundry all under water, and it was still flowing back through to the rest of my house. Did I use a four letter word? / who? / me? / (No I used dozens! AND made up some new ones….) The bovine was forgotten, I grabbed the broom and started swishing the water back towards any opening where i might get it out of those rooms. Grabbing clothes and clean washing to be folded, and kids toys and books up out of the water…... / aaaah you get the picture. / OF course the water just kept flooding back….. living on a hill has its perks ha ha…...but for this I would need to turn the house around. I wondered if I could knock a hole in the downhill wall and just let it out that way….. / but NO… / it had to be mopped and swished and cleaned up, every damn last drop. On one frantic rush through the house to get more towels and mops, I spied the RB screen waiting on my computer and just thought… / “damn!” Meantime, going into all those dark places under cupboards and behind things, it washed out numerous little inhabitants, the eightlegged kind, so I had a bit of a flood of red back spiders emerging too….. so….that just made it all the more fun. / Living dangerously …. Two hours later, aching back, wet feet, wet everydamnthing…. I drag out the carpets and furniture onto the back lawn, to see the bloody steer’s buddies in my back yard now, eating and shiiitting under my clothesline…. / Where’s the dog when you need her? / (oh of course, running under the house with the wet shoes I put outside to dry, isn’t she!) Then to the front verandah which now has broken boards and the scene of destruction where the clever beastie jumped off the verandah and took all the ceramic pots with him…..smasho! / How can one gentle animal create such a mess ….. (but I shan’t complain because this kind animal saved his bowel movement till he ran off down the track…..phew! mighty thoughtful…..) So…I tell you, next time you sit and indulge at Redbubble, bear in mind that life still goes on around you, and it can catch you up and overtake you in a big bad way if you are not watching…...it can even smash up the front of your house, crap at the back of it and flood everything in between…. but hey, / I came back to Redbubble didn’t I !!!

  • Let me sleep damnit!!!

Warning… This little tale is written in the language I speak, frequent use of course language may offend some viewers Back in the days when Sunday morning lie ins were a right and not a priviledge (of course I am talking of BC… Before Children) I would thoroughly enjoy sleeping the morning away and surfacing mostly in time for lunch. For those of you that know me you will know that I value my sleep and do not take kindly to being woken before I am ready. Ok, BC I used to be a bloody sleep nazi ok? THERE! I admit it!! However there came a period in time when every single Sunday I was rudely awoken in the predawn hours – for that read anything before lunchtime – by various groups of religious zealots trying to tell me that if I didnt convert to their faith I would burn in the everlasting fiery pits of Hell – not really such a great threat, I’m sure with slothfulness being a sin should I make it to hell I WOULD AT LEAST GET A FUCKING SLEEP IN on a Sunday! Now… I don’t believe in religion but thats NOT to say I dont believe in God, and I dont necessarily have anything against anyone who does. I draw the line however when they come knocking at my door, with their children in tow (children who SHOULD still be in their pj’s watching Sunday morning cartoons) asking me if I have been bathed in the blood of Christ?! AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!! Its SUNDAY MORNING!!! You have woken me up, I havent even brushed my teeth or taken a shower and you want me to go skinny dipping in a pool of someone elses unsanitary blood? SHEESH!!! I mean for fucks sake! Even GOD had a day off when He was creating the world. And I quote ”...and on the seventh day he rested” Don’t know about you, but on my calendar the seventh day is… you guessed it …SUNDAY!!!! So… this went on for a while. I am sure there were several families in the area who drew up a roster just to make sure I wouldnt get my sleep in. Perhaps they thought they could wear me down with sleep deprivation – I dont know. My replies to them as I opened the door went from good … “I’m sorry, I have my own faith” and degenerated into really bad… “Oh for the love of all thats unholy… ITS SUNDAY! I AM SLEEPING!!” (sound of door slamming and potty mouth curses as I stumble back into bed) And still…. they came…. They even went so far as to plant a spy amongst our midst. While talking one Sunday afternoon out the front to our neighbour, who up until this time had seemed like a perfectly normal, well adjusted guy, hubby happened to mention his annoyance of our Sunday morning visitors…. Bad move… HE WAS ONE OF THEM!!! A SHEEP IN WOLVES CLOTHING!!! (and no that is NOT a typo…. think about it..lol) Ok… enough was enough… I was sleep deprived, and more than just a little pissed off. So the next Sunday morning I lay in wait for my pre- dawn visitors. Only THIS time, I had company. At the time I had the honour of sharing my life with a beautiful girl by the name of Bundy. She was a Rottweiler x Staffy and a more lovely girl you never did meet. She had unfortunately inherited my proclivity for sleeping in though. Up until now she had been quite content to stay snuggled with hubby in bed while I went to deal with out nuisance knockers. But now she was ready to leap to our defence as it was. So this particular Sunday morning, Bundy and I lay in wait. The knock came… I grabbed her two inch thick leather studded collar, whispered “sick ‘em” and opened the door… Imagine, if you will, being confronted by a vision from Hades clad in Tweety Bird pyjamas, tired red eyes blazing, Medusa hair flying and her very own Hound from Hell, risen onto her back paws so that she was nearly as tall as her mistress, snarling…growling …spitting flecks of foam onto the flyscreen… To this day I am AMAZED that they didnt take me up on my invitation to “come on inside for a cuppa, and pray… tell me the words of our Lord…”

  • Lets make it rain with Photoshop

Perhaps you want to composite some images together to make a scarey, stormy image. Or maybe you have an image that has storm clouds, is dark and overcast and would benefit with some rain added to it – or maybe some snow for that winters scene. Start and Finish Images Using a couple of filters and a blend mode in PS you can create away to your hearts content. The image I’ve used in the tutorial is 800×600 @ 72 dpi You will have to adjust some of the settings that I am going to use to compensate for a larger image and dpi, but I know you like to play in Photoshop :-) Firstly, open your chosen image, duplicate it and close the original. If you just want an image to practice on, you will find the start file HERE I’m using PS3, so my next step was to use a B&W adjustment layer to convert this particular image to B&W, I then used a Curves adjustment layer and then a Levels adjustment layer. You don’t have to convert to B&W, I just chose to do so because the original image sucks :-) How you want your image to be is fine, it is not going to affect what we are going to do next. So, whatever it is that you have done make sure that the top most layer is selected then I want you to create a new layer above. You can click on the new layer icon in the layers palette, or you can press shift+ctrl+n to bring up the new layer dialogue box and name the new layer. Now I want you to fill the new layer with black. If your f/ground and b/ground colour are set to the default you can press alt+backspace on your keyboard for window users and I’m not sure for mac users LOL probably option backspace. Now is starts to get fun. Making sure that you new black layer is active, I want you to go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise – below are the settings that I have used on this image, so punch in the same settings if you like. Go straight to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and you can apply the settings that I have by punching in the same figures as the image below. If you want the rain to go straight down, or from a different angle altogether, just rotate the little angle wheel around till you get want you want. Next I want you to go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. In the image below you can see what the starting point will be for this particular image. I have made no adjustments as of yet. By bringing in the black slider toward the middle of the bar we start to creat the rain. The rain will be the white lines that you see in the image. You can see in the image below that I have taken the black slider in toward the middle and I have also moved the white slider in toward the middle slightly. How much you move each slider is entirely up to you. It will depend on how much rain you want in the image etc., So that’s the part where you get to play around because each image will require slightly modified settings. Right, so thats a mess LOL But, here comes the great part. Go to the Blending Mode option at the top of the layers palette and I want you to change it to Screen ….. look at that ….. magic! :-) Screen mode knocks out any black pixels and the multiply blend mode is the exact opposite to Screen if you want to knock out white pixels. All that is left to do now is change the opacity slider if you want. I’ve changed the opacity to 50% in the image below. And here is our completed image. View large file HERE

  • Let's Focus On.....Paul Compton(Artist Interview)
    by Mui-Ling Teh

Next up in the sequence of interviews, allow me to introduce Paul Compton! You can find out how this has all started and who has been interviewed by visiting this forum (I just discovered this). It would have been nice if I could’ve interviewed Paul face to face at his dinner party. Just imagine sitting there with with Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, Woody Allen, Leigh Bowery, Yoko Ono, Joan Rivers, Odilon Redon, Jarvis Cocker, Jim Henson, Andy Kaufman, Friedrich Nietzsche, Dolly Parton, Charles Dickens, Harry Houdini, Divine and Edward Gorey… but since I’m not in Melbourne, Australia, I don’t have that option. If I were, I could’ve also seen his solo exhibition! ___ / Dear Mui-Ling, here goes…….. How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? I spend a lot of time daydreaming which causes me to lose concentration and enthusiasm for all other aspects of my life. Most of the time I feel like I can’t function properly in the real world so although I may seem to be walking around enjoying my everyday life in my mind I am some place else. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful / The most special thing about my time on RedBubble was meeting and experiencing the works of the following people: invisible , Butchart, John Douglas and pinkyjain among many others. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you. / Choosing just just 5 favourite works is impossible! I recommend taking a look at my favorites on my profile page to see more RB treasures. / 1. Dead Friends 1 by John Douglas. This works is incredibly sad and poignant and demonstrates John Douglas’ superb heartfelt and captivating style. The story attached to this image outlined in the description broke my heart. It is a work that I consider unforgettable. / / The prisoner gives in and says he’ll wait til the morning to leave by pinkyjain Pinkyjain is a unique person with a unique imagination. Her tenderness, sense of humour and creativity shine through in every work she does. Her Vampire series is epic and wonderous to say the least. This particular work shows the naiive hero of the story covering his eyes. Such an emotive and lovely drawing I can’t help but adore it. / / Idols of Worship that in Times of Desperation I have Attempted to Invoke by ellejayerose A very funny, lyrical and quirky t-shirt design. It cleverly reflects on our society’s want to look for answers and strength from pop, consumer and religious culture. Many a time I have tried to invoke ellejayerose in a time of desperation. / Sailing Along the Lifeline by Mui-Ling Teh Sheer magic is the best way to describe this. Mui-Ling is an incredibly patient and talented artist. In this photo a palm becomes a vast sea for a delicate paper boat. This piece has turned the ordinary into the extraordinary and is a true marvel. / Girl in a Fishbowl, a written piece by Yasemin Sumner This is just one example of the wonderful writing of Yasemin Sumner. Her narratives are always powerful but also delicate and vividly descriptive. They are always poignant and always surprising. Was that ok Mui-Ling? I hope it turns out well and the links work. Just tell me if you need more or less information. / Thank again ever so much again!!!!!!!! from Paul / ___ It was brilliant Paul! And I admire your thoughtful comments on each work and artist. So often we as artists create something out of our instincts, and we deep down know what we are trying to achieve but can’t bring it out through words (at least that often goes for me). Paul your words help us uncover what we have buried in our minds; you are more brilliant than the Wizard of Oz! Or is the Wizard of Oz considered brilliant? He said “I am a good man, but a bad wizard” ... Well that completes my two interviews… There are many great artists on RB I love, and I I feel sorry that I could not feature all of you; it has taken me a while to decide who to interview next; but you are all truly wonderful people whom I am thankful to have met. Some of you I just met or am getting to know better now; and I hope to continue getting to know you. Hope everyone enjoyed reading these and have a ‘WICKED’ day!

  • *Kafka's Interview* Let's Focus on Kafka!!!

There is a brand new initiative coming from the great creative brain of Red Bubble’s Jo O’Brien who has begun a chain of interviews, dedicated to spreading the love and creativity. / She asked MuscularTeeth to start a chain. / He interviewed Karin Taylor and Butchart . / Karin interviewed Frozenfa and Mui-Ling Teh !! / Then Frozenfa interviewed BarbBarcikKeith and me!!!!!!!! What an honour!! / Also Mui-Ling Teh interviewed Jo Holden and Paul Compton! / I interviewed hahpistuff Now I interview wonderful kafka!! kafka Talks Creativity How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? That is quite a difficult question for me to answer as I am a full-time artist who spends most of my time in some way connected to my work. It would be easier for me to describe how other aspects of my life affect my creativity! I spend nearly all of my time thinking about the next painting, sculpture, drawing, design or photograph that I have lined up – often more than one at the same time! This means that nearly everything else in my life becomes the subject of some sort of creative project or other (even if it/they/she doesn’t particularly want to !) It also means that ordinary, everyday stuff gets done without me paying all that much attention – for example; the other day I offered to help out my girlfriend by cutting the grass in her garden. I was happily mowing away, up and down the garden all the while thinking about a new commissioned piece that I have just got in, I was just deciding whether to use Le Corbusier’s modulor as a basis for the compositional format when there was a strange noise from the mower – I looked down from my ivory tower and discovered that I and my still whirring lawnmower were in the middle of a bed of beautiful irises that were just about in flower……..(OH shiiiiiiiit……….’well it looked just like long grass…..darling…?’) Another thing that I have just started is flying light aircraft – you would think that that was safe from artistic intervention – but no…..no sooner am I up there than, instead of just enjoying the buzz, I have to start thinking about and planning paintings and projects all to do with flying – What I suppose I mean is – life, all of it, gets turned into art in some way or another……….! Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful There are so many wonderful people here and I have been very lucky to have made friends with many of them in the nine months since I joined the community it is really impossible to pick just one person. Marilyn Brown (my fellow co-host at the Painters in Modern Times group) has been an absolute inspiration in the way that she puts so much time and work into the group, always ready to help and is just a totally lovely person. Susan Grissom is a good friend and an exceptional painter of talent and vision. Mariska, Sophie, Sam, Marie, Rosh, Entity, Carmen……the list just goes on. I have had wonderful inspirational arguments and discussions with Mufa (now sadly gone) Martin, Carson, Revad et al in the forums of PiMT and elsewhere. Everything about this great art community can surprise and inspire you – CC Arsharga wrote a beautiful poem inspired by one of my paintings (what a great moment!) – my friend Midori asks to interview me (how great is that?!) I love this place! There is one special person here who has been a great friend and has shown nothing but kindness and love (as she does to all) since we first met. Her avatar is Micmac but I call her Gigi. She is not a painter like me, she is a photographer, but she always understands what I am trying to do, and she always ‘gets’ my work (sometimes before I do !!) She just knows the sound of my footsteps and I love her for it. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you The Death of the Little Prince by Micmac / / Gigi made this beautiful image for me………it just says it all really. My piano has been drinking by Midori Furze / / Tom Waits rules!!! OK Untitled by Susan Grissom / / Susan is a fabulous painter, her work is quiet yet very deep. I return to her portfolio many times just to remind myself of what real painting can do. Deluge by Mcdowell Finlyson / / Mcdowell is an astonishing painter with an incredible vision – painting that really takes you there. Rhythm of Time by Samuel Durkin / / Sam is very much a hard-working and dedicated painter’s painter. He never fails to produce absolutely top quality work and, like me, understands how difficult it is to make your way in the world as an artist. He has lived the life and somehow managed to get through it. There are so many others that I could mention, forgive me my friends if your name or your work is not here, it doesn’t mean I am not thinking of you. / Kafka…………x .................................................................. / Thank you Nigel!! / Keep an eye on kafka’s journal! / He’ll be posting two more interviews like this sooooooooooooon. / I wonder who he’ll interview!!! / Midori

This is the story of our Grandmothers, and Great-grandmothers, as they lived only 90 years ago. It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women who made it so were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the that night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs, and their warden’s blessing, went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of ‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’ They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women. Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food – all of it colorless slop – was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because – why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining? Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO ’s new movie Iron Jawed Angels. It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder. All these years later, voter registration is still my passion, a carryover from the Civil Rights Movement, I suppose, because most of the voters who are targeted for my campaigns are black. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. / Sometimes it was inconvenient. My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was – with herself. One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie, she said. What would those women think of the way I use – or don’t use – my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who / did seek to learn. The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her all over again. HBO released the movie on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity. Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote Democratic, Republican or independent party – remember to vote. History is being made.

I know what you guys are thinking but yes I got her more than just the ring for christmas. Unfortunately I heard that you cant get away with passing that as a present. Jodie is one of my harshest (not sure if that is a word) critiques of my work and I love her for that. Making clocks using your own artwork is great fun, I’ve been doing it for years. I’ll show you how to make a clock out of foam board (foam core) and a clock motor. / You’ll need to decide on the size of your clock and the thickness of the material first, so you can choose the length of the motor stem, and the length of the clock hands (free when you buy a motor). This is the motor I usually use. (http://www.klockit.com/products/dept-157__sku-FFFFV.html) This clock is 7” diameter, can be larger. / You’ll need to add the clock numbers or symbols to your artwork; you can do this freehand, or use the illustration as a guide to make a template, as a temporary layer to your art, position your numbers, then delete the template. Don’t forget to include a 5/16 inch center circle on your art so you can cut out the hole for the clock stem. / / / Once you’ve glued your print to foam core and cut it out, you need to make the hole for the clock stem. IMPORTANT TIP: put your work on a cutting surface, hold your xacto knife straight up and push the tip straight down into the edge of the small center circle, repeat making a dotted line of down-cuts around the edge. Turn your work over, and you should see the circle where the tip came through, repeat the straight down cuts again around the circle until you can pop out the center with the back end of your knife. / Attach motor and hanger using the diagram. You may need small pliers to tighten the clock stem nut, but gently. Make sure the hands are pointing straight up when attaching them, use the minute hand to line up that shaft before carefully pressing on the hour hand, attach minute hand with it’s tiny nut, gently. If you bought a second hand, carefully press it onto the smallest center shaft. Add the AA battery, set the time, and hang it up! / / / CONTINUED IN LET’S MAKE A CLOCK – PART 2

Here are some clocks I’ve made over the years. Notice that you can glue things to the hands, but nothing heavy! Limit your material to file card stock, and super glue is fine. I’d love to know if anyone gets inspired enough to make something! / / / / /

  • Yes, this is the squirrel we have been following lately. He rises from the bushes and flirts with the birds, as he, with lightening speed, slips the seeds into his cheeks. We followed that bugger, watching him investigate the deck with enthusiasm, and then ducking away as we approach. New feeders went up and he got fond of one in particular we decided to suspend after noticing him hanging on one hole with one hand swing to and fray munching with the other hand and feet wrapped around the pole holding the feeder up…. He came out, completely confused, and headed straight up the railings to see what the tarnation we were up to. There, in plain sight, was his favorite thing! He saw the pole and climbed up… except this time the feeder was suspended – okay, so what.. circled his little self down the wires to the feeder…. Which started rocking and rocking with his every movement. It was like watching those drunk tourists on the mechanical bull!!! When the breeze kicked up it was even worse. The plastic was slippery and there wasn’t much for him to hold onto so he just fell below to try again… and again … and then got used to it. Too used to it I say!!! It swayed but he held this time and almost laughing started exploring the top. He trickled his little hands down and felt the holes! Stretching… stretching and …. my goodness was he made like a gumby!!!! ...... maaan those little critters are amazing! Well, after he got really looooong and almost got a hand in the hole and succeeded he got excited and in started his nose! .... He fell again… mad as #$#!! too! Stomped, chattered, chittered, vibrated…did what mad squirrels do and went for revenge!!!!! Up he charged the pole and slammed onto the feeder thingie like a pro! Frantically he wiggled this and waddled that and pulled and punched and tugged like there was no tomorrow and then suddenly out came the bionic jaws! Up went the lid and presto! He had full, dive-into-able access to the seeds, fruit, nuts etc… everything! Like Christmas in May oh happy day!!! Sigh…........... Another sigh…........... Can ya tell I’m sighing???.................................. sigh…................. Okay the squirrel WON.. ........UNTIL we got out the Duct tape and the siskins came back with their boots on! ... AND we employed him to be in charge of all seeds on deck!!! HUGS, XOXOXO! / maxy…

This promotion is a great opportunity to market your designs. All t-shirts on RedBubble are 15% off, and any order with 5 or more shirts ships free. That’s a good deal, but you can make it even better for shoppers. Here’s an example of the discount you can boast when you lower your margins temporarily for this promotion. For example, by lowering a mark-up from 30% to 15%, you can market your tees for 25% off. That sounds great to any shopper. Here are a few ways to get the word out about this promotion: 1. Announce the sale in a journal article and suggest a few best-selling (or new) designs to shoppers. 2. Use your blog, social networking hangout, or other webpage to promote your sale. You can use the graphics that we provide below, or create your own. If you create a graphic (or template) and want to share it with other RedBubble members, simply link to it in the comments area below. 3. Create a unique sales event about: New work. “See my newest t-shirt designs and get 25% off. Tees start at around $20!” Seasonal sale. “It’s winter, so stock up on long sleeve tees featuring my new designs.” “It’s summer in the US – perfect short sleeve weather…” Limited Editions. Offer a design for the week of this sale only. Then put it in storage for 6 months. Limited Editions and sales promotions work well together. Use email to spread the message. If you have a large contact list or are concerned about spam filters, services such as Campaign Monitor allow you to send emails for 1 cent per email. Plus, services like this one offer free email templates that do not require a knowledge of programming languages such as HTML. One member remarked in the article about email marketing, “I have been doing this for years and I can vouch for the fact that it works.” Read more about how to promote your work using email. If you send an email, remember to: only use a list of people that agreed to receive your emails; note the promotion deadline; check your links; and send only 1-2 emails about the promotion – one at the beginning of the promotion and one 24- or 36-hours before the promotion ends. More email tips are here. Happy selling! The RedBubble Team p.s. If you have an interest in learning more sales techniques, check out the Sales Group and our free Selling tips and tricks. • "Don't Let Your Dreams Die"

A man lay on his bed at the end of his life waiting to die… His dream came to pay his last respects and bid farewell to the man who had never used it. As it entered the room the man looked down in shame. “Why did you not realise me ?” the dream asked. “Because I was afraid,” the man said. “Afraid of what,” said the dream. “I was afraid I would fail.” “But haven’t you failed by not attempting to use me?”. “Yes I did, but I always thought there would be tomorrow.” “You Fool!” said the dream” Did it never occur to you that there was only ever today? the moment that you are in right now? Do you think that now that death is here that you can put it off until tomorrow?”. “No”. said the man, a tear gently rolling down his cheek. The dream was softer now, because it knew that there were two types of pain, the pain of discipline and the pain of regret, and while discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs pounds. Then the dream leant forward to gently wipe away the tear and said, “You need only have taken the first step and I would have taken one to meet you, for the only thing that ever separated us was the belief in your mind that you couldn’t have me”. Then they said goodbye and they both died… —-found on the Internet by an unknown author.

  • Let's talk about depression and do something about it

G’day folks. Years ago, I would never have envisaged writing about depression from first-hand experience. Well, I am and I hope by doing so it may prompt others to action. Last year it was suggested to me by a couple of family members that I see my General Practitioner. It’s good that those close to me could see a change in my health and make that suggestion. Being a bloke who thinks that everything will sort itself out, in this instance it hasn’t. Recently, I made a move and made an appointment with my GP. My situation is still being assessed, however I’m very much looking forward to a healthier me. I’ve had eight sessions with a psychologist to date and things are going okay. Thankfully, I still have enough marbles floating around inside my cranium to realise that there’s got to be some changes enacted by me to become healthier. Anyway, enough of me. I’m happy to talk about depression with anyone here, whether it be publicly on this journal or privately via bubblemail. My motivation is to raise awareness and provide information to those who feel they may need advice. A few things I’d like to mention which may assist: Australia’s national depression initiative, beyondblue, is an organisation which provides information about depression to consumers, carers and health professionals. A beaut port of call for those thinking of taking that first step for assistance. / www.beyondblue.org.au There’s an excellent book authored by Dr Sarah Edelman titled: Change your thinking which deals with positive and practical ways to overcome stress, negative emotions and self defeating behaviour. Available for purchase online at Borders. Highly recommended. / www.borders.com.au It’s Movember. This is where we can all raise awareness about men’s health issues, encourage one another, and help those organisations which can do with support. I’m taking part in the Movember initiative this year, and for the first time in my life I’ll be growing a moustache. As someone who knows first-hand what depression is like, I feel that using my clean shaven face and knowledge can help and inspire others. If you’d like to support me during Movember, click on my Movember link or graphic to donate or leave a comment. Thanks for reading folks. And fellas, go for it. Good luck. For those that like stories and updates, / for you that have said “I like to read what is going on / for you” this is for you I would like to share some joy and maybe add a sneaky / request perhaps if it appears naturally to ask…. let’s see My life currently is turning into / boxes and MORE boxes, each one gets labelled / some are fragile and some easy to lift if you bend at the knees / and say ahhhhhh as you come up. Everyday is do a little clearing / a little letting go a little walk down memory lane as I uncover things / that tell me stories of my past of how far I have come. There is 30 years of me from then and now in this house / every room has mama stories and lots of my secret ones / I can see all the rooms I hid from her to protect her / where I hid because I thought if I showed then there would be no room / for me ….there were doors too, ones that over time were opened to reveal / the mutual ok-ness of us, of being, of our unusual alliance. Now the rugs have been sold on ebay and I can hear the sound of my walking / I can hear the sound of the emptiness as it becomes empty and I am sure / I can hear the days ahead. I am sure I can hear myself way ahead laughing / somewhere. The garden is over run with more weeds than have ever been seen in it’s ordinary / history, there are more weeds with flowers and so there are more bees, more / butterflies, more messages from the dragonflies. I cannot see the / plants we planted together with my daughter inside with my mother / watching from the kitchen window. / I can see them winking through the long tall grass at me promising me / olives and limes / figs and nectarines in other worlds to come. And there are the roses, the beautiful roses that gave us both so much / joy every year / outdoing their brilliance with their velvet red song. I know that / digging up their roots will / not bring her back. I think I can leave without them. I think I will. I am grateful to this time to this place to my moving step by step / into more of who I am. / I ask every morning “Please a little help some easy help in lettin go” / and everyday some book some furniture some crockery something leaves / and finds itself needed and wanted / by someone somewhere else, and the glow of this flowing to and from is / my healing. / It moves and connects and gives sanctuary. So I now hear the asking, / if you feel / it too then come and keep me close company in this flow of little by / little letting go. / I know there is so much more to come. I am sure I can hear myself way ahead laughing / somewhere.

OK all you wonderful people out there in RB land – I have a task for those of you who feel like doing it:) There is a massive healing conjunction happening at the moment and for those of you who need this time to push forward, through your doubts and fears and your insecurities and pain, then this is the time to do so. Suspend judgement, let go and simply work with the energies of the Universe… Take a blank sheet of paper and divide it into three columns… or take three sheets of paper if you want the room… In the first column write: GOODBYE LIST – And list ALL the things which affected you in 2009 which you want to leave behind GRATITUDE LIST – List ALL that you are grateful for in 2009 INTENTIONS LIST – List ALL that you are going to work towards achieving in 2010 Then you can read them all out on December 31:) Happy Solstice! Happy New Year! / May 2010 bring you joy, prosperity, serenity and lots of laughter:) / Blessed Be / Marg
