This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. If you are a Catholic you will go up to the priest after Mass and he will make a cross on your forehead and say “Remember it is from ashes you come and it is to ashes you will returnâ. And then begins 40 days of fasting in some form (maybe). It is so un-now this – this reminder of mortality and this voluntary abstaining from pleasure (although I suspect the modern Catholic is unlikely to give up much). It is so obviously a bit old-fashioned. We are here to live life as hard and fast as humanely possible. Take medicines to fix us up if we get ill. And check-out when all is said and done as quietly and with as little fuss as possible. Or maybe not. Maybe the journey is about gaining a little wisdom along the way. And perhaps the only way to do so is by a little restraint and consideration of the context in which our lives are lived.
One of the largest crosses in the world with a little PS added.

the ironic quirks of history are written in stone – here near Wick in the north of Scotland, the mighty stone towers that sheltered the Picts from their most hated enemy the Romans, have in more recent times been quarried to build Roman religious shrines, this one is dedicated to the festival of lent.
There is something magical about walking through a thin layer of snow alongside a riverbank. Especially when no one has been there yet. You’ll find all sorts of strange figures, made by the wind and the water.
I’ve coupled an American robin with a European legend about the robin; I think it makes for a nice marriage. And a very good message for Lent and Easter, too! Bearing His cross, while Christ passed forth forlorn, / His God-like forehead by the mock crown torn, / A little bird took from that crown one thorn / To soothe the dear Redeemer’s throbbing head. / That bird did what she could; His blood, ‘tis said, / Down dropping, dyed her tender bosom red; / Since then no wanton boy disturbs her nest; / Weasel nor wild cat will her young molest; / All sacred deem the bird of ruddy breast.
One of my very first pieces…. I imagine one of the apostles seeing Jesus dying upon the cross—but in reality, I like to think it could be any of us. Peace, Claudia I made this image for a convent of Carmelite sisters that I love dearly… / I’m hoping they can use this in their gift shop.
I know this is another dark piece – but I’ve been working a little every day on this one during a very difficult time in my life…. / Added some texture to the final painting…..and had to step away from it a lot because it became hard for me to see after a while. Anyway – hope you like it. I had originally started to do a native american painting – - and for some reason – this is what I ended up with.

This fractal reminded on the Cross. I hope the allusion is clear. / Created in Apophysis, postprocessed in PhotoImpact. The Tree of Love The tree of love its roots hath spread / Deep in my heart, and rears its head; / Rich are its fruits: they joy dispense; / Transport the heart, and ravish sense. / In love’s sweet swoon to thee I cleave, / Bless’d source of love . . . , St. Francis of Asissi 1182-1226
Auf die Mode von Frankfurt / Shop window in Frankfurt’s fashion district. The mannequins’ fake facial features are in celebration of “fasching”, the local pre-Lenten festival. Otherwise, it’s merely passive voyeurism… / / /
