  • TODAY, FEB 14, 2009, I WENT SHOOTING AT YOLO SPORTSMANS ASSOCIATION IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, NEAR DAVIS. AS THE DAY PROGRESSED, THE CLOUDS CAME AND WENT WITH DIFFERENT DEGREES OF RAIN THREAT. WELL, THE WIND CAME UP AND MADE IT PRETTY COLD, SO EVERYBODY THAT WAS THERE, AND THERE WASN’T VERY MANY PEOPLE SHOOTING TODAY, WERE ALL WRAPPED UP IN LAYERS IN ORDER TO STAY WARM. AS I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE, THE RAIN STARTED COMING DOWN. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO RAIN AROUND 1:00 PM, BUT IT DIDN’T REALLY START UNTIL ABOUT 2:30. BUT, THEN IT CAME QUICK AND HARD. SO, AS I DROVE OUT OF THE GUN CLUB PROPERTY AND DROVE DOWN ROAD 29A, I NOTICED THIS RAINBOW DEVELOPING FARTHER NORTH OF ME. I STOPPED MY FORD AND GOT OUT MY CAMERA AND TOOK SOME PHOTOS OF THAT RAINBOW. I DROVE ABOUT FOUR MORE MILES DOWN THAT SAME ROAD UNTIL I NOTICED THE RAINBOW HAD TURNED INTO A “FULL LENGTH RAINBOW”, SO I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND GOT OUT MY CAMERA. THIS TIME I GOT OUT OF MY FORD AND WALKED ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I GOT SOME SHOTS WITH THE RAINBOW AND HIGH POWER PYLONS AND SOME SHOTS WITH MY TRUCK UNDER THE RAINBOW, BUT THIS SHOT WITHOUT ANY WIRES OR MY TRUCK LOOKED JUST RIGHT. I USED MY CANON EOS DIGITAL REBEL 300D WITH MY 18-55 ULTRASONIC AF MACRO LENS SET AT 18MM IN ORDER TO GET THIS FULL RAINBOW. WITH THE HELP OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 3.0, I DID A LITTLE ENHANCING AND DARKENING SO THAT THE RAINBOW WOULD SHOW UP JUST A LITTLE BETTER. ONE COLOR SATURATION AND ONE SHARPEN, WITH ONE SHARPEN EDGES AND THE SHOT WAS DONE.

  • On Good-Friday 2009, my wife, myself and two nieces visited the Adelaide Zoo . We photographed many of the animals, but these photographs are my favourite for the day. There is an interesting twist to this photograph that enabled me the opportunity to take the shot: Many Adelaide zoo-visotors would know this vantage point where you can photograph the tree-monkeys. / A young korean guy was standing here with his wife and youngster, him throwing bits of his fruitbar to the monkey, trying to entice it to the top of the branch. I was around the other side of the tree at the higher vantage point, so thought it was a zoo-keeper feeding the primates. When I quickly rushed down the boardwalk to this location, I was shocked to catch the young man throwing the last piece. I succinctly told him to discontinue throwing food. / Him: “It’s OK, all gone!” / Me: “Good.” / Then he pretended to throw food, with part of the plastic wrapper sticking out of his fist. / Me: “Hey! Just stop it. Please stop doing that. Don’t tease the monkey!” / Him: “It’s OK, I have nothing.” He was very obviously an international tourist. / Me: “Just don’t do it. OK?” / Him: “OK, sorry.” (With a slightly dumbfounded look on his face). His partner was slightly embarrassed. / He stopped, but he stayed right he was, thinking I was going to go away. Then he turned back to the monkey … and pretended to throw food again! / This time another guy in the crowd pushed through and pointed the guy to the sign (that I couldn’t see from where I was standing) that very plainly says: / “DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS”. This time he decided to move along. Thankfully for me the monkey stayed where he was sitting on the end of the branch … and I was a little bit closer! / So I took the opportunity to shoot a dozen photographs of the amazing off-yellow fur, those beautiful eyes and black-leather hands.
